Book excerpt: Father is training her to become a woman banker -- maybe Missouri's first. Women these days are treated in particular ways, cast in limited roles. But she read in the newspaper that in larger cities they are being hired in medicine, businesses, and universities. She wants to be one of them. Born in 1870, Adelaide W. Morgan never expected she’d do great things like Florence Nightingale. But neither does she want only housewifery. When Stifel Bank hires her as the first woman teller-clerk-secretary in Independence, she's content. But then a scandal and an untoward relationship upends her life and reputation. Scorned, she seeks wisdom from her family, friends, and God. It is 1891, and opportunities for women are still very limited. But in Arizona Territory, where Apache raids are now under control, there is hope. The new University of Arizona is opening its doors to women students. But is Tucson and her new calling to the West enough to escape her past and bring forth a promising future? Set during a turning point in American history, Western Rose puts you squarely in the middle of nineteenth-century life replete with societal conventions and inventions. On her own, Addie faces injustice, death, and grief. Will she overcome? And can she find love so far from home? A story of courage, faith, and hope, Western Rose is a page turner from beginning to end.

Book excerpt: A riveting story of World War II and the courage of one young woman as she is drafted into Churchill’s overseas spy network, aiding the French Resistance behind enemy lines and working to liberate Nazi-occupied Paris… London, 1941: In a cramped bunker in Winston Churchill’s Cabinet War Rooms, underneath Westminster’s Treasury building, civilian women huddle at desks, typing up confidential documents and reports. Since her parents were killed in a bombing raid, Rose Teasdale has spent more hours than usual in Room 60, working double shifts, growing accustomed to the burnt scent of the Prime Minister’s cigars permeating the stale air. Winning the war is the only thing that matters, and she will gladly do her part. And when Rose’s fluency in French comes to the attention of Churchill himself, it brings a rare yet dangerous opportunity. Rose is recruited for the Special Operations Executive, a secret British organization that conducts espionage in Nazi-occupied Europe. After weeks of grueling training, Rose parachutes into France with a new codename: Dragonfly. Posing as a cosmetics saleswoman in Paris, she ferries messages to and from the Resistance, knowing that the slightest misstep means capture or death. Soon Rose is assigned to a new mission with Lazare Aron, a French Resistance fighter who has watched his beloved Paris become a shell of itself, with desolate streets and buildings draped in Swastikas. Since his parents were sent to a German work camp, Lazare has dedicated himself to the cause with the same fervor as Rose. Yet Rose’s very loyalty brings risks as she undertakes a high-stakes prison raid, and discovers how much she may have to sacrifice to justify Churchill’s faith in her . . . Book A Reason to Live

  • Author : Vicki Hutton
  • Publisher : Purdue University Press
  • Release : 2019-06-14
  • ISBN : 1612495826
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book A Reason to Live written by Vicki Hutton and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-14 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Reason to Live explores the human-animal relationship through the narratives of eleven people living with HIV and their animal companions. The narratives, based on a series of interviews with HIV-positive individuals and their animal companions in Australia, span the entirety of the HIV epidemic, from public awareness and discrimination in the 1980s and 1990s to survival and hope in the twenty-first century. Each narrative is explored within the context of theory (for example, attachment theory, the "biophilia hypothesis," neurochemical and neurophysiological effects, laughter, play, death anxiety, and stigma) in order to understand the unique bond between human and animal during an "epidemic of stigma." A consistent theme is that these animals provided their human companions with "a reason to live" throughout the epidemic. Long-term survivors describe past animal companions who intuitively understood their needs and offered unconditional love and support during this turbulent period. More recently diagnosed HIV-positive narrators describe animal companions within the context of hope and the wellness narrative of living and aging with HIV in the twenty-first century. Bringing together these narratives offers insight into one aspect of the multifaceted HIV epidemic when human turned against human, and helps explain why it was frequently left to the animals to support their human companions. Importantly, it recognizes the enduring bond between human and animal within the context of theory and narrative, thus creating a cultural memory in a way that has never been done before.
