Book Goethe s Poems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Goethe s Poems Classic Reprint written by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Goethe's Poems IN the preparation of this selection of the poems of Goethe, arranged in chronological order, my desire has been to furnish a commentary which should give the necessary explanations of words and phrases and also the history of the origin of each poem, so far as this is known. Nothing more has been attempted. N o excursion has been made into the fields of aesthetics, and there is no discussion of any of the fascinating problems which arise in the study of the great master; but even within its narrow limits the book must assuredly be very imper fect. The text is that of the Weimar edition. There are no intentional changes in the wording. In the matter of spelling and of the use of capital letters the Prussian rules have however been followed, and the punctuation has here and there been altered slightly, commonly by the more frequent employment of the comma. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poems of Goethe: Translated in the Original Metres My Dear Lady Granville, - The reluctance which must naturally be felt by any one in venturing to give to tho world a book such as the present, where the beauties of tho great original must inevitably be diminished, if not destroyed, in the process of passing through the translator's hands, cannot but be felt in all its force when that translator has not penetrated beyond the outer courts of the poetic fane, and can have no hope of advancing further, or of reaching its sanctuary. But it is to me a subject of peculiar satisfaction that your kind permission to have your name inscribed upon this page serves to attain a twofold end - one direct and personal, and relating to the present day; the other reflected and historical, and belonging to times long gone by Of the first little need now be said, for the privilege is wholly mine, in making this dedication: as to the second, one word of explanation will suffice for those who have made the greatest poet of Germany, almost of the world, their study, and to whom the story of his life is not unknown. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Goethe's Poems: Selected and Annotated, With a Study of the Development of Goethe's Art and View of Life in His Lyrical Poetry The current editions of Goethe's poems either follow the order of the final edition prepared under Goethe's care or substitute chronological arrangements. Most of the Ger man, and especially the unabridged, editions represent the former method. The two good American selections are in the chronological order; the older one, prepared by Professor Charles Harris, of Western Reserve University (d. 0. Heath Co., without deviations; and the slightly more recent one, by Professor Julius Goebel, of the University of Illinois (henry Holt and Company, with modifications necessitated by his suggestive main divisions. The principal disadvantage common to both these methods is that they fail to establish promptly and decisively the distinctive character of Goethe's work. Book Goethe and the Twentieth Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book Goethe and the Twentieth Century Classic Reprint written by John George Robertson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Goethe and the Twentieth Century Goethe is one of those chameleon-like personalities that change in value and meaning from generation to generation. Homer, Dante, Shakespeare have been given, once and for all, their place in the world's literature, and what we think about them to-day is not materially different from what our forefathers thought; but then those poets are, in comparison, infinitely far away from us; Goethe still stands too near. We must revise our opinion of him from time to time: keep, as it were, a check. on the pulse of our intellectual attitude to him. And this revision of judgment is something which we must do for ourselves. Germany, for the past five and twenty years at least, has been assiduously remoulding her literary opinions, and has progressed very far indeed from the old Hegelian self satisfaction with which she established the hierarchy of her classical poets about the middle of the past century. But we obviously cannot rely on Germany for our opinions of Goethe, any more than Germany can turn to us to find what she has to think about English poets. Book Shorter Poems of Goethe and Schiller

Download or read book Shorter Poems of Goethe and Schiller written by W. H. Van der Smissen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shorter Poems of Goethe and Schiller: In Chronological Order IT is no longer necessary to excuse or defend the chronological arrangement of poetical selections, which lends an additional interest both to the individual poems and to the collection as a whole. It is believed that the present little book is the first attempt not only to treat the two greatest of German poets conjointly in this way, but to weave together the biographical sketch and the poems in chronological order. While, however, the advantages and charms of such a plan are self-evident, it must not be forgotten that each poem is to-be regarded and enjoyed also for its own sake as a work of art, without reference to the temporary and accidental circumstances to which it owes its origin and existence. Book Goethe s Hermann Und Dorothea Classic Reprint

Download or read book Goethe s Hermann Und Dorothea Classic Reprint written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Goethe's Hermann Und Dorothea The present edition owes its origin to the wish of the publishers to include this favorite poem in their series of annotated texts. In the preparation of the notes it has been my purpose to lead from the study of the poem to a wider knowledge of the language of the author and of the period in which he lived, and to make this work serve as an introduction to a more critical study of Goethe's life and writings. I have sought to interpret the poem so far as was possible by illustration rather than by mere state ment or reference, believing that in the study of language nothing makes a truth so real as to see its actual use in the expression of thought. Most students have a keen joy in discovering that an isolated fact often illustrates a principle, and that certain truths entered into the poet's life and received manifold illustration in his writings. The use of any literary work will vary with the purpose of the instructor and the demands of his classes. A poem may be studied as an end in itself, or to illustrate the thoughts of the author and the place which it bears in the history of his life, or it may serve as is often the case as a single step in the acquisition of the language. Something of all these purposes enters into the reading of any work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wisdom of Goethe It was my desire in putting this little work before the public to leave the great poet to state his own case, and to make that impression on the unbiassed reader which words of true wisdom flowing into the soul, like healthy breezes into free lungs, natu rally make. But I soon became aware that, in the case of Goethe, few unbiassed readers were likely to be found on this Side of the Channel; and I could not conceal from myself the fact that the good impression to be made by the Wise words of the preacher might be seriously neutralised by the bad impression they entertained of his character. If it has been the good fortune of some great men to have had their virtues brought forward into the foreground, studiously dressed out and magnified, while their vices are cast into the shade and for.
