Cultural Identity and Its Meaning What makes a group of people cohesive is their shared cultural identity, which includes their shared values, beliefs, traditions, language, and rituals. It's the stuff on which a person's sense of identity and community are built. Interactions with different cultures, historical events, and social shifts all have a role in how an individual's sense of cultural identity develops over time. Globalization's Effect on Sense of Belonging Globalization has been blamed for fostering cultural homogenization, in which distinct cultural behaviors are diminished in favor of more mainstream global fashions. In particular, the spread of Western values and practices over the world, known as "Westernization," is frequently used to illustrate this point. Cultural diversity, however, can now be better appreciated and protected thanks to globalization. The prominence afforded by global platforms helps underrepresented cultures claim their identities and celebrate their traditions. Hybridization of Cultures: Globalization stimulates the fusion of cultural elements, leading to the formation of hybrid cultures. When many cultural traditions collide, novel and ever-evolving forms of expression are born. Hybrid cultures demonstrate the resilience of civilizations in the face of globalization and cast doubt on long-held beliefs about cultural purity. Language and Communication: Language, a fundamental component of cultural identity, undergoes transformation owing to globalization. Many indigenous tongues are dying out since English has become the international language of communication. The importance of linguistic diversity in preserving cultural identity has prompted a resurgence in the fight to protect native tongues and dialects. Concerns regarding cultural appropriation arise as a result of globalization. Cultural appropriation occurs when aspects of one culture are copied or imitated by another, usually to the detriment of the original culture's meaning. In today's increasingly interconnected world, it's more important than ever to find a middle ground between embracing variety and protecting tradition.

How can societies attempt to manage globalization and become developed while maintaining a viable national identity? In a study of three globalizing states and cities in post-Soviet Eurasia - Russia (Astrakhan), Kazakhstan (Almaty), and Azerbaijan (Baku) - Douglas W. Blum provides an empirical examination of national identity formation, exploring how cultures, particularly youth cultures, have been affected by global forces. Blum argues that social discourse regarding youth cultural trends - coupled with official and non-official approaches to youth policy - complement patterns of state-society relations and modes of response to globalization. His findings show that the nations studied have embraced certain aspects of modernity and liberalism, while rejecting others, but have also reasserted the place of national traditions.

With this development and the advance of technology, media and communication have had the ability to reach regions of the world, which may have never been exposed to other cultures in the past. Undoubtedly, this has had an impact on the culture and societal norms of countless cultures as dominant world cultures expand their realm of influence through such media as TV programs and the internet. This report will examine to what extent dominant world cultures’ impacts are on what will be termed ‘traditional cultures’ – a unique culture, which up until recently has been relatively unaware of and influenced by other outside cultures. Furthermore, it will examine whether this trend of globalization will advance the creation of a singular global culture. The debate of whether the erosion between traditional culture and the strengthening of a global culture is of particular concern as within recent history many groups, who are often termed minorities to the more dominant cultures, are concerned with the loss of their individuality, way of life, and even their national sovereignty. To pro or hyper-globalists, this loss of sovereignty is viewed as progress as the process of cultural homogenization will inevitably be responsible for the decay of conflict among differing cultural groups. However, to the ‘minorities’ or traditional cultures opposed to this form of cultural transformation, this theory poses a threat to their unique values and it is not likely that traditional cultures will likely submit to the notion that a growing global culture is an unavoidable fact.
