Book Shakespeare and Republicanism

Download or read book Shakespeare and Republicanism written by Andrew Hadfield and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-21 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking work, first published in 2005, reveals exactly how Shakespeare was influenced by contemporary strands in political thought that were critical of the English crown and constitution. Shakespeare has often been seen as a conservative political thinker characterised by an over-riding fear of the 'mob'. Hadfield argues instead that Shakespeare's writing emerged out of an intellectual milieu fascinated by republican ideas. From the 1590s onwards, he explored republican themes in his poetry and plays: political assassination, elected government, alternative constitutions, and, perhaps most importantly of all, the problem of power without responsibility. Beginning with Shakespeare's apocalyptic representation of civil war in the Henry VI plays, Hadfield provides a series of powerful new readings of Shakespeare and his time. For anyone interested in Shakespeare and Renaissance culture, this book is required reading.

Book The Contemporary Printed Literature of the English Counter Reformation between 1558 and 1640

Download or read book The Contemporary Printed Literature of the English Counter Reformation between 1558 and 1640 written by A.F. Allison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an annotated bibliography of Catholic books in English printed abroad or secretly in England at a time when Catholic printing was prohibited in England and such books, when discovered by the authorities, were seized and destroyed. It includes all the 930 items listed in the authors' A Catalogue of Catholic Books in English..., 1956 (A&R) except for a handful which, for reasons of consistency, were described in volume I of the present work (Scolar Press, 1989), and it adds a further twenty-five on which information has come to light more recently. The annotations, historical, literary and bibliographical, are very much fuller than those in A&R and include a vast amount of evidence now brought together for the first time. The true authors of many anonymous and pseudonymous books are identified and many books issued with a false imprint, or no imprint at all, are assigned to particular presses. In each entry, up to fifteen locations are given where known. A concordance links the entries with those in A&R to facilitate cross-reference from one to the other, and indexes of titles, printers and publishers, and persons (including foreign authors) mentioned in the text are provided. The volume concludes with a short list of Addenda and Corrigenda to volume I.

Download or read book Sovereignty RIP written by Don Herzog and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has the concept of sovereignty outlived its usefulness? SSocial order requires a sovereign: an actor with unlimited, undivided, and unaccountable authority. Or so the classic theory says. But without noticing, we've gutted the theory. Constitutionalism limits state authority. Federalism divides it. The rule of law holds it accountable. In vivid historical detail--with millions tortured and slaughtered in Europe, a king put on trial for his life, journalists groaning at idiotic complaints about the League of Nations, and much more--Don Herzog charts both the political struggles that forged sovereignty and the ones that undid it. He argues that it's no longer a helpful guide to our legal and political problems, but a pernicious bit of confusion. It's time, past time, to retire sovereignty.

Book The Library of a Jesuit Community at Holbeck Nottinghamshire 1679

Download or read book The Library of a Jesuit Community at Holbeck Nottinghamshire 1679 written by Hendrik Dijkgraaf and published by Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (ACMRS). This book was released on 2003 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Holbeck catalogue is apparently the only recorded 17th-century Jesuit missionary library. There are of course several catalogues of Jesuit institutional libraries in France, Germany and elsewhere, but these are libraries solely for the clergy, and in some cases these libraries lost their Jesuit identity through being swamped by large gifts from outside sources. The Holbeck library, on the other hand, was just large enough to be a working tool, and compact enough to have a recognizable identity. Dr Dijkgraaf has supplied a comprehensive account of the library and its context and thanks to his elaborate analysis of the contents, we are able to rationalize and justify the presence of each and every book on the shelves."--BOOK JACKET.
