Book Higher Goals for America

Download or read book Higher Goals for America written by Stuart S. Nagel and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1989 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to bring together a number of ideas that relate to the analysis of public policy issues for the presidential campaigns of 1988. These issues are also relevant to 1992 and thereafter since the emphasis is on long-term concerns. The book is organized in terms of the need for higher goals for America, incentives for achieving higher goals, improving American constitutional effectiveness, coordinating the public and private sectors and public policy substance methods. Beginning with goals on a high level of generality or applicability, the author then discusses middle range means for achieving them, with an emphasis on economic incentives, political structures, and legal rules. Specific policy problems and systematic methods for analyzing them are also included. One important feature of this book is that it is concerned with issues relevant to the presidential campaigns of Democrats and Republicans, or liberals and conservatives within the political parties. Contains charts and tables.

Book Revitalizing America

Download or read book Revitalizing America written by Donald L. Cleveland and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-04-10 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revitalizing America takes an in-depth look at the promises of democracy made to Americans and the world, and the betrayals of those promises. The promises laid out in the Declaration of Independence, the Preamble to the Constitution, the Gettysburg Address and the Pledge of Allegiance have created a Santa Claus type myth about our government that is shattered every day in the world of real politics. The victims are "we the people." Our grievances can be recited just as the American revolutionists called out the king's offenses in the Declaration of Independence. They run the gamut from violations of human and civil rights, massive secret tests using poisonous materials on the citizenry without public knowledge or consent to old fashioned bribery and greed of public officials. It's our duty to remember our country was born through a revolution, and we must revitalize our democracy through a political and economic revolution. The people need to take back the government. www.revitalizeamericanow.org

Book Successful K 12 STEM Education

Download or read book Successful K 12 STEM Education written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-06-22 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are cultural achievements that reflect our humanity, power our economy, and constitute fundamental aspects of our lives as citizens, consumers, parents, and members of the workforce. Providing all students with access to quality education in the STEM disciplines is important to our nation's competitiveness. However, it is challenging to identify the most successful schools and approaches in the STEM disciplines because success is defined in many ways and can occur in many different types of schools and settings. In addition, it is difficult to determine whether the success of a school's students is caused by actions the school takes or simply related to the population of students in the school. Successful K-12 STEM Education defines a framework for understanding "success" in K-12 STEM education. The book focuses its analysis on the science and mathematics parts of STEM and outlines criteria for identifying effective STEM schools and programs. Because a school's success should be defined by and measured relative to its goals, the book identifies three important goals that share certain elements, including learning STEM content and practices, developing positive dispositions toward STEM, and preparing students to be lifelong learners. A successful STEM program would increase the number of students who ultimately pursue advanced degrees and careers in STEM fields, enhance the STEM-capable workforce, and boost STEM literacy for all students. It is also critical to broaden the participation of women and minorities in STEM fields. Successful K-12 STEM Education examines the vast landscape of K-12 STEM education by considering different school models, highlighting research on effective STEM education practices, and identifying some conditions that promote and limit school- and student-level success in STEM. The book also looks at where further work is needed to develop appropriate data sources. The book will serve as a guide to policy makers; decision makers at the school and district levels; local, state, and federal government agencies; curriculum developers; educators; and parent and education advocacy groups.

Book Promoting the Sustainable Development Goals in North American Cities

Download or read book Promoting the Sustainable Development Goals in North American Cities written by David B. Abraham and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-05 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents North American best practices and perspectives on developing, managing and monitoring indicators to track development progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in local communities and cities. In 4 main sections, the book presents and frames the many ways in which community indicator programs are either integrating or retooling to integrate the SDGs into their existing frameworks, or how they are developing new programs to track and report progress on the SDGs. This is the first volume that focuses on SDG adoption within the context of North Americans cities and communities, and the unique issues and opportunities prevalent in these settings. The chapters are developed by experienced academics and practitioners of community planning and sustainable development, and will add broad perspective on public policy, organizational management, information management and data visualization. This volume presents a case-study approach to chapters, offering lessons that can be used by three main audiences: 1) teachers and researchers in areas of urban, regional, and environmental planning, urban development, and public policy; 2) professional planners, decision-makers, and urban managers; and 3) sustainability activists and interested groups.
