Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we embarked on this project to write a book about Manville, we were met with an enthusiastic response. Our appeal to the people of this town for photos, stories and relics of this community’s past was met with an outpouring of material. Residents were generous with the photos of their family and friends engaged in clubs and activities, working at businesses and at their homes. They brought us wonderful stories about the history of the town and its evolution. We sincerely thank them for their contributions. This book is for you and we hope that you will find your stories and memories well represented. The original motivation to embark on the project was John Shutack, who unfortunately is not here to see its completion. We have many others to thanks for their contributions including Ruth Bielanski for all of her assistance, George Jakelsky for his extensive knowledge of the people, places, clubs and activities of Manville and Rudy Nowak for recommending, Kathryn Quick, who compiled the history for the book. We sincerely thank Kathryn Quick, a town resident and author, who graciously contributed so much time and energy to this project. This is an on-going project with new history being written each day. We look forward to the next volume and encourage all of our community to save their memories and photos to share with the people of Manville in the future.—A. Sandy Filipinni

Download or read book Northeast Minneapolis written by Richard Wolniewicz and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated six hypotheses concerning the development of an ethnic community and intra-urban migration in Minneapolis from 1905 to 1945; (1) Although a Polish ethnic core area could be identified, provincial clustering was not sharply defined within that group. (2) The 'port of entry' function grew with the community and was not bound to the area of transient housing; (3) The length of first generation move was more closely related to the expansion of Minneapolis and its economy than to the length of time since arrival; (4) It cannot categorically be stated that second generation individuals are more mobile than first generation members. Important considerations are the definition of mobility used and the age structure of each generation; and (5) More Polish moves were explained by within-group information flows than by Adams' wedge-shaped mental map notion. Stability, not mobility, was the keynote of Polish residential choice.
Download or read book The Quest for the Rusyn Soul written by Keith P. Dyrud and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conversion to Orthodoxy meant adopting the Russian cultural identity. Subcarpathian Rusyn conversions to Orthodoxy triggered a reaction from the Hungarian government - which viewed Russian Orthodoxy as a dimension of Russian imperialism and a threat to the Magyarization of the Rusyns. The Austro-Hungarian government petitioned the Pope to establish the Greek Catholic Rite in North America. As Europe was being divided into two belligerent camps prior to World War I, the Russian and the Austro-Hungarian empires were engaged in covert attempts to win the allegiance of the people living in the contested area. This imperial competition followed the subject peoples to the United States where the competition was complicated by the opposing interests of the Latin bishops who had no interest in European conflicts but a great interest in establishing a uniform American Latin Catholicism.
