Book Ores of North Carolina Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ores of North Carolina Classic Reprint written by W. C. Kerr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ores of North Carolina I cannot hope to have emulated the skill which he showed in the collation of his data, but my close relations with him for a long term of years, and my great respect for his memory, have prompted me to do whatever I could. In my long connection with the U. S. Assay Office, Charlotte, N. C., I have come into possession of a large fund of facts respecting the min ing resources of the State. These facts were freely given to him, and he reciprocated, so that there came 'in time to be, as it were, a common fund of information, and, to a great degree, a community of views. About one third of this mass of material had been put' into shape by him, and in compiling the rest, I have endeavored to represent him, whenever possible; I have avoided theorizing, that I might not misrepresent him. The whole is compiled rather from the standpoint of the mining engineer than from that of the geologist. About two thirds of the section on iron, and a large part of that on Oopper are his; in those on lead and gold a considerably larger part is' due to the result of my own compilation. Book History of the Gems Found in North Carolina Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Gems Found in North Carolina Classic Reprint written by George Frederick Kunz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Gems Found in North Carolina North Carolina, with its magnificent mountains and its swiftly running rivers and streams, has now for some years come to possess almost as great a charm for the Northern as it long before had for the Southern tourist. The land of the Sky has become a favorite resort for the traveler, the invalid, the sportsman, the lover of nature, and the seeker for rest, from almost every part of the country. For the mineralogist, too, it has peculiar interest, so great, indeed, that its scenic attractions have, for such as he, been almost overmatched, not to say overlooked, in the search for the beautiful crystals that are found in its mountains, and the variety of rare, minute, and interesting minerals that occur in the brooks and streams associated with gold. Among these crystals and sands occur many minerals that have yielded true gems, and North Carolina has hence become one of the most notable States for gem pro duction in the American Union. The finding of these minerals, however, has been in most cases a secondary or incidental result in the search for and mining of substances more immediately desired for practical use on a larger scale. These last have been essentially three, which have developed in succession, and mark several stages in the mineral production of North Carolina. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biennial Report of the State Geologist, 1905-1906 Papers give not only the statistics of the actual production of these minerals, but also descriptions of new mineral localities, and calls particular attention to those that are apparently of economic impor tance. These statistics have now been collected for six years, and the past year has shown a decided increase in the value of the min eral products of the State. The statistics are arranged so as to show the value and quantity of each mineral produced, and also the quantity and value of all the mineral products Obtained from each county. There are certain min erals, as mica, monazite and zircon, for which North Carolina is especially noted, and she produces more of these than all the other States in the Union. The State's mineral products of greatest value are clay and building stones, and although these are being developed more and more each year, they are far from being produced as extensively as the quantity and quality of these products would war rant. The field work that has been carried on during the past two years has covered a wide area and has included the investigation of many minerals and ores. Gold. - The gold deposits, especially the low-grade ores, have been thoroughly investigated and the results are being prepared for publi cation as an Economic Paper on Further Investigations of the Gold Deposits of North Carolina. Therefore, only a short synopsis of this work, which has been done by Messrs. A. A. Steel, F. B. Laney and the State Geologist, is given here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Proprietors of Carolina In June, 1578, when Queen Elizabeth I made a generous grant of New World territory to Sir Humphrey Gilbert, she included the area which has since become North Carolina. In return for the Queen's bountiful gift, Gilbert was to lead an expedition to America to destroy hostile Spanish fishing fleets, take the West Indies from Spain, seize the gold and silver mines in the Spanish colonies, and make Elizabeth monarch of the seas. On his first trip to America, Gilbert was rebuffed by the Spanish, and he never returned from his second. His grant was renewed on March 24, 1584, in the name of his half-brother, Walter Raleigh, who was given authority to establish colonies and to govern them. Raleigh financed several expeditions to the New World including those which explored eastern North Carolina late in the sixteenth cen tury. I laid hold on this Opportunity, and was not long on board, before we fell down the river and sailed to Cowes; where, having taken in some passengers, we proceeded on our voyage, 'till we sprung a leak, and were forced into the Islands of Scilly. Here we spent about ten days in refitting. In which time we had a great deal of diversion in fishing and shooting on those rocky islands. The inhabitants were very courteous and civil, especially the governor, to whose good company and favor, we were very much obliged.
