Book The Old San Gabriel Mission

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old San Gabriel Mission: Historical Notes Taken From Old Manuscripts and Records, Accurately Compiled After Diligent Research, With Mention of the Other California Franciscan Missions and Their Founders This is a glorious year for old San Gabriel, long to be remembered. The year 1921 marks the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the foundation of San Gabriel Mission. One hundred and fifty years ago the brown-robed Sons of St. Francis came here not in quest of gold but to conquer for Christ the souls of the natives given up to pagan practices and lost to God. A band of these Missionaries, led by the Saintly Father Junipero Serra, in their excursions across the land halted here and being most favorably impressed by the beauty of the spot, selected it as the center of their future apostolic activities. Here they erected our peerless Mission; here they planted the Cross of Christ and started with undaunted zeal the arduous task of converting the Indians to Christianity. What labors, what amount of suffering they had to undergo in this superhuman enterprise it is hard to describe. Living in an age of refinement and comfort with every faculty at our command to satisfy the most fastidious taste, we cannot properly picture to ourselves the extent of self-sacrifice involved in the conquest of the savage to religion, especially at a time when civilization had made little or no inroads into this part of the New World. There is one, however, who did fully measure the extent of their hardships; it is the Divine Master whom they so faithfully served and followed. They have long since gone to their reward but the fragrance of their holy examples we still perceive; they are here no more, but their generous sacrifices are left behind for us to admire, and their splendid virtues for us to emulate. Their bodies rest somewhere in this land of perennial sunshine, but the fruits of their labor, their wondrous achievements, survive them. No, not all is gone with their passing out of this earth. Their mighty deeds speak to us even after their death. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gabriel García Márquez’s novel One Hundred Years of Solitude seemed destined for obscurity upon its publication in 1967. The little-known author, small publisher, magical style, and setting in a remote Caribbean village were hardly the usual ingredients for success in the literary marketplace. Yet today it ranks among the best-selling books of all time. Translated into dozens of languages, it continues to enter the lives of new readers around the world. How did One Hundred Years of Solitude achieve this unlikely success? And what does its trajectory tell us about how a work of art becomes a classic? Ascent to Glory is a groundbreaking study of One Hundred Years of Solitude, from the moment García Márquez first had the idea for the novel to its global consecration. Using new documents from the author’s archives, Álvaro Santana-Acuña shows how García Márquez wrote the novel, going beyond the many legends that surround it. He unveils the literary ideas and networks that made possible the book’s creation and initial success. Santana-Acuña then follows this novel’s path in more than seventy countries on five continents and explains how thousands of people and organizations have helped it to become a global classic. Shedding new light on the novel’s imagination, production, and reception, Ascent to Glory is an eye-opening book for cultural sociologists and literary historians as well as for fans of García Márquez and One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Draw Us after Thee was lovingly compiled in the hopes of helping us to remember these urgent realities. This collection organizes together many of the beautiful practices which Catholic could reap so many spiritual rewards from, whether for the merit of their own souls or for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, and in a way that is simple and manageable, even to those with very busy lives. Book The California Native Landscape

Download or read book The California Native Landscape written by Greg Rubin and published by Timber Press. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water shortages and water rationing are commonplace throughout California, rendering expanses of lawn and thirsty, nonnative plants unsustainable. The California Native Landscape addresses both concerns by showing homeowners how to succeed with natives and showing them how lush, colorful, and thriving their landscape can be. The authors stress the importance of smart garden design and combining the right plants to promote the natural symbiosis that occurs within plant communities. Native plants also play an important role in creating fire-resistant landscapes, and this new book has cutting-edge information on this crucial topic, refuting the myth that natives are more fire-prone than nonnatives. With its unique combination of proven techniques, environmental wisdom, and inspiring design advice, this is an essential resource for all California gardeners who want to create a beautiful, ecologically appropriate, and resource-conserving home landscape.
