Book The Little Golden Calf

Download or read book The Little Golden Calf written by Ilʹi︠a︡ Ilʹf and published by New York : F. Ungar. This book was released on 1961 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The satirical novel's main character, Ostap Bender, also appeared in a previous novel by the authors called The Twelve Chairs. The title alludes to the "golden calf" of the Bible; another possible rendering of it in English, less literal but better tuned to the air of the novel, would be "The Gilded Calf". It continues the theme of the denunciation of money-grubbing, philistine stupidity, and bureaucracy, which began in “The Twelve Chairs”.

The book also further position the story in a broader global framework. This study broadens the fields of translation of and research on East Asian religion, literature, and culture by expanding our knowledge in Asian studies, folklore studies, and the study of animal representations in literature. Book The Golden Calf Between Bible and Qur an

Download or read book The Golden Calf Between Bible and Qur an written by Michael E. Pregill and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-06-12 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the story of the Israelites' worship of the Golden Calf in its Jewish, Christian, and Muslim contexts, from ancient Israel to the emergence of Islam. It focuses in particular on the Qur'an's presentation of the narrative and its background in Jewish and Christian retellings of the episode from Late Antiquity. Across the centuries, the interpretation of the Calf episode underwent major changes reflecting the varying cultural, religious, and ideological contexts in which various communities used the story to legitimate their own tradition, challenge the claims of others, and delineate the boundaries between self and other. The book contributes to the ongoing reevaluation of the relationship between Bible and Qur'an, arguing for the necessity of understanding the Qur'an and Islamic interpretations of the history and narratives of ancient Israel as part of the broader biblical tradition. The Calf narrative in the Qur'an, central to the qur'anic conception of the legacy of Israel and the status of the Jews of its own time, reflects a profound engagement with the biblical account in Exodus, as well as being informed by exegetical and parascriptural traditions in circulation in the Qur'an's milieu in Late Antiquity. The book also addresses the issue of Western approaches to the Qur'an, arguing that the historical reliance of scholars and translators on classical Muslim exegesis of scripture has led to misleading conclusions about the meaning of qur'anic episodes.

Download or read book Strange Gods written by Elizabeth Scalia and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2013-05-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned in the blogosphere as The Anchoress and as Catholic Portal editor of the popular Patheos.com, Elizabeth Scalia offers a powerful critique of the “gods” we worship today, reminding readers that life’s deepest desires can be satisfied only in Christ. Strange Gods, Scalia's debut book, is packed full of the iconoclastic vim and vigor that has won her a large, faithful Internet following. She presents readers with a surprising look at the ways in which modern people still commit the sin of idolatry in their everyday lives. While literal golden calves no longer dot the landscape, Scalia describes how legitimate loves become obsessively twisted into idols. She unmasks idolatry in a number of everyday experiences—friendships that become needy or possessive, commitments political and religious that grow so intense they lead to hatred of others, to name a few—and points to the incarnation of Christ and authentic worship of him as a way out of idolatry and into peace, happiness, and love.

  • Author : Youn Ho Chung

Download or read book The Sin of the Calf written by Youn Ho Chung and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-05-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship of the biblical tradition to golden calf worship seems to be entirely negative. In the Torah and the Book of Kings, harsh criticism is wielded against the golden calf the Israelites made in the wilderness (Exod 32; Deut 9:7-10:11) and the calves erected by Jeroboam ben Nebat (1 Kgs 12:26-33) at Dan and Bethel during his reign over the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Hence, the question arises as to whether Jeroboam in truth set up the golden calves in order to buck the postulates of the Israelite religion of his time; that is, was Jeroboam's golden calf really meant to lure Israel into worship of other gods or idolatry? The research into the background and factors which motivated negative attitudes towards the Golden Calf will provide an insight as to when prohibition of images in the Israelite religion became crystallized and how it was indispensable in proclamation of the monotheism of YHWH.

Book excerpt: When George Yancy penned a New York Times op-ed entitled “Dear White America” asking white Americans to confront the ways that they benefit from racism, he knew his article would be controversial. But he was unprepared for the flood of vitriol in response. The resulting blowback played out in the national media, with critics attacking Yancy in every form possible—including death threats—and supporters rallying to his side. Despite the rhetoric of a “post-race” America, Yancy quickly discovered that racism is still alive, crude, and vicious in its expression. In Backlash, Yancy expands upon the original article and chronicles the ensuing controversy as he seeks to understand what it was about the op-ed that created so much rage among so many white readers. He challenges white Americans to rise above the vitriol and to develop a new empathy for the African American experience.

After the seed of Christ was sown in Abram, there came among the descendants of Abram, a golden calf generation in the wilderness when Moses, their Redeemer, was still on Mount Sinai with God. It was a generation of idolatry and immorality. So, before the second coming of the Lord comes another golden calf generation.

Download or read book To Melt a Golden Calf written by Peter Aelred and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2013-09-27 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades now, outspoken evangelical Christians have been at the forefront of resisting the cultural shift towards accepting same-sex relationships. From the church pulpit to the political podium, condemnation of homosexuality has come to define the identity of evangelicalism. But what if it didn't have to be this way? What if same-sex relationships could be affirmed through an authoritative, infallible reading of the Bible? From an evangelical missionary who once fought in the culture wars against gay rights only to undergo a reluctant reversal, To Melt a Golden Calf stands out as a concise, biblical, and balanced defense of same-sex relationships. Drawing from bedrock Christian beliefs, Peter Aelred seeks to untangle the complicated questions around homosexuality, not for reasons of cultural accommodation, but for the sake of the Gospel itself. "I was touched by the compassion, challenge, and honesty with which he speaks to his theological family of origin. I suspect that many "evangelical Christians" will simply dismiss him as another one who has succumbed to the ways of the world, but for those who have had even an inklingthat one could be a committed and faithful Christian and not believe that same-sex relationships are inherently sinful, this will be a powerful read." --Rev. Bruce Reyes-Chow, church planter, writer, and Moderator of the 218th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) "While I would emphatically disagree with his conclusions, To Melt a Golden Calf is nevertheless an important book for Christians to read. Aelred is not the typical 'liberal' advocate traditionalists are used to encountering in the battle over homosexuality and the definition of marriage. Aelred's arguments will soon be coming to an evangelical church near you." --Wallace Marshall (M.Div., PhD.), Director, Reasonable Faith "Aelred turns our attention to often overshadowed issues regarding the Christian ethics of same-sex relationships. His arguments are both grounded in Scripture and historically-reflective, humbly but powerfully challenging evangelicals to rethink certain beliefs and practices in the name of Jesus." --Dr. Jennie Ikuta, professor of political philosophy and author of Democracy and the Quest for Human Flourishing "Biblically and theologically informed, Aelred courageously calls for Christians to get off the sidelines of history." --Dr. Karl Giberson, Scholar-in-Residence of Science & Religion at Stonehill College and author of more than 10 books on science and religion, including Saving the Original Sinner "Aelred introduces nuance and layers of complexity to an otherwise exhausting, polarized conversation. The intended effect succeeds in muddying the waters towards a posture of humility regarding how the evangelical church can move towards a more loving unity internally and with the LGBT community. Whether you agree or disagree with him, Aelred gives us some new ways to talk about sexual orientation and the church. This is a breath of fresh air." --Samantha Curley, Executive Director, Level Ground "Avoiding the trap of eisegesis, Aelred looks to the incarnational life of Christ to reframe biblical faithfulness to justice and mercy." --Nick Palacios, President, OneTable Fuller Theological Seminary
