Download or read book Just a Guy written by William L Horton and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-05-30 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My dad, Lew Horton, always had a place to do woodworking. After he retired from Penneys he rented places in Lincoln, Illinois to store his stuff and work on projects. I helped him to move his shop twice-- a hard, dirty job. On one move an older fellow helped, probably because he had a pickup and Dad was using part of an old chicken shed on the guys property for his new work space. I didnt know the man, and when I asked Dad about him Dad explained, Hes just a guy, meaning, I suppose, that he was no one special and that Dad did not know him well. That phrase stuck in my mind for years, for some reason. Most of us are just guys, unworthy and unknown and forgotten in, at most, a generation. We are the common folk. But all of us guys really have some memories stored away that we dredge up for pleasure, contemplation, regret, analysis, and entertainment, and often they pop into my head as part of an unrelated chain of memories caused by something unknown. Some are triggered by events, others just come. I thought it would be nice to share them with someone else whether or not they wanted to know them. Perhaps this memoir will give some future historian or descendant a feel for how it was to be just a guy during my years on earth.

Book excerpt: “Karl, its not what you think, he raped me.” Would these words destroy the amazing career of a genius Hispanic economist known as John Carver, formerly named Julio Heinrich Romero? Would Gloria, who would never imagine that she would have to go through with an entire rape trial, ever come clean and admit she lied? Would a prosecutor, who learns half way into the case that there are some major discrepancies between what Gloria says and what actually happened, choose to go to the side of truth, or the side of winning at all costs? And would an American jury ever believe in a million years that a woman would lie about a charge of rape, and that a prosecutor would knowingly put on a fraudulent case? The Nobel Prizener is a story of American courtroom injustice, and of an unstoppable genius that continued in his path the save the world.

Book excerpt: The voice of the book is reflective of the author and the life handed her, the values she learned to cherish and take with her through her journey. She learned to make the most of life's situations relying on her sense of humor to cope. Through the disappointments and failures, she recognized her weaknesses and turned to her faith to get her through. She attributes her courage of character, strength, and wisdom to a deep faith and trust in God. She bares her soul and becomes an open book such that you will find yourself laughing and crying, and oft times identifying with life as she lived it. Her ability to accept life "as is" and to find a comforting blend of laughter and sadness is one of the main threads throughout the book. The sharing of her life is unique and entertaining.

Book excerpt: The Ghost -- the code name for the secret member of an undercover cop's backup team. It is the Ghost's job to remain hidden, blending into the scenery, maintaining close observation of his assignment's surroundings. In short, he's supposed to keep the undercover cop alive. The Ghost's relationship with his undercover cop is unrivaled in its intensity. But every relationship has unpredictable turns, and in Marc Olden's The Ghost, undercover cop Rosalind "Ross" Magellan's relationship with her Ghost is no different. Magellan, impulsive, seductive, and an expert at the art of deceit and manipulation, is addicted to the rush of leading a double life; she has posed as a prostitute and a junkie to uncover dealers and sleazy players associated with New York City's underground night culture. Roaming desolate streets, abandoned buildings, and after-hours clubs without a police radio, badge, or vest, and often without a gun, her character reveals the true underbelly of New York City. In the tradition of Ed McBain and Elmore Leonard, Marc Olden's fastidious attention to nuance and the inner workings of the police reveals the work of a master crime writer. Mined with murder, blackmail, drugs, and betrayal, The Ghost is a story that will stay with readers forever.
Download or read book Spider Bones written by Kathy Reichs and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-08-24 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don’t miss this “whopper” (Publishers Weekly) of a thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs in her “cleverly plotted” (The New York Times) Temperance Brennan series, the inspiration for the hit FOX television series Bones. John Lowery was declared dead in 1968—the victim of a Huey crash in Vietnam, his body buried long ago in North Carolina. Four decades later, Temperance Brennan is called to the scene of a drowning in Hemmingford, Quebec. The victim appears to have died while in the midst of a bizarre sexual practice. The corpse is later identified as John Lowery. But how could Lowery have died twice, and how did an American soldier end up in Canada? Tempe sets off for the answer, exhuming Lowery’s grave in North Carolina and taking the remains to Hawaii for reanalysis—to the headquarters of JPAC, the US military’s Joint POW/ MIA Accounting Command, which strives to recover Americans who have died in past conflicts. In Hawaii, Tempe is joined by her colleague and ex-lover Detective Andrew Ryan (how “ex” is he?) and by her daughter, who is recovering from her own tragic loss. Soon another set of remains is located, with Lowery’s dog tags tangled among them. Three bodies—all identified as Lowery. And then Tempe is contacted by Hadley Perry, Honolulu’s flamboyant medical examiner, who needs help identifying the remains of an adolescent boy found offshore. Was he the victim of a shark attack? Or something much more sinister?
Download or read book Destiny written by Rowan Knight and published by 22 Lions. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the main protagonist of the story. You asked me to write a book about our relationship, which I didn’t want but ended up doing based on your persistence and insistence on it. However, you probably didn’t realize that you were asking me to write as well a reality-based story, not a fairytale or a fiction novel. And well, here it is, what you truly asked for. I wrote the whole truth, from when I fell in love with you until what happened later between us. As a matter of fact, to be as honest and precise as anyone can get, I decided to add many of our conversations, and actually chose at some point to talk to you online many times on purpose, to copy-paste exactly what we said to one another. So here it is, the real you and the real me, for all the eternity of mankind to know. And also because I have nothing to hide about myself. There are over 300 books describing my personal life and my personality, including self-biographies. You are the one that always assumed that the truth and what you think about yourself is the same thing. Well, it is not. Love is not blind. Or maybe it is and there was no love between us. I will surely not put much more of my thoughts about it anymore into analyzing exactly the causes behind our relationship. I’ve analyzed everything as any researcher would, confirmed my results with parallel analysis on the fields of Psychology, Psychiatry and Scientology, and made my judgments as accurate as possible. Because I do love you, I loved you, and I will always love you, but I love myself too. And above everything, I love the truth, and I love a real and true story. So, thank you for that, for giving me a whole story about the truth regarding being in love with someone like you, for suggesting and insisting on this book, which will hopefully enlighten many to seek happiness beyond the turbulences of insanity and disrespect that I’ve felt and found myself doing again unto another being. I hoped and still do, that one day you can read this whole book and realize how our relationship can or could be wonderful. It is, at this point, still in your hands. The facts about our past, however, remain in memory and now in words too.

In a twist of fate that might seem hilarious if it happened to someone else, he was now my stepson." Mother's Day: Mahina State University's powerful fundraising office tasks Professor Molly with a special assignment: To serve as the personal tutierge (that's tutor-concierge) to Jeremy Brigham, whose mother happens to be fabulously wealthy and gravely ill. Molly is not thrilled at having to babysit a spoiled rich kid. Especially not while she's battling morning sickness, a meddling mom, and (as always) the Student Retention Office. But once inside the historic Brigham House, Molly realizes something is very wrong. And she has to decide whether to mind her own business and keep her job, or risk everything to prevent a murder. The Nakamura Letters: Professor Emma Nakamura doesn't believe in ghosts. So it doesn't bother her (much) when she learns of a long-ago suicide in her remote upcountry rental house. She's sure there's a logical explanation for the disappearing items and the strange sounds in the night. Fortunately (?), Emma's best friend Molly has news shocking enough to take Emma's mind off the hauntings. Now Emma and Molly have to rely on their strong reasoning skills and a weak internet connection to figure out how a body ended up in Molly's backyard. The Nakamura Letters is an island-style take on the Golden Age mysteries of Mary Roberts Rinehart and Agatha Christie. The Perfect Body: When Professor Molly attends Mahina State University's exclusive donor dinner, she doesn't expect to share a table with the insufferable Stephen Park. Turns out it's one thing to invite your toxic ex-boyfriend to drop dead...it's quite another when he takes you up on it. The Fever Cabinet: Through no fault of her own, Professor Molly just got promoted to department chair. The Student Retention Office has her buried in paperwork. The college has just relocated to a former asylum, which is undergoing noisy renovations. Molly's dean has directed her to mentor the department's new star, the prickly Fiona Spencer, and to do whatever it takes to keep Fiona happy. At least nothing else can go wrong. And then Fiona finds a body in her office. The Influencer: There's no such thing as bad publicity. Until it happens to you. Professor Molly's new renter is a social media star seeking privacy in remote Mahina, Hawaii. The arrangement seems to be working out--until the celebrity influencer vanishes. Molly and her best friend Emma Nakamura call in the Mahina PD and try to stay out of the way. But the unthinkable happens—the saturnine Detective Medeiros actually asks for Molly and Emma's help. As they confront nosy neighbors, fanatical followers, and the missing woman's has-been husband, Molly and Emma find themselves at the center of the story. And when fame creates its own reality, that's a dangerous place to be. EXCLUSVE BONUS CONTENT: Death at the Effigy It's 1984. Young Pat Flanagan gets his first reporting job at San Diego's second-coolest 'zine, Voltaire's Quill. But when Pat covers the opening night of a trendy new club, he witnesses a freak "accident" and has to choose: keep his eccentric editor Harriet and her advertisers happy, or find out the truth?
