Book Catalogue of the Fossil Plants of the Glossopteris Flora in the Department of Geology British Museum Natural History

Download or read book Catalogue of the Fossil Plants of the Glossopteris Flora in the Department of Geology British Museum Natural History written by E. A. Newell Arber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Fossil Plants of the Glossopteris Flora in the Department of Geology, British Museum (Natural History): Being a Monograph of the Permo-Carbonniferous Flora of India and the Southern Hemisphere IN this Catalogue I have made an attempt towards a complete summary of what is at present known on the subject of the Glossopteris Flora. It is hoped that reference will here be found to all the more important memoirs which have been published; a literature now not only large, but widely scattered. I have endeavoured to give some account of the less abundant, and consequently the less known species, in addition to the more characteristic types represented in the British Museum collection, and to revise, so far as possible, the older records in the light of our present knowledge. The task has not proved a light one. In many instances the rarer fossils are unrepresented in any European collection, and I have had to rely solely on the original descriptions and figures, both sometimes very inadequate, which have been published. I trust that, whatever imperfections this volume may be found to contain, it may be of use to those who are interested in the study of this ancient flora, especially to residents in our Greater Colonies of India, Australia, and South Africa, which at one time formed the principal provinces of a great southern continent, Gondwana land, whose flora is the subject of the present work. Book The Transantarctic Mountains

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gunter Faure
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2010-09-21
  • ISBN : 9048193907
  • Pages : 812 pages

Download or read book The Transantarctic Mountains written by Gunter Faure and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-21 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a summary of the geology of the Transantarctic Mountains for Earth scientists who may want to work there or who need an overview of the geologic history of this region. In addition, the properties of the East Antarctic ice sheet and of the meteorites that accumulate on its surface are treated in separate chapters. The presentation ends with the Cenozoic glaciation of the Transantarctic Mountains including the limnology and geochemical evolution of the saline lakes in the ice-free valleys. • The subject matter in this book is presented in chronological order starting about 750 million years ago and continuing to the present time. • The chapters can be read selectively because the introduction to each chapter identifies the context that gives relevance to the subject matter to be discussed. • The text is richly illustrated with 330 original line drawings as well as with 182 color maps and photographs. • The book contains indexes of both subject matter and of authors’ names that allow it to be used as an encyclopedia of the Transantarctic Mountains and of the East Antarctic ice sheet. • Most of the chapters are supplemented by Appendices containing data tables, additional explanations of certain phenomena (e.g., the formation and seasonal destruction of stratospheric ozone), and illustrative calculations (e.g., 38Cl dates of meteorites). • The authors have spent a combined total of fourteen field seasons between 1964 and 1995 doing geological research in the Transantarctic Mountains with logistical support by the US Antarctic Program. • Although Antarctica is remote and inaccessible, tens of thousands of scientists of many nationalities and their assistants have worked there and even larger numbers of investigators will work there in the future.

Book Faunal and Floral Migration and Evolution in SE Asia Australasia

Download or read book Faunal and Floral Migration and Evolution in SE Asia Australasia written by Ian Metcalfe and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-06-01 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multidisciplinary book focuses on the relationships and interactions between palaeobiogeography, biogeography, dispersal, vicariance, migrations and evolution of organisms in the SE Asia-Australasian region. The book investigates biogeographic links between SE Asia and Australasia which go back more than 500 million years. It also focuses on the links between geological evolution and biological migrations and evolution in the region. It was in the SE Asian region that Alfred Russell Wallace established his biogeographic line, now known as Wallace's Line, which was the beginning of biogeography. Wallace also independently developed his theory of evolution based on his work in this area.;The book brings together, for the first time, geologists, palaeontologists, zoologists, botanists, entomologists, evolutionary biologists and archaeologists, in the one volume, to relate the region's geological past to its present biological peculiarities. The book is organized into six sections. Section 1 Paleobiogeographic Background provides overviews of the geological and tectonic evolution of SE Asia-Australasia, and changing patterns of land and sea for the last 540 million years. Section 2 Palaeozoic and Mesozoic Geology and Biogeography discusses Palaeozoic and Mesozoic biogeography of conodonts, brachiopods, plants, dinosaurs and radiolarians and the recognition of ancient biogeographic boundaries or Wallace Lines in the region. Section 3 Wallace's Line focuses on the biogeographic boundary established by Wallace, including the history of its establishment, its significance to biogeography in general and its applicability in the context of modern biogeography.;Section 4 Plant biogeography and evolution includes discussion on primitive angiosperms, the diaspora of the southern rushes, and environmental, climatic and evolutionary implications of plants and palynomorphs in the region. The biogeography and migration of insects, butterflies, birds, rodents and other non-primate mammals is discussed in section 5, Non Primates. The final section 6 Primates focuses on the biogeographic radiation, migration and evolution of primates and includes papers on the occurrence and migration of early hominids and the requirements for human colonization of Australia.

Book excerpt: Antarctic Paleobiology discusses the current status of paleobiology, principally paleobotany and palynology in Antarctica, and the interrelationship of Antarctic floras to those of other Gondwana continents. It provides a broad coverage of the major groups of plants on the one hand, while on the other seeking to evaluate the vegetational history and the physical and biological parameters that influence the distribution of floras through time and space. The biologic activity is discussed within a framework of the geologic history, including the tectonic and paleogeographic history of the region. Finally, the reader will find a comprehensive bibliography of Gondwana paleobotany and palynology.
