Book excerpt: This scripture was revealed through spirit writing in 1181. It traces Wenchang’s development through his many transformations culminating in his apotheosis as director of the Wenchang Palace and custodian of the Cinnamon Record that determines men’s and women’s fates. The god has since assumed a high position in the Taoist pantheon, has been introduced into the school system and Confucian temples, and now controls the all-important civil service examinations in China. The text translated here provides a unique window into the religious world of Traditional China. Numerous anecdotes of good- and evil-doers reveal the ethical dilemmas facing men and women of the time, from social questions like infanticide and discrimination against women to more purely religious issues such as how evil gods are punished and how China’s divergent religious traditions can be reconciled.

  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2017

  • Pages : 221 pages

Download or read book God s Own Ethics written by Mark C. Murphy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every version of the argument from evil requires a premise concerning God's motivation - about the actions that God is motivated to perform or the states of affairs that God is motivated to bring about. The typical source of this premise is a conviction that God is, obviously, morally perfect, where God's moral perfection consists in God's being motivated to act in accordance with the norms of morality by which both we and God are governed. The aim of God's Own Ethics is to challenge this understanding by giving arguments against this view of God as morally perfect and by offering an alternative account of what God's own ethics is like. According to this alternative account, God is in no way required to promote the well-being of sentient creatures, though God may rationally do so. Any norms of conduct that favor the promotion of creaturely well-being that govern God's conduct are norms that are contingently self-imposed by God. This revised understanding of divine ethics should lead us to revise sharply downward our assessment of the force of the argument from evil while leaving intact our conception of God as an absolutely perfect being, supremely worthy of worship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Right-wing evangelical Christianity has come to dominate American political and social life in recent years, dividing the country and sparking cultural and moral battles. High politics and low tactics frame a fierce debate which goes much further back in the country's history than the accession of George W. Bush in 2001. It's a battle that sears America's soul and affects the world. In this book Stephen Bates explains why what happens in the Bible Belt matters to us and how there are those who hope to export the battle to Britain. American fundamentalist religion has the potential to impact on crucial and acutely dangerous areas of the world. Its priorities are often arcane and sometimes weird. But it is already affecting American government policy at home and abroad: not least in Israel and the Middle East. How is religion affecting the current presidential elections and where will America's battle for its soul take the world next?

Book THEYYAM Stories of Gods of God s Own Country

Download or read book THEYYAM Stories of Gods of God s Own Country written by Tiger Rider and published by EPM Mavericks LLC. This book was released on 2022-10-02 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This storybook is the second part of the book: "The Gods of The God's Own Country: THEYYAM "(https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BD3M3MJ5). Publishing it as volume II because of Amazon's file size limit (650MB). The Gods of God's Own Country is a reminder of a forgotten culture and the communities surrounding it. Theyyam is a Dravidian ritual art form of Kerala, India - God's own country. This book provides detailed information about Theyyam, beautiful images, and hundreds of stories. We dedicate this book to the Theyyam artists, the veritable gods "Of the People, by the People, for the People." The author had the amazing grace of chasing the light with his camera during his management consulting, and volunteer roles, embarking upon expeditions in and around twenty countries over the past three decades. However, he has yet to catch sight of a place where over 500 gods descend upon the earth during a single season. Sandwiched between the Western Ghats mountain range (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the queenly Arabian sea, carpeted by natural greenery, the hilly terrains of North Malabar open it's off-beat paths for the Theyyam Gods to embrace the gods-forsaken disciples. Thanks to those Theyyam Gods, the Malabar corner is that truly shining city on a hill. These gods double-up as costume designers, painters, musicians, artisans, drummers, and choreographers. They transcend the human realms and have burgeoned into a mystical form, where they endure blazing fires and carry hefty costumes effortlessly. The Gods of The God's Own Country takes you on a whirlwind ride into the dense history and astonishing versatility of Theyyam, the ritual dance of the glistening cities atop the Malabar Hills of God's Own Country – Kerala. It is rich in captivating images of Theyyam and storytelling. The book's second part embarks on the Herculean task of covering the centuries-old, mesmerizing 101 Theyyam stories. Like the Blues in the Mississippi Delta, using song and dance, the Thottam and Theyyam express the melancholy of the Dravida, natives of God's Own Country, submerged under the 5000-year-old Chaturvarnya caste system. A true divine rebellion against mighty, unjust systems, their stories and art pluck a string in our own hearts today.

Of course, that was only the start of his problems. Next, there was the Order of Tomanak, many of whom were horrified by the notion that their deity had chosen a hradani as a champion . . . and intended to do something about it. And assuming he survived that, he had to go home-across three hundred leagues of bitter winter snow-to face a Dark God who threatened to destroy all hradani. Throw in the odd demon and brigand ambush, and add a powerful neighboring kingdom with no intention of letting Bahzell (or anyone else) save his people, and you have the makings of a really bad day. But one thing Bahzell has learnea champion of Tomanak does what needs doing. And the people in his way had better move.
