Book Trends in Container Shipping

Download or read book Trends in Container Shipping written by Manfred Zachcial and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of the Liner Shipping Conferences in the eighties, the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics organised again a Maritime Conference in Bremen. The aim of the conference in December 2008 was to analyse and to forecast the trends and perspectives of the international container shipping market. The international shipping industry and the global container shipping market have recently seen some of the most successful years in history. Excellent employment and high charter rates initiated a very strong order boom, especially in the highest size classes of 8.000 TEU to 12.000 TEU vessels and beyond. This development of accelerated fleet expansion met a cooling down period in global economy as a consequence of the worldwide financial crisis. The implications for the international trade markets have also affected the shipping industry and the container shipping market. Against this background the main topics of the Maritime Conference 2008 were: World economy, trade and shipping; vessel size development and its implications; implications of market growth on ports and hinterland; financing and taxation aspects.

Book Port Investment and Container Shipping Markets

Download or read book Port Investment and Container Shipping Markets written by Oecd and published by . This book was released on 2015-05-25 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large-scale port projects have irreversible effects on land use and multiple impacts on the local economy and local community. They affect the way that the regional and national economy operates as a whole, with major impacts on regional transport systems. Port planners make better decisions when these broad impacts are examined as part of the development of a national freight transport and logistics strategy. Private investment in port terminals is also facilitated by the certainty engendered by development of a national freight transport and logistics strategy. This report examines the issues that need to be considered before the decision to proceed to costly expansions with long-life spans and a structural influence on the local and national economy. The report benefits from a case study of Chile, where plans for a major expansion of port capacity in the central part of the country are well advanced. Chile provides the detail for an examination of factors critical to decisions on container port investments anywhere: demand forecasts, change in liner shipping markets, hinterland transport capacity, competition between container terminals, and the framework for financing of investment.

Book excerpt: In April 1956, a refitted oil tanker carried fifty-eight shipping containers from Newark to Houston. From that modest beginning, container shipping developed into a huge industry that reshaped manufacturing. But the container didn't just happen. Its adoption required huge sums of money, years of high-stakes bargaining, and delicate negotiation on standards. Now with a new chapter, The Box tells the dramatic story of how the drive and imagination of an iconoclastic entrepreneur turned containerization from an impractical idea into a phenomenon that transformed economic geography, slashed transportation costs, and made the boom in global trade possible. -- from back cover.

Book Container Logistics

Download or read book Container Logistics written by Rolf Neise and published by Kogan Page Publishers. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst the maritime container business has been studied in depth, the impact on shippers and how shippers deal with the given challenges has not been fully examined. Container Logistics bridges this gap and looks at the maritime business from a customer's perspective. The book examines the challenges, solutions and the latest developments in the container industry as well as the interaction between the different actors involved, such as freight forwarders, supply chain managers and shippers. Current hot topics from the supply chain and the maritime business perspective are included. From the supply chain perspective, Container Logistics covers areas such as the purchase of transportation services from ocean carriers and transport management, to effective and efficient logistics execution. From the maritime business perspective, the book covers topics such as intermodal freight optimisation and hinterland transportation, and terminal and port optimisation. With the inclusion of clear examples of best practice and bona fide case studies, as well as invaluable contributions from an international team of experts, Container Logistics is an essential guide for supply chain managers and shippers, as well as academics and industry professionals working in the maritime business. Online supporting resources include images from the book and chapter summaries.
