Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gloucestershire Biographical Notes The writer's previous work Good and Great Men of Gloucestershire - has long been out of print, and copies of it are now rare. It has, therefore, been thought that the present volume may be rendered more complete and interesting if introduced by a summary of the contents of the former one. In attempting this, little can be done beyond an enumeration of the subjects of the several parts of which it consists, and a brief indication of the chief facts which are narrated. Book Gloucestershire Notes and Queries Vol 8 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Gloucestershire Notes and Queries Vol 8 Classic Reprint written by W. P. W. Phillimore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-22 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gloucestershire Notes and Queries, Vol. 8 The very detailed account of Gloucestershire Brasses, with its numerous illustrations, which Mr. C. T. Davis contributed, also forms an exceedingly useful addition to the literature of the county. The volume of Gloucestershire Marriage Registers is notable from the fact that from it has grown a series of printed parish registers of which volumes have now appeared for seven counties, and is extending into other counties, thus helping to solve the difficult question of the preservation of our ancient parish registers. A word of explanation is due to the subscribers on account of the delay in issuing the parts for June and September. They had been printed and only awaited the completion of part of the Supplement (church Notes) when a very disastrous fire occurred at the printers, in which all the printed sheets and illustrations were burnt. Serious as this was the energy of Mr. Madge, well Seconded by Messrs. W. J. Southwood and Co., have set matters right, and we have the satisfaction of seeing, for the first time in the magazine's history, a volume completed, index and title page included, before the end of the year. My reluctance to retire from the post as editor is lessened by the assurance that in my successor this magazine will have an editor under whom it is certain to advance in every way. What changes in the magazine are proposed I may leave to Mr. Madge to explain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes and Additions to the History of Gloucester: Second Series This letter is dated fourteen days before the departure from Boston of the eet engaged in the unfortunate expedition under Sir William Phips against Canada in 1690; and the presse from which Mr. Emerson so earnestly pleads for release, was, without doubt, for soldiers for that ex pedition. Let us see how completely facts justify the worthy pastor's intercession for his ock. In 1688 the town voted that every household er, and young man upwards of twenty-one years of age, that was born in town, and county, should have six acres of land. According to the record, every man who is known to have been then an inhabitant except ing two who were very poor, and one or two others who had just moved into town, received a grantof land. The number, excluding the minis ter and his son, appears to have been just one hundred, of whom, in 1690, several were dead. We may therefore make a liberal allowance for young men under twenty - one capable of bearing arms, and for so journers and others whose names had not yet got into the records, and still come to the conclusion that there could not have been in the town, in 1690, as many as ninety men fit for military duty. Moreover, the History shows (p. 214) that the number of persons assessed for a poll tax in 1693 was only seventy-eight. I know not that information can anywhere be obtained concerning the number of Gloucester men that actually joined this ill-fated expedition to Canada, but that it included a very large proportion of the young and able-bodied men of the town there can be no doubt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Robert Frampton, Bishop of Gloucester: Deprived as a Non-Juror 1689 This volume is an exact reproduction of the manu script memoir oi' Robert F rampton, which came into my possession about fifty years ago by purchase from Mr. George Counsel, a lawyer and antiquary of note, living in Gloucester. The ms. Had passed through the hands of Sir Charles Burrell, in a chest of drawers which had originally belonged to the Bishop. I give this name of Burrell from memory, with some un certainty both as to the name and the spelling; but of the genuineness of the biography there can be no doubt.
