Book Who s Going Green and Why Trends and Determinants of Green Investment

Download or read book Who s Going Green and Why Trends and Determinants of Green Investment written by Luc Eyraud and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper fills a gap in the macroeconomic literature on renewable sources of energy. It offers a definition of green investment and analyzes the trends and determinants of this investment over the last decade for 35 advanced and emerging countries. We use a new multi-country historical dataset and find that green investment has become a key driver of the energy sector and that its rapid growth is now mostly driven by China. Our econometric results suggest that green investment is boosted by economic growth, a sound financial system conducive to low interest rates, and high fuel prices. We also find that some policy interventions, such as the introduction of carbon pricing schemes, or "feed-in-tariffs," which require use of "green" energy, have a positive and significant impact on green investment. Other interventions, such as biofuel support, do not appear to be associated with higher green investment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Energy Investment 2018 provides a critical benchmark for decision making by governments, the energy industry, and financial institutions to set policy frameworks, implement business strategies, finance new projects, and develop new technologies. It highlights the ways in which investment decisions taken today are determining how energy supply and demand will unfold tomorrow. The report looks at critical questions that have shaped the energy industry, including: (i) Which countries and policies attracted the most energy investment in 2017, and what fuels and technologies are growing fastest?; (ii) Is energy investment sufficient and targeted appropriately to realise the world's energy transition objectives?; (iii) How are oil and gas companies responding to higher oil prices? Are they changing their strategy decisions in order to ensure adequate supplies while minimising long-term risks?; (iv) *How is the business model for US shale evolving? Is the rapid growth of production in 2018 still largely based on continuous overspending or is the industry finally moving towards financial sustainability?; (v) Are business models and financing approaches supporting a shift in power generation investments towards renewables? How are regulators around the world shaping enabling investments in power system networks and flexibility?; (vi) What policy and market factors drive energy efficiency spending? What new approaches to financing are emerging for efficient goods and services?; (vii) How are the sources of energy finance evolving? What roles are public financial institutions and utilities playing? How are decision makers addressing investment risks in India and other emerging economies?; (Viii) What are governments and the energy sector spending on energy research and development? What are the main considerations facing investors in batteries and the electric vehicle value chain; carbon capture, utilisation and storage; and hydrogen?

Book Global Landscape of Renewable Energy Finance 2023

Download or read book Global Landscape of Renewable Energy Finance 2023 written by and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global investment in energy transition technologies, including energy efficiency, reached a record high of USD 1.3 trillion in 2022. However, annual investments need to at least quadruple to remain on track to achieve the 1.5°C Scenario in IRENA's World Energy Transitions Outlook 2023. Investment in renewable energy was also unprecedented - at USD 0.5 trillion - but represented less than one third of the average investment needed each year. Investments are also not flowing at the pace or scale needed to accelerate progress towards universal energy access; investments in off-grid renewable energy solutions in 2021 - at USD 0.5 billion - fell far short of the USD 2.3 billion needed annually in off-grid solar products alone (not including mini-grids). This Third Edition of the biannual joint report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) analyses investment trends by technology, sector, region, source of finance and financial instrument in the period 2013-2020 and provides preliminary data for 2021-2022.

Book Independent Power Projects in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Independent Power Projects in Sub Saharan Africa written by Anton Eberhard and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inadequate electricity services pose a major impediment to reducing extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity in Sub-Saharan Africa. Simply put, Africa does not have enough power. Despite the abundant low-carbon and low-cost energy resources available to Sub-Saharan Africa, the region s entire installed electricity capacity, at a little over 80 GW, is equivalent to that of the Republic of Korea. Looking ahead, Sub-Saharan Africa will need to ramp-up its power generation capacity substantially. The investment needed to meet this goal largely exceeds African countries already stretched public finances. Increasing private investment is critical to help expand and improve electricity supply. Historically, most private sector finance has been channeled through privately financed independent power projects (IPP), supported by nonrecourse or limited recourse loans, with long-term power purchase agreements with the state utility or another off-taker. Between 1990 and 2014, IPPs have spread across Sub-Saharan Africa and are now present in 17 countries. Currently, there are 125 IPPs, with an overall installed capacity of 10.7 GW and investments of $24.6 billion. However, private investment could be much greater and less concentrated. South Africa alone accounts for 67 IPPs, 4.3 GW of capacity and $14.4 billion of investments; the remaining projects are concentrated in a handful of countries. The objective of this study is to evaluate the experience of IPPs and identify lessons that can help African countries attract more and better private investment. At the core of this analysis is a reflection on whether IPPs have in fact benefited Sub-Saharan Africa, and how they might be improved. The analysis is based primarily on in depth case studies, carried out in five countries, including Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda, which not only have the most numerous but also among the most extensive experience with IPPs.

Book Renewable Energy Finance

Download or read book Renewable Energy Finance written by Charles W. Donovan and published by Wspc (Europe). This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will give readers a unique insiders' perspective on how renewable energy deals actually get done. Renewable Energy Finance (Second Edition) describes in rich detail current best practices and evolving trends in clean energy investing. With contributions by some of the world's leading experts in energy finance, the book documents how investors are spending over $300 billion each year on financing renewable energy and positioning themselves in a growing global investment market. This second edition documents, with practical examples, the ways in which investors have funded over $2.6 trillion in solar, wind, and other renewable energy projects over the past decade. The book will be a go-to reference manual for understanding the factors that shape risk and return in renewable energy, the world's fastest growing industrial sector. Renewable Energy Finance (Second Edition) is suitable for executives new to the field, as well as advanced business students. This new edition will fill an important vacuum in the published book market. Despite exploding interest in renewable energy investing amongst corporate managers, government policymakers, and advanced business students, there is no text in the market that provides an insider's perspective on how large-scale renewable energy projects are funded. Over the last 10 years, many books about renewable energy have been written from an engineering perspective, focusing on technical aspects of clean energy technologies. Books written from a finance & economics perspective have dealt with renewable energy as a sub-set of the energy market or infrastructure financing more generally. Titles in the mass market have focused almost exclusively on investing in shares of renewable energy companies, not renewable energy power projects. Renewable Energy Finance (Second Edition) bridges these gaps by serving an audience of industry professionals and finance scholars with insights and analysis from leading investors putting their firms' money to work in utility-scale renewable energy projects. Essays collected in the book describe project financing vehicles for a range of renewable energy technologies including solar photovoltaic power plants, offshore wind farms, and bio-fuel refineries, as well as financing practices in a diverse set of countries.

Book Sustainable Energy Investment

Download or read book Sustainable Energy Investment written by Joseph Nyangon and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-03-10 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the technical, market, and policy innovations for unlocking sustainable investment in the energy sector. While finalizing this book, the COVID-19 pandemic is cutting a devastating swath through the global economy, causing the biggest fall in energy sector investment, exacerbating the global trade finance gap, worsening signs of growing income inequality, and devastating the health and livelihoods of millions. What is the parallel between the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate change crisis? The impacts of the global pandemic are expected to last for a few years, whereas those associated with the climate crisis will play out over several decades with potentially irreversible consequences. However, both show that the cost of inaction or delay in addressing the risks can lead to devastating outcomes or a greater probability of irreversible, catastrophic damages. In the context of sustainable energy investment and the transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy, what ways can financial markets and institutions support net-zero-emission activities and the shift to a sustainable economy, including investment in energy efficiency, low-carbon and renewable energy technologies? This book provides students, policymakers, and energy investment professionals with the knowledge and theoretical tools necessary to address related questions in sustainable energy investment, risk management, and energy innovation agendas.
