The estimated global area of transgenic or GM crops for 2002 is 58.7 million hectares, grown by between 5.5 and 6.0 million farmers in 16 countries, up from approximately 5 million farmers and 13 countries in 2001. The increase in area between 2001 and 2002 is 12%, equivalent to 6.1 million hectares or 15 million acres.

Genetically Engineered Crops builds on previous related Academies reports published between 1987 and 2010 by undertaking a retrospective examination of the purported positive and adverse effects of GE crops and to anticipate what emerging genetic-engineering technologies hold for the future.
