Book Byron s European Impact

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing

  • ISBN : 1443877735
  • Pages : 550 pages

Download or read book Byron s European Impact written by Peter Cochran and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-13 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of Lord Byron and his friend Sir Walter Scott had an influence on European literature which was immediate and profound. Peter Cochran’s book charts that influence on France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland and Russia, with individual chapters on Goethe, Pushkin, and Baudelaire – and one special chapter on Ibsen, who called Peer Gynt his Manfred. Cochran shows that, although Byron’s best work is his satirical writing, which is aimed in part at his earlier “romantic” material and its readership, his self-correction was not taken on board by many European writers (Pushkin being the exception), and it was the gloomy Byronic Heroes who held sway. These were often read as revolutionaries, but were in fact dead-end. It was a mythical, not a literary Byron whom people thought they had read. The book ends with chapters on three British writers who seem at last to have read Byron, in their different ways, accurately – Eliot, Joyce, and Yeats.

Book Sadness and Melancholy in German language Literature and Culture

Download or read book Sadness and Melancholy in German language Literature and Culture written by Mary Cosgrove and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2012 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on "Sadness and Melancholy in German-language Literature and Culture," volume 6 investigates the often subversive function and meaning of sadness and melancholy in German-language literature and culture from the seventeenth century to the present where, arguably, it has fallen from the heights of melancholy genius and artistic creativity of earlier epochs to become the embarrassing other of a Western civilization that prizes happiness as the mark of successful modern living. Interrogating the distinction between sadness as an anthropological constant and melancholy as a shifting cultural discourse, the contributions explore how different authors use established literary and cultural topoi from melancholy discourses to comment on topics as diverse as war, religion, gender inequality, and modernity. As well as essays on canonical figures including Goethe and Thomas Mann, the volume features studies of sadness in lesser-known writers such as Betty Paoli and Julia Schoch. -- From publisher's website.

Book Goethe s Faust

  • Author : Jane K. Brown
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 1986
  • ISBN : 9780801493904
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Goethe s Faust written by Jane K. Brown and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Jane K. Brown offers an original reading of Goethe's complex masterpiece in the context of European Romanticism. Looking at the two parts of Faust in sequence, she views the second part as an elaboration of what was implicit in the first, and she clarifies the patterns of thought and organization underlying the play. In Faust, she argues, Goethe not only situates German culture within the wider European literary tradition, but also demonstrates that all literature is by its nature allusive--that it exists only as part of a tradition.

Book Byron Shelley and Goethe s Faust

Download or read book Byron Shelley and Goethe s Faust written by Ben Hewitt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of Goethe's dramatic poem Faust (1808), one of the great works of German literature, grabbed the attention of Byron and Percy Shelley in the 1810s, engaging them in a shared fascination that was to exert an important influence over their writings. In this comparative study, Ben Hewitt explores the links between Faust and Byron's and Shelley's works, connecting Goethe and the two English Romantic poets in terms of their differing, intricately related experiments with epic. In so doing, Hewitt enters the three writers into a literary and philosophical dialogue concerning 'epic' and 'tragic' perspectives on human knowledge and potential - perspectives crucial to the very structure and significance of Goethe's masterpiece - and illuminates hitherto unacknowledged affinities between these key figures in Romantic literature, and between British and German Romanticisms.
