Book The Mystery of Providence

Download or read book The Mystery of Providence written by John Flavel and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-09-27 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me (Psalm 57:2) The greatness of God is a glorious and unsearchable mystery. 'For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great king over all the earth' (Psalm 47:2). The condescension of the most high God to men is also a profound mystery. 'Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly' (Psalm 138:6). But when both these meet together, as they do in this Scripture, they make up a matchless mystery. Here we find the most high God performing all things for a poor distressed creature. It is the great support and solace of the saints in all the distresses that befall them here, that there is a wise Spirit sitting in all the wheels of motion, and governing the most eccentric creatures and their most pernicious designs to blessed and happy issues. And, indeed, it were not worthwhile to live in a world devoid of God and Providence.

Book excerpt: New from Best-Selling Author John Piper From Genesis to Revelation, the providence of God directs the entire course of redemptive history. Providence is "God's purposeful sovereignty." Its extent reaches down to the flight of electrons, up to the movements of galaxies, and into the heart of man. Its nature is wise and just and good. And its goal is the Christ-exalting glorification of God through the gladness of a redeemed people in a new world. Drawing on a lifetime of theological reflection, biblical study, and practical ministry, pastor and author John Piper leads us on a stunning tour of the sightings of God's providence—from Genesis to Revelation—to discover the allencompassing reality of God's purposeful sovereignty over all of creation and all of history. Piper invites us to experience the profound effects of knowing the God of all-pervasive providence: the intensifying of true worship, the solidifying of wavering conviction, the strengthening of embattled faith, the toughening of joyful courage, and the advance of God's mission in this world.

Book The Great Mystery of God s Providence and Other Works

Download or read book The Great Mystery of God s Providence and Other Works written by C. Matthew McMahon and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This particular work by Gifford contains six pieces now updated into current modern print. The first work is worth the cost of the volume itself. It is his treatise on The Great Mystery of God’s Providence, on Genesis 45:8, concerning the historical narrative of Joseph coming to power in Egypt by God’s providence. He particularly deals with the question, “To what degree does the holy and righteous God make use of the evil actions of wicked men and devils, without any impeachment of his righteousness and holiness?” This is a wonderful and masterful treatise that will expand your view of the great mystery of God’s providence in the world, not only in Joseph’s time, but throughout all of redemptive history, including our own time. In his second piece, he covers James 2:26, “…so faith without works is dead,” while comparing both Paul’s use of justification by faith, and James’ use of justification by works. In his third sermon on James 3, he covers the manner in which the Christian’s speech ought to glorify God, and how, very often, that it does not. This is especially proven out by dealing with Christians in the church, where out of the same mouth comes blessing and cursing. In his fourth piece, he demonstrates the need and virtue of true fortitude to the glory of God. In this, he considers the strength and vigor of the Christian in all they do in zeal for the glory of Christ. In his fifth piece on Psalm 133:1 he covers the need and commendation of unity in the church, the unity of the Spirit, in the bond of peace, as set down by David in the Psalm, and echoed in Ephesians by Paul. His final piece is an explanation of the parable of the sower from Matt. 13:1-9, teaching that in the innumerable multitude that came to hear Christ’s heavenly doctrine, the Savior shows that out of this great number of people that were so zealous and traveled so far, there were three groups out of four that did not profit by his teaching and were therefore still creatures under damnation. Only one group of the four were true hearers. In all these works Gifford is very easy to read, yet, exegetically sound and practically deep.

Book The Providence of God

Download or read book The Providence of God written by David Martyn Lloyd-Jones and published by Felipe chavarro. This book was released on with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this issue of the Free Grace Broadcaster, you will discover the God Who is God—the God Who reigns over every atom in His spectacular universe. Benjamin Beddome introduces us to our Sovereign by showing how His great works of creation and providence are related. David Martyn Lloyd-Jones defines providence by examining its three elements—preservation, government, and concurrence. Then, Arthur W. Pink explains the meaning of the Godhood of God and why it is crucial for Christians to understand it in opposition to the dignity, power, and attainments of man. But what is providence like and from what does it arise, properly understood? William S. Plumer tells us that God’s providence is like God’s nature—holy, just, benevolent, wise, sovereign, stable, and irresistible! Pink then explains so beautifully that God rules everything—all inanimate matter, irrational creatures, human beings, and all angels, good and evil. How can such a lofty doctrine be practical to believers? Joel Beeke gives us sound answers from the infallible Scriptures and from the Puritans. To compliment those answers, Thomas Watson gives biblical instruction in the ways that our sovereign God works all things for good to His eternally loved people. There is one aspect of providence that especially thrills the heart of all believers: how God worked in His sovereign, powerful, and mysterious ways to bring them to saving faith in Christ and to everlasting life! John Flavel reminds us of that astonishing work and the surprising mercies of God’s grace! Lastly, Thomas Reade concludes our subject by filling our souls with a glorious vision of God’s absolute reign by Christ Jesus in our hearts. Articles: Creation & Providence - Benjamin Beddome (1717-1795) - From a Baptist catechism, here is a beautiful and brief introduction to the doctrines of creation and providence and how these distinct works of God relate. Defining Providence - David Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) - a survey and description of the three elements of providence: preservation, rule, and concurrence. The Godhood of God - Arthur W. Pink (1886-1952) - This expression has fallen out of use among many modern Christians; so, what does it mean? Answer: The absolute rule of the living God over all things according to His eternal purpose. The Properties of Providence - William S. Plumer (1802-1880) - God’s providential rule arises from God’s glorious character: it is holy, just, benevolent, wise, sovereign, stable, and irresistible. God Rules Everything - Arthur W. Pink (1886-1952) - The one true and living Sovereign governs inanimate matter, irrational creatures, all human beings, and all angels—both good and evil. God's Providence Applied - Joel Beeke - God’s absolute rule over all people, things, and events is the most practical of doctrines for daily life. God is in control! Upon that supreme truth we may take comfort and encouragement every day. All Things Work for Good - Thomas Watson (1620-1686) - a helpful explanation of how every event in the believer’s life is working for his or her eternal good and God’s eternal glory. Providence & Conversion - John Flavel (1627-1691) - Little in the life of believers brings as much joy, comfort, strength, and worship as realizing all that God has done to save them in Jesus Christ. The Lord God Omnipotent - Thomas Shaw B. Reade (1776-1841) - To know God in Christ is to possess all the sources and secrets of true peace in the storms of life and the certainty of everlasting life in the world to come.

Book excerpt: Sex. Race. Scripture. Sovereignty. The book of Ruth entails them all. So readers shouldn't be fooled by its age, says Pastor John Piper. Though its events happened over 3,000 years ago, the story holds astounding relevance for Christians in the twenty-first century. The sovereignty of God, the sexual nature of humanity, and the gospel of God's mercy for the undeserving-these massive realities never change. And since God is still sovereign, and we are male or female, and Jesus is alive and powerful, A Sweet and Bitter Providence bears a message for readers from all walks of life. But be warned, Piper tells his audience: This ancient love affair between Boaz and Ruth could be dangerous, inspiring all of us to great risks in the cause of love.

Book The Mystery of Providence

Download or read book The Mystery of Providence written by John Flavel and published by . This book was released on 2022-06-18 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mystery of Providence was first published by John Flavel in 1678. Rev. John Flavel (1627-1691) was an English Puritan minister, writer and theologian committed to the beliefs and teaching of the Protestant Reformation. He believed in the biblical truth of the profound balance between God's sovereignty and man's responsibility---in submission to the will and designs of God in our lives. Flavel's approach to the subject of Providence was not always the most popular in that it is the duty of believers to observe all the performances of God's providence for them, especially amidst trials and suffering. When John Flavel writes regarding the Providence of God, he does not simply provide truth, he writes in a captivating way out of a full heart and experiences of the trials and triumphs of life on this side of eternity. He knows from Church history and from his own experience of the works of God on behalf of His people. Above all, he was intimately acquainted with the Word of God and seasoned in its application. His treatise is designed to abase man and exalt God, and yet composed to excite faith and adoration in the heart of every child of God. "The Mystery of Providence" will undoubtedly bring Christian believers into a deep consideration of God's work of instruction and preservation in their lives. We are confident it will also prompt life-changing reflection on how we may live a consecrated and victorious life? Flavel reveals that it is the duty of believers to observe all the performances of God's providence for them, especially when they are in difficulties. Clearly, this conviction is not shared by the majority of evangelical Christians in the present day. Let us learn that, in an ultimate sense, we can never be outside of the will of God. Flavel would teach us that God's will for us is our duty to be found in His Word. "Providence carries our lives, liberties and concerns in its hand every moment."-- Flavel

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Covenant of the Torch made with Abraham is the most significant among all the covenants in the Bible. Why? It's the most detailed yet condensed summary of God's divine administration for redemption that outlines the work of restoration of His godly people and holy land. In this book, Rev. Abraham Park brings to life the Covenant of the Torch and helps us to understand--accurately, and in chronological detail--692 years of redemptive history starting from Abraham, including the great exodus, the wilderness journey and the conquest of Canaan. Just as his best-seller The Genesis Genealogies has helped readers to better understand the time frames and relationships in The Book of Genesis, Rev. Park now helps us to study the books of Exodus up to Joshua carefully and to realize what those events and participants tell us regarding God's larger plan. This book offers: A detailed chronology of 692 years from Abraham to the Israelites' conquest of Canaan. The first-ever map of all 42 campsites in the wilderness. Color photos of the locations in the wilderness journey. A theologically sound method of viewing God's Word through the perspective of God's administration in the history of redemption. Wisdom and insight on how to overcome the spiritual "wilderness" in our lives of faith today. Despite periods of spiritual darkness, unbelief, complaining and grumbling by the people of God as they wandered in the desert, we see God's faithfulness in fulfilling His Word and the Covenant of the Torch. And by understanding the chronological flow of the biblical events in a systematic manner, we gain a much broader and deeper grasp of God's plan of salvation. This title is part of The History of Redemption series which includes: Book 1: The Genesis Genealogies Book 2: The Covenant of the Torch Book 3: The Unquenchable Lamp of the Covenant Book 4: God's Profound and Mysterious Providence Book 5: The Promise of the Eternal Covenant
