The port sector in several developing countries has been undergoing revolutionary transformation from a subsistence infrastructure resource into a more capital intensive, commercially oriented facility during the last two decades. In India, awareness towards the impact of port infrastructure on economic development in general and international trade in particular has increased in recent years partly as a result of rising trade transportation costs. One of the objectives of this book is therefore to understand the role the port plays in India's economic development. The book tries to quantitatively evaluate the structural metamorphosis in Indian port sector. The main emphasis of the book is on performance evaluation, technological change, total factor productivity growth, market concentration, and competitiveness of Indian ports for the last two and a half decades. However, there are large parts of the underdeveloped regions that suffer from endemic underdevelopment. The north-eastern region is one such region. The relevance of Globalisation in the context of the North-Eastern Region of India has additional implications in terms of social and political integration. The most important characteristic of the north-eastern region is that all the constituent units (states) are relatively closed ethnic groups. All the states in the region share porous international border. Consequently, both product and factor markets in these states have some international dimension. Given the socioeconomic and geopolitical dimensions in the region, the prevailing pattern of development in these states has also culminated in the form of social unrest and degradation of economic values. This clearly implies that the development policies and programmes have fallen short of meeting the social and economic aspirations of the indigenous population in the region. In this context, the question that arises is how the forces of Globalization and economic growth could be combined together to address the implicit and most relevant questions associated with migration, unemployment and development of trading activities in the perspective of North-Eastern Region of India.

Globalization in India meant shedding its inhibitions about the world market and foreign investments. India had opened its market to the select few but with increase in the opportunities in the world market it was forced to open itself to more competition and greater opportunities. It also meant allowing the foreign investors to invest in the infrastructure industries. The infrastructure industries are electricity, coal, finished steel, cement, Crude petroleum, refined petroleum products, telecom, oil and gas, roads & bridges, aviation, railways, urban infrastructure, housing, power, ports & shipping, transportation, railways, water etc., these industries were earlier dominated by the public sectors. To encourage foreign funds flow into the Infrastructure in India, the Indian Finance Ministry has allowed Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) also to invest in unlisted companies. FIIs now can invest 100 per cent of their funds in the Infrastructure in India. In order to make the core sector more attractive for FDI, the Cabinet Committee on Foreign Investment (CCFI) has modified the 49 percent cap on foreign equity in the infrastructure sector to make fund mobilization easier. This major policy decision which will indirectly raise the foreign equity investment in infrastructure sector to well over 51 per cent. Therefore the paper will try to analyze the foreign direct investment scenario in India after 17 years of globalization policy. The purpose of the study is to see the FDI investment at the infrastructural level, the methodology used is intensive research through the secondary data from the RBI manuals and Fact Sheets, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Government of India . I conclude that at a time like this when the world is facing the recession and India is also not left out from the global recession effects the Indian government needs to lure the Foreign investors with more flexible policies and foster environment for the FDI investments in the infrastructural sectors which would build India as an leading economy.

Book excerpt: The movement of people from small towns and villages of India to places outside the country raises a number of questions– about the networks that enable their mobility, the aspirations that motivate them, what they give back to their home regions, and how their provincial home worlds engage with and absorb the consequent transnational flows of money, ideas, influence and care. This book analyzes the social consequences of the transmission of migrant resources to provincial places in India. Bringing together case studies from four regions, it demonstrates that these flows are very diverse, are inflected by regional histories of mobility and development, and may reinforce local power structures or instigate social change in unexpected ways. The chapters collected in this volume examine conflicts over migrant-funded education or rural development projects, how migrants from Dalit, Muslim and other marginalized groups use their new wealth to promote social progress or equality in their home regions, and why migrants invest in property in provincial India or return regularly to their ancestral homes to revitalize ritual traditions. These studies also demonstrate that diaspora philanthropy is routed largely through social networks based on caste, community or kinship ties, thereby extending them spatially, and illustrate how migrant efforts to ‘develop’ their home regions may become entangled in local politics or influence state policies. This collection of eight original ethnographic field studies develops new theoretical insights into the diverse outcomes of international migration and the influences of regional diasporas within India. These collected studies illustrate the various ways in which migrants remain socially, economical and politically influential in their home regions. The book develops a fresh perspective on the connections between transnational migration and processes of development, revealing how provincial India has become deeply globalized. It will be of interest to academics and students in the fields of anthropology, geography, transnational and diaspora studies, and South Asian studies.
