Book excerpt: “We are homesick everywhere,” writes Tishani Doshi, “even when we’re home.” With aching empathy, righteous anger, and rebellious humor, A God at the Door calls on the extraordinary minutiae of nature and humanity to redefine belonging and unveil injustice. In an era of pandemic lockdown and brutal politics, these poems make vital space for what must come next—the return of wonder and free movement, and a profound sense of connection to what matters most. From a microscopic cell to flightless birds, to a sumo wrestler and the tree of life, Doshi interrupts the news cycle to pause in grief or delight, to restore power to language. A God at the Doorinvites the reader on a pilgrimage—one that leads us back to the sacred temple of ourselves. This is an exquisite, generous collection from a poet at the peak of her powers.

To make matters worse, a crazed duo of serial killers have now made Tryal their target of obsession. Book excerpt: Using the Bible as my structural outline, I have, with much imagination, charted the story of the spirit world, as angels, demons, God, and Satan struggle to claim ownership of the human race. The climax of this age-old battle is the appearance of God's champion, Jesus, and the solution He alone offers to each one of us. The story begins in eternity past and concludes in eternity yet to come. I hope you can identify yourself somewhere in the stream of traffic, and, in the knowledge of the accomplishment God's Champion made real, you can with thanksgiving write a personal postscript, "And we lived happily ever after."

  • Pages : 516 pages

Download or read book Peking Paper Gods written by Anne Swann Goodrich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1991 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paper gods are thin pieces of paper on which the image of diverse deities of the Chinese pantheon has been printed, usually by carved wooden blocks. In North China commonly known as "paper horses" (chih-ma), these prints form an important part of Chinese popular religious cults. Widely spread among the population, from peasants to high officials, they were hung in homes, shops and places of work as a protection against evil spirits. The prints were also burnt as a means of transporting the deity represented to heaven. Anne S. Goodrich has collected a large number of those "paper horses" during the years she spent in Peking in the 1930s. The book presents numerous specimens of her unique collection in black-and-white illustrations, arranged according to the different types of gods, among them Gods of Wealth (Ts'ai-shen), Gods of Medicine, Patron Deities, and Household Gods. The prints show deities worshiped in Chinese popular beliefs as well as Taoist and Buddhist deities. The author analyses each print, its symbolism and iconography, and gives a detailed explanation of the specific deity's significance and the rituals and festivals connected with this deity.
