Book excerpt: God's Economy is a radical approach to economics based on the good news of the Kingdom of God. Everything on earth belongs to God, so all our economic activity is part of his economy, whether we acknowledge him or not. God's economy is a good economy. Since we have his ethical standards, we can describe how a good economy would function. What will produce the most wealth is not relevant. What matters for a follower of Jesus is obeying him. We want an economy that is right and good in his eyes, even if it does not function as well as other systems. It is better to be good before God than to be prosperous or wealthy. Modern economics is purely pragmatic, focusing on what will work. This book sees economic issues as ethical questions: what should be done, not what will work. Our question about every economic policy should be this: Is it morally right? Does it comply with God's word? Is it good? A good economic policy is one that complies with God's ethical standards. The irony is that the right economic policies may not achieve the goals that many politician's desire: fast economic growth or equal income distribution. However, Christians should always be advocates for the right policies, not effective policies. This book describes the Instructions for Economic Life that God gave through Moses. Jesus confirmed this guidance and adapted it for people who are loving one another in a Kingdom Community. Applying the Instructions for Economic Life will completely transform our economic behaviour and business activity. Topics include: - Unrighteous wealth - Giving and sharing - True wealth - Equality - Generous buying and selling - Sharing land - Debt - Transforming business activities - Savings and investment - Money - Problems with modern banking - Better money - Better financial institutions. Three Word Version Good economics can be expressed in three words (two in Hebrew). "Do not steal" (Ex 20:15). This is one of two universal laws that God gave through Moses. It is God's most important standard for economic behaviour. If an economic policy or practice involves stealing it is wrong. When investigating an economic problem, I ignore the symptoms and dig down to find the place where theft has occurred. This approach usually exposes the cause of economic problems, as they are mostly the result of a theft of some kind. Most of the economic teaching in the Old Testament is an application of the command prohibiting theft. Jesus' teaching about economic activity affirmed this principle. He described money that had been stolen as unrighteous wealth. Five Word Version God's economics can also be expressed in five words. "Love your neighbour as yourself" (Lev 19:18). The command was originally given by Moses as part of his instructions to the children of Israel. Jesus used this command as the heart of his teaching about economics. He said this is the second-greatest command, after loving God. "Love your neighbour as yourself" (Luke 10:27). James repeated the same command in his letter. The five-word version turns the three-word version positive. If we love people, we will not be able to steal from them. Love can guide all economic actions in the community in which we live. Jesus expanded the definition of our neighbour to include everyone whom we have contact with during everyday life. This means that our neighbour is not just those we like, or those living close by. Our neighbour is everyone we encounter while engaged in economic activity.

Book excerpt: God does not appear in the modern market. For most economists this is as it should be. It is in no way necessary, according to modern economic theory, to consider God when thinking about economy. Indeed, the absence of God in economic matters is viewed as necessary to the great advances in modern economy. The difficulty with modern market economies, however, is that human livelihood is also left out of the theory and practice of the market economy. ?"I propose to bring the church's teaching about God, the doctrine of the Trinity, to bear on the masked connections between God and economy. I will treat the Trinity as the way of understanding what the Bible calls the 'economy of God.'?

Book Universal Economics

Download or read book Universal Economics written by Armen Albert Alchian and published by Liberty Fund. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universal Economics is a new work that bears a strong resemblance to its two predecessors, University Economics (1964, 1967, 1972) and Exchange and Production (1969, 1977, 1983). Collaborating again, Professors Alchian and Allen have written a fresh presentation of the analytical tools employed in the economic way of thinking. More than any other principles textbook, Universal Economics develops the critical importance of property rights to the existence and success of market economies. The authors explain the interconnection between goods prices and productive-asset prices and how market-determined interest rates bring about the allocation of resources toward the satisfaction of consumption demands versus saving/investment priorities. They show how the crucial role of prices in a market economy cannot be well understood without a firm grasp of the role of money in a modern world. The Alchian and Allen application of information and search-cost analysis to the subject of money, price determination, and inflation is unique in the teaching of economic principles. No one has ever done price theory better than Alchian -- that is, no one has ever excelled Alchians ability to explain the reason, role, and nuances of prices, of competition, and of property rights. And only a precious few -- I can count them on my fingers -- have a claim for being considered to have done price theory as well as he did it. -- Donald Boudreaux, George Mason University. Armen A. Alchian (19142013), one of the twentieth centurys great teachers of economic science, taught at UCLA from 1958 to 1984. Founder of the UCLA tradition in economics, he has become recognized as one of the most influential voices in the areas of market structure, property rights, and the theory of the firm. William R. Allen taught at Washington University prior to joining the UCLA faculty in 1952. Along with research primarily in international economics and the history of economic theory, he has concentrated on teaching economics. Universal Economics is his third textbook collaboration with Armen Alchian. Jerry L. Jordan wrote his doctoral dissertation under the direction of Armen Alchian. He was Dean of the School of Management at the University of New Mexico, a member of President Reagans Council of Economic Advisors and of the U.S. Gold Commission, Director of Research of the Federal Reserve Bank of Saint Louis, and President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.

Book excerpt: Christian engagement with economics tends to baptize pre-existing sociopolitical perspectives, thereby assuming a predetermined metaphysical narrative. What happens when the story of the development of economics, told from an anthropological and sociological perspective, is juxtaposed with a biblical theology that focuses primarily on relationships? Wagenfuhr tests a theological method grounded in three kinds of relationships: Creatorcreature, estrangement, and Reconciler-reconciled, by comparing these with a fourth relationship: the economic. He argues that economic relationships, and the worlds they create throughout history, are the fruit of relationships estranged from God. Much theology has committed itself to a metaphysic rooted in the reality of economics and his told a metaphysical story that tends to legitimize current sociopolitical realities. Wagenfuhr argues that reconciliation with God is entirely subversive to economic relationships. No economic relationship or system is established or justified by God; but neither does he reject them. Instead, the love of God in Christ speaks the economic language of a people, with a critical edge, leading to loving subversion of any and all economic relationships. This book argues for a robust theology that offers the post-Christendom church a renewed sense of the total scale of God's mission of reconciliation.

Book Crucial Elements of God s Economy

Download or read book Crucial Elements of God s Economy written by Witness Lee and published by Living Stream Ministry. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we have seen a number of crucial matters. First, we need to spend time in the Word every day, for the word in the Bible embodies God, Christ, the Spirit, and life. The word and the Spirit are composed of Christ, His terminating death, and His enlivening resurrection. Every portion in the Bible is either the word of the cross or the word of life. We also need to see that the Lord's recovery is simply the recovery of Christ Himself as everything to us. If we see this, we will drop all concepts, ways, activities, and organization and simply cleave to Christ in everything. Furthermore, we need to realize that God's economy is God coming into us and that godliness is God flowing out of us. If we see and practice these things, we will live under the law of freedom. We need to review all these matters, fellowship concerning them, and practice them until they are wrought into our being. Then the church will be uplifted and enriched and will grow unto maturity.

Book excerpt: Printed in Partnership with The Center and Library for the Bible and Social Justice Can an economic system receive a response informed by biblical and theological ethics? This collection of five essays, first published in 1991, provides a solid yes to the way "prophetic criticism," rooted in the Hebrew tradition of social justice, can assess the state of today's market economy. In strong contrast to the conservative and Religious Right orientations of the 1980s, the writers of this book "crack the hegemony of neoconservatives in theology." They also provide strong arguments for what H. Richard Niebuhr called a transformational ethic. Norman Gottwald discusses the rise of the Hebrew prophets and their call for economic justice. William Tabb evaluates contemporary political economies in light of the prophetic tradition. Beverly Harrison develops a prophetic approach to current socio-economic troubles of the middle class. Gregory Baum reviews Catholic perspectives on international economic arrangements and trends. And finally, Dorothee Soelle describes the economic and political implications of the Hebrew concepts of the Sabbath and the Year of the Jubilee.

Book excerpt: In 1927 Watchman Nee published his spiritual classic on Christian growth and progress, The Spiritual Man. In that book Nee presents the seemingly simple biblical truth that man is composed of three parts--spirit and soul and body--as a central and necessary revelation for believers to grow and make progress in their spiritual life. In The Economy of God, Nee's closest and most trusted co-worker, Witness Lee, builds upon this foundation in order to unveil the central revelation of the Bible--that God wants to impart Himself into man for His full expression in the church. This is God's plan, God's economy. In The Economy of God, Lee clearly reveals the move of the Divine Trinity according to His economy and gives believers practical ways to cooperate with Him for the fulfillment of His eternal plan. Step by step, Witness Lee shows how to deal with obstacles to spiritual growth so that Christ may fully make His home in our hearts, that we may be filled unto all the fullness of God.

After receiving revelation from the Lord in October 2006, I discovered why I wasn't prospering as promised in the Bible. My beliefs were based upon my personal experiences rather than the word of God. I discovered I wasn't using all the talents that God created within me. These hidden talents are the seeds to our financial and business success. The Lord revealed to me that I should be living in God's economy of abundance and that my finances are not meant to be tied to the world's economic system. I was challenged to transform the way I think and learn to apply the principles of abundance in generating a 30-fold, 60-fold and 100-fold return. Once my eyes were opened to this revelation the Lord began to reveal opportunities to me. Yet, according to Scriptures, Biblical Economics predates our global economy. The author is a theologian and not an economist. He carefully approaches this sensitive, yet vital topic, as seen in the Word of God. Dispelling popular beliefs and understandings, he carefully dissects divine principles, with an underlying message - a devotional relationship with Jesus. Thus, this book is intended to bring us back to the heart of Biblical Economics, which is all about a devotional relationship with God - not rewards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should Christians be for or against the free market? For or against globalization? How are we to live in a world of scarcity? William Cavanaugh uses Christian resources to incisively address basic economic matters -- the free market, consumer culture, globalization, and scarcity -- arguing that we should not just accept these as givens but should instead change the terms of the debate. Among other things, Cavanaugh discusses how God, in the Eucharist, forms us to consume and be consumed rightly. Examining pathologies of desire in contemporary "free market" economies, Being Consumed puts forth a positive and inspiring vision of how the body of Christ can engage in economic alternatives. At every turn, Cavanaugh illustrates his theological analysis with concrete examples of Christian economic practices.
