Book The Criminology of Edwin Sutherland

Download or read book The Criminology of Edwin Sutherland written by Mark S. Gaylord and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-14 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edwin Sutherland is the acknowledged father of American criminology. This is the first full-length analysis of his work and his person. Unlike the European schools of criminology, which sought to locate deviant behaviour within the deep structures of the economy, Sutherland eschewed such explanations in favour of proximate and observable causes. He located the sources of crime in the association and interaction of specific groups of people. For Sutherland, crime as a way of life results from an individual's attachment to criminals for whom criminal acts are a measure of success no less than a way of life. In a series of publications, Sutherland expanded the horizons of the classic "Chicago School" of interactionists, and in the process founded criminology as a separate area of research while locating it firmly within sociology. As the authors show, Sutherland's work was inspired by strong moral concerns and a sense of the needs of society for social order without falling prey to either blaming the victim or pandering to sentiment about the joys of criminal life. In this sense, he is a model of the sociological tradition long deserving of the biography acknowledging his role as a master and pioneer. Yet Gaylord and Galliher have written more than an intellectual biography. They take seriously the need to fit Sutherland and his "theory of differential association" into a social and historical context. They are also aware and critically straightforward about the limitations of Sutherland's work in criminology, but place both his achievements and their limitations in a fully developed analytical context.

Book Thinking about Movies

Download or read book Thinking about Movies written by Peter Lehman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete introduction to analyzing and enjoying a wide variety of movies, for film students and movie lovers alike Thinking About Movies: Watching, Questioning, Enjoying, Fourth Edition is a thorough overview of movie analysis designed to enlighten both students and enthusiasts, and heighten their enjoyment of films. Readers will delve into the process of thinking about movies critically and analytically, and find how doing so can greatly enhance the pleasure of watching movies. Divided roughly into two parts, the book addresses film studies within the context of the dynamics of cinema, before moving on to a broader analysis of the relationship of films to the larger social, cultural, and industrial issues informing them. This updated fourth edition includes an entirely new section devoted to a complete analysis of the film adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, along with many in-depth discussions of important films such as Citizen Kane and Silence of the Lambs. The chapter on television integrates a major expansion distinguishing between television in the digital era of the convergence of the entertainment and technology industries in comparison to the era of broadcast analogue television. The final chapter places film within the current context of digital culture, globalization, and the powerful rise of China in film production and exhibition. The authors clearly present various methodologies for analyzing movies and illustrate them with detailed examples and images from a wide range of films from cult classics to big-budget, award-winning movies. This helps viewers see new things in movies and also better understand and explain why they like some better than others. Thinking About Movies: Watching, Questioning, Enjoying, Fourth Edition is ideal for film students immersed in the study of this important, contemporary medium and art form as well as students and readers who have never taken a class on cinema before. This new edition of the book also comes with a Companion Blog https://thinkingaboutmoviesblog.wordpress.com/ that the authors will update regularly with attention to films and industry developments directly related to each chapter, plus updates to readings and resources.

Book excerpt: Wolfgang Laib's breathtaking and quietly beautiful artwork draws on the ritual life he leads in and with nature and its processes of becoming and forgetting. His works are composed of purely natural materials, collected and processed by the artist himself in the 70s, he created his first milk stone, and then moved on to sifting pollen into "color miracles" or piling it into "insurmountable mountains"; in the 80s, he began to incorporate rice into his pieces; and towards the end of the decade he began working in beeswax. This gorgeous retrospective of his work -- with texts by Klaus Ottman and Margit Rowell, and interview between the artist and Harold Szeeman -- offers us a key to fully appreciating his complex and transcendent body of work.
