Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interference with protein-mediated intra- and intercellular pathways has become a major goal of preclinical and clinical research. A, rapidly increasing numBer of peptides are known to be responsible for endo-, para-and autocrine sig nal transduction. These peptides and their receptors have been studied with regard to their cell growth stimulatory ac tion and their impact on differentiation. In parallel, peptide antagonists are being investigated in terms of their potential role in preclinical and clinical application. Thus, biotherapy might improve the clinical outcome of patients with tumors that respond to the respective hormonal manipulation. Among the numerous peptides of interest somatostatin (somatotropin release inhibitory factor) and the luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LH-RH) have been the topic of intensive research during recent years. In this third vol ume of peptides in oncology, experts in the field exten sively review and update the mechanisms of action of so matostatin and LH -RH -analogues in oncology. Somatostatin and its various short-and long-acting ana logues have the unique feature of suppressing and inhibit ing a wide range of cellular processes including cell prolif eration. Receptors for these peptides which belong to the family of neuropeptides or neurotransmitters, are widely distributed, a feature which is not in keeping with the gen eral view of a growth hormone regulatory system. LH -RH analogues play an established role in curative (adjuvant) and palliative treatment of hormone sensitive tumors."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to privileged structures and their application in the discovery of new drugs The use of privileged structures is a viable strategy in the discovery of new medicines at the lead optimization stages of the drug discovery process. Privileged Structures in Drug Discovery offers a comprehensive text that reviews privileged structures from the point of view of medicinal chemistry and contains the synthetic routes to these structures. In this text, the author—a noted expert in the field—includes an historical perspective on the topic, presents a practical compendium to privileged structures, and offers an informed perspective on the future direction for the field. The book describes the up-to-date and state-of-the-art methods of organic synthesis that describe the use of privileged structures that are of most interest. Chapters included information on benzodiazepines, 1,4-dihydropyridines, biaryls, 4-(hetero)arylpiperidines, spiropiperidines, 2-aminopyrimidines, 2-aminothiazoles, 2-(hetero)arylindoles, tetrahydroisoquinolines, 2,2-dimethylbenzopyrans, hydroxamates, and bicyclic pyridines containing ring-junction nitrogen as privileged scaffolds in medicinal chemistry. Numerous, illustrative case studies document the current use of the privileged structures in the discovery of drugs. This important volume: Describes the drug compounds that have successfully made it to the marketplace and the chemistry associated with them Offers the experience from an author who has worked in many therapeutic areas of medicinal chemistry Details many of the recent developments in organic chemistry that prepare target molecules Includes a wealth of medicinal chemistry case studies that clearly illustrate the use of privileged structures Designed for use by industrial medicinal chemists and process chemists, academic organic and medicinal chemists, as well as chemistry students and faculty, Privileged Structures in Drug Discovery offers a current guide to organic synthesis methods to access the privileged structures of interest, and contains medicinal chemistry case studies that document their application.

Book Manual on Assisted Reproduction

Download or read book Manual on Assisted Reproduction written by Thomas Rabe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our knowledge of reproductive medicine has expanded rapidly since the birth of Louise Brown, the first baby to be conceived by in vitro fertilization, which was performed by Professors Steptoe and Ed wards in Bourn Hall, England, in 1978. Hardly a year goes by without the development of a new or the modification of an existing method of assisted reproduction. Within a relatively short period, in vitro fertilization has been introduced into the treatment of female infertility. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection has also created new opportunities for the treatment of male infertility. This manual takes stock of the techniques of assisted reproduc tion that are available today. Competent authors from various centers present, in a concise way, their tried-and-tested procedures, so that the latter can be readily implemented. Due to different legal regulations, the scope of assisted re production is much more limited in Germany than in many other countries. For example, whereas only three embryos may be con ceived and transferred in Germany, such restrictions do not exist in several other European countries and the United States. Further more, heterologous fertilization, oocyte donation, and surrogate motherhood are banned in Germany. We are glad to have been able to recruit many international ex perts to present the various fields of assisted reproduction from their perspective. We hope this book will help to establish the different therapies and achieve a wide distribution.
