Book The Hole Truth

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bill Felber
  • Publisher : University of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2019-01-01
  • ISBN : 1496206541
  • Pages : 327 pages

Download or read book The Hole Truth written by Bill Felber and published by University of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever wonder whether Tiger Woods in his prime would have beaten Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, or Jack Nicklaus in their primes? And could any of them have beaten Babe Zaharias? Obviously, if Bobby Jones were returned to life and health and then given his old hickory-shafted mashie, persimmon-headed driver, and rubber-core ball in a match against Jordan Spieth, the outcome would be foreordained. But what if the impact of the training, equipment, courses, and traveling conditions could be neutralized in order to create a measurement? Now for the first time, questions are answered about the relative abilities of the greatest players in the history of professional golf. In The Hole Truth Bill Felber provides a relativistic approach for evaluating and comparing the performance of golfers while acknowledging the game’s changing nature. The Hole Truth analyzes the performances of players relative to their peers, creating an index of exceptionality that automatically factors the changing nature of the game through time. That index is based on the standard deviation of the performances of players in golf’s recognized major championships dating back to 1860. More than two hundred players are rated in comparison with one another, more than sixty of them in detail with profiles providing context on their ranking. For the dedicated golf fan, The Hole Truth is an engaging way to see in the numbers where their favorite golfers rank across eras and where current players like Rory McIlroy and Inbee Park compare to the game’s greats.

Book The Snow Leopard and the Goat

    Book Details:
  • Author : Shafqat Hussain
  • Publisher : University of Washington Press
  • Release : 2020-01-10
  • ISBN : 0295746580
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book The Snow Leopard and the Goat written by Shafqat Hussain and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2020-01-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the downgrading of the snow leopard’s status from “endangered” to “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2017, debate has renewed about the actual number of snow leopards in the wild and the most effective strategies for coexisting with these enigmatic animals. Evidence from Pakistan and other countries in the snow leopard’s home range shows that they rely heavily on human society—domestic livestock accounts for as much as 70 percent of their diet. Maintaining that the snow leopard is a “wild” animal, conservation NGOs and state agencies have enacted laws that punish farmers for attacking these predators, while avoiding engaging with efforts to mitigate the harms suffered by farmers whose herds are reduced by snow leopards. This ethnography examines the uneven distribution of costs and benefits involved in snow leopard conservation and shows that for the conservation of nature to be successful, the vision, interests, and priorities of those most affected by conservation policies—in this case, local farmers—must be addressed. A case history of Project Snow Leopard in the mountains of northern Pakistan, which inspired similar programs in India, Bhutan, Nepal, Mongolia, Afghanistan and Tajikistan, describes how the animal’s food habits are studied, how elusive individuals are counted, and how a novel kind of “snow leopard insurance” has protected the species by compensating farmers for livestock losses. The Snow Leopard and the Goat demonstrates that characterizing this conflict as one between humans (farmers) and wildlife (snow leopards) is misleading, as the real conflict is between two human groups—farmers and conservationists—who see the snow leopard differently.

Book GoatMan

Download or read book GoatMan written by Thomas Thwaites and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dazzling success of The Toaster Project, including TV appearances and an international book tour, leaves Thomas Thwaites in a slump. His friends increasingly behave like adults, while Thwaites still lives at home, "stuck in a big, dark hole." Luckily, a research grant offers the perfect out: a chance to take a holiday from the complications of being human—by transforming himself into a goat. What ensues is a hilarious and surreal journey through engineering, design, and psychology, as Thwaites interviews neuroscientists, animal behaviorists, prosthetists, goat sanctuary workers, and goatherds. From this, he builds a goat exoskeleton—artificial legs, helmet, chest protector, raincoat from his mum, and a prosthetic goat stomach to digest grass (with help from a pressure cooker and campfire)—before setting off across the Alps on four legs with a herd of his fellow creatures. Will he make it? Do Thwaites and his readers discover what it truly means to be human? GoatMan tells all in Thwaites's inimitable style, which NPR extols as "a laugh-out- loud-funny but thoughtful guide through his own adventures."

  • Pages : 175 pages

Download or read book Goat written by Joy Hinson and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2014-11-15 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From “Three Billy Goats Gruff” to The Men Who Stare at Goats, this inimitable ruminant has long played a role in our literature and popular culture. And yet, our relationship with the “poor man’s cow” is oddly ambivalent. In the beautifully illustrated Goat, Joy Hinson explores the reason behind this unease while presenting readers with the animal’s fascinating natural history and its effect on myth, medicine, and culture. Hinson traces the history of goats from their evolution millions of years ago through their domestication and role in the modern world. She delves into our interaction with endangered wild goat species and the familiar farmyard goat, and she reveals the harm done by humans in indiscriminately importing tamed goats, leading to huge feral populations in Australia and on the Galapagos Islands. Hinson also considers the place of goat products in culinary and medical traditions, from the pouring of goat urine into the ear as a cure for neck pain to the belief that a goat’s bezoar stone can be used as an antidote for poison. From Goat Festivals in the United States to the Christmas Goat in Sweden, Goat takes readers on an exciting ride through this frequently neglected animal’s history, life, and role in today’s world.

Book excerpt: "And at this point, it's the other side that has the burden of proof on their hands. The other side...Someone needs to come to me, and explain to me what Jordan is better at than LeBron without saying the words, 'Six Rings.'" - Nick WrightG.O.A.T. Envy is a direct response to Nick Wright's challenge.Michael Jordan or LeBron James? Which one is the G.O.A.T.--the Greatest Basketball Player of All Time? "G.O.A.T. Envy: An Analysis of the Role Fan Narrative Plays in the Debate Over Which #23 is the Greatest Basketball Player of All Time" gives readers a fresh take on the GOAT debate. Michael Fry's GOAT Envy Comparison Analysis measures both data and context in the comparison between Michael Jordan and LeBron James. In the book, he analyzes the role that fan narratives play in the debate, and the effects sports talk shows and social media have on the opinions formed by fans.In the book, Fry details how Wright's challenge became a dare, and how the debate became a journey. He ponders how the debate might become fun again--if it's a "field" where both the "romance of times gone by" and "being a prisoner of the moment" can coexist. And his hope is that when fans take part in the debate going forward, that they will strive to be more "like Frank," instead of "that guy."G.O.A.T. Envy is a book about the debate, but also something more. It's a book about sports. It's a book about life. In it, Fry weaves his own story. He explains how he set out to prove which fan base has the best GOAT case, and which one has what he calls, "GOAT Envy." But along the journey he learns lessons that urge him to re-examine the narratives in his own life, and help him come to some surprising conclusions.

Book Streetball Is Life

Download or read book Streetball Is Life written by Paul Volponi and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From award-winning young adult author Paul Volponi comes the true story of his unforgettable summer spent proving himself as a legitimate New York City streetballer, only later discovering that he had gained a set of skills that would enhance his life off the court, as well. During the sweltering summer of seventeen-year-old Paul Volponi’s life, he had only one goal—he wanted, no, needed to become a legitimate and respected New York City street basketball player. It was a passion that consumed him night and day, and at times even isolated him from his friends and family. So he entered through the gates of the Proving Ground, the roughest streetball yard in the city. It was a place where the fouls resembled felonies, and the atmosphere mirrored that of the Roman Coliseum more than Madison Square Garden. It was where teens and adults contested pickup games with a ferocity seemingly greater than that of the NBA Finals. The Proving Ground was a difficult place to cultivate friendships and an easy environment to make enemies. This is the story of Paul’s summer-long initiation at the Proving Ground. It is truly a streetball testament of a teenager who wanted more than anything else to earn his stripes in streetball society. Only what he didn’t understand at the time was that this experience would deliver to him, as it does today for so many young adults, a set of skills that would enhance his life far beyond the boundaries of a basketball court.

Book The Men Who Stare at Goats

Download or read book The Men Who Stare at Goats written by Jon Ronson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now a major film, starring George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, and Jeff Bridges, this New York Times bestseller is a disturbing and often hilarious look at the U.S. military's long flirtation with the paranormal—and the psy-op soldiers that are still fighting the battle. Bizarre military history: In 1979, a crack commando unit was established by the most gifted minds within the U.S. Army. Defying all known laws of physics and accepted military practice, they believed that a soldier could adopt the cloak of invisibility, pass cleanly through walls, and—perhaps most chillingly—kill goats just by staring at them. They were the First Earth Battalion, entrusted with defending America from all known adversaries. And they really weren’t joking. What’s more, they’re back—and they’re fighting the War on Terror. An uproarious exploration of American military paranoia: With investigations ranging from the mysterious “Goat Lab,” to Uri Geller’s covert psychic work with the CIA, to the increasingly bizarre role played by a succession of U.S. presidents, this might just be the funniest, most unsettling book you will ever read—if only because it is all true and is still happening today.
