Book Gold Stars and Purple Hearts

Download or read book Gold Stars and Purple Hearts written by Dr. Lynne Payne Phillips and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A coal miner, Don, drafted to fight with the elite Rainbow Division in WWI under General Douglas MacArthur; a pregnant wife with a toddler whose relationship with her mother-in-law is constantly strained; a mother whose love for her son had her leave her Appalachian Mountain home and travel to France on the Gold Star Mothers Pilgrimage in order to take the mountains to her son and bring her son back to the mountains; and Dons son who fights in WWII with the elite Devils Brigade, the first Special Forces Unit in the U.S. Army, are remarkable because these events really took place. This six-act play is the story of two men and two women whose lives were intertwined through blood and war. Sarah Williams Dyson (1874-1957) grew up in the North Carolina mountains with her country doctor father. Sarahs only son, Don, married Vennie Lee Shull in 1914 and moved to Dante, Virginia, to work in the coal mines. Dons draft into WWI in 1917 came at a time when married men were not subject to the draft. In 1923, Vennie remarried. After Vennies divorce, Sarah, 12 years after her sons death, was invited to view Dons tomb-rock in France with other mothers and widows. In 1942, Sarah and Vennie had to watch Dons son, Claude, volunteer to fight in WWII even though he was exempt from fighting since he was the only son of a casualty from WWI. Remembering his dads only written message to him: Dont never be a solder my boy, Claude returned home severely wounded. Don and Claude both received purple hearts and other medals for their bravery. This breed of historian forsakes the myths and yellow journalism and delves into the lives of the characters through primary sources of journals, military records, letters, family Bibles, and first-hand knowledge of neighbors, family, and friends of the characters in the play.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gold Stars and Purple Hearts--the War Dead of the Ravenna, Nebraska Area is a compilation of biographies of the young men from a little town in south-central Nebraska and immediate surrounding area who died while serving their country. The author begins the journey when the town came into being in 1886 and takes the reader up to war in Iraq. She has included a section of her remembrances of the Vietnam war from a fifth grader to young adult perspective. The biographies were compiled from meticulous research in the local newspaper archives, personal remembrances from the families and friends of the deceased, and letters written by the men. The author has also interwoven events from the little town that occurred during the war years. At times she has just exposed the local events with world events to give the book a well rounded flavor. As the author is an avid animal lover and advocate, she has included sections on the animal heroes and helpers in the various wars. Additionally, this book includes references to men and women who survived the wars and returned to their hometown to lead long and productive lives. The book is richly illustrated with photographs of the deceased, their final resting places, and current military memorials of the area. After reading this book, the reader will feel as if they knew these young men who gave their lives while serving their country.

Book The Gold Star Mother Pilgrimages of the 1930s

Download or read book The Gold Star Mother Pilgrimages of the 1930s written by John W. Graham and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-03-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first World War, a flag with a gold star identified families who had lost soldiers. Grieving women were "Gold Star" mothers and widows. Between 1930 and 1933, the United States government took 6,654 Gold Star pilgrims to visit their sons' and husbands' graves in American cemeteries in Belgium, England, and France. Veteran Army officers acted as tour guides, helping women come to terms with their losses as they sought solace and closure. The government meticulously planned and paid for everything from transportation and lodging to menus, tips, sightseeing, and interpreters. Flowered wreaths, flags, and camp chairs were provided at the cemeteries, and official photographers captured each woman standing at her loved one's grave. This work covers the Gold Star pilgrimages from their launch to the present day, beginning with an introduction to the war and wartime burial. Subsequent topics include the legislative struggle and evolution of the pilgrimage bill; personal pilgrimages, including that of the parents of poet Joyce Kilmer; the role of the Quartermaster Corps; the segregation controversy; a close examination of the first group to travel, Party A of May 1930; and the results of the pilgrimage experience as described by participants, observers, organizers, and scholars, researched through diaries, letters, scrapbooks, interviews, and newspaper accounts.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Michael Grant unleashes the gritty and powerful conclusion to the Front Line series and evokes the brutal truth of World War II: War is hell. An epic tale of historical reimagining, perfect for fans of Code Name Verity and Salt to the Sea. Courage, sacrifice, and fear have lead Rio, Frangie, and Rainy through front-line battles in North Africa and Sicily, and their missions are not over. These soldiers and thousands of Allies must fight their deadliest battle yet—for their country and their lives—as they descend into the freezing water and onto the treacherous sands of Omaha Beach. It is June 6, 1944. D-Day has arrived. No longer naive recruits, these soldier girls are now Silver Star recipients and battle-hardened. Book excerpt: During the Second World War, 291,577 men and women of the United States armed forces were killed in action in the fight against the Axis powers. Each of these service members was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal in recognition for the loss of their lives in the pursuit of worldwide freedom. Over the last seven decades, all but a few of these brave men and women have been forgotten. Subsequently, many of their Purple Hearts languished in attics and drawers for years before being donated to museums, surfacing at estate sales, or sold by families to people eager to rediscover their lost history. With the goal of educating and deepening the appreciation of the medal for families, historians, museums, and collectors, this book serves as a tangible reminder of ultimate sacrifice, providing a visual guide to Purple Heart medal and those who earned it. Through the biographies of over three hundred men who were awarded the Purple Heart after they were killed in action, this book conveys the meaning and importance of this medal and what it represents. Additionally, the variations, types, engraving styles, and manufacturing differences are examined at a level of detail never before published to give the reader a full appreciation of the development of the medal and how it changed over time to become the medal we know today. Sacrifice Remembered is a key reference across the historical research spectrum: from museums maintaining Purple Hearts in their collections to historians, researchers, and collectors seeking to appreciate essential details about the medal. Most importantly, families searching to discover their genealogical history will gain a better understanding of the tremendous sacrifices made by those who came before them.
