Book Global Citizen Patriots

Download or read book Global Citizen Patriots written by Mac Regan and published by Bookbaby. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Citizen Patriots examines the current state of the American system of constitutional values, democracy and capitalism. After four years of study, the author concludes that our system is badly in need of reform and change. In fact, most Americans sense that change is needed. However, legislative corruption and citizen disengagement have allowed partisan groups and well funded special interests to block progress. If the United States is to secure its future and act as a globally positive influence, both government representatives and citizens need to do their jobs. This book catalogues the root causes of representative and citizen dysfunction. Failure to address these problems diminishes our democracy and promotes crony capitalism. These outcomes are contrary to the values of America's founders and impedes our willingness and ability to be a global leader. The rest of the world looks to America for principled leadership. The United States will lead either in an implicit or explicit fashion but it is only explicit and principled leadership that will secure our legacy. If we are to create a better world for ourselves and others, significant changes to our system are necessary. Well informed citizen and representative leaders, acting with patriotic altruism and with a global perspective are the needed instigators of change. These are global citizen patriots. The roles and responsibilities of global citizen patriots are described in detail. In addition to reforming the corruption and cronyism of the present system, global citizen patriots need to lead debates, discussions and reforms that will refresh and update the values of our founders. Currently, too many of our representative leaders are lackeys to special interests rather than leaders of positive change. Changing representative roles, responsibilities, and reward systems are essential to ensuring that our representatives work for us. But this is not enough. We also need to reform the election and re-election processes to significantly reduce the bias of private money. Specific changes are suggested. We need leaders, not lackeys. In the short term, all citizens have the ability to influence change (for example, during the 2016 and future election campaigns). "We the people" need to hold our representative leaders and ourselves accountable to an agenda that adds value to our society while ensuring effective management of America's five capital resources (that is, our natural resources, our infrastructure and production systems, the capabilities of our people, our financial strength, and our social capital). This book offers suggestions on ways to protect and augment our capital resources while ensuring that they are distributed in ways that promote overall societal stability. If you are "mad as hell" about the present state of America, Global Citizen Patriots is designed to channel that anger into action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dimensions of Global Citizenship takes issue with the assumption that ideas about global citizenship are merely Utopian ideals. The author argues that, far from being a modern phenomenon, world citizenship has existed throughout history as a radical alternative to the inadequacies of the nation-state system. Only in the post-war era has this ideal become politically meaningful. This social transformation is illustrated by references to the activities of global social movements as well as those of individual citizens.

Book Bosnia as Civic State and Global Citizen

Download or read book Bosnia as Civic State and Global Citizen written by Philip C. Aka and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For long, the narrative in constitutional law, public policy, and statecraft is that Bosnia must join the EU, as a matter of economic development and nation building. This book introduces another dimension to the narrative, oversighted, without which the story remains one-dimensional, rather than balanced. That missing element in the literature this study integrates is a reformed Bosnian state, along the lines proposed in this book, that operates outside the EU. The setting of the work within the fields of knowledge of comparative constitutional law, and public choice theory provides added value to the reader, including students, scholars, policy makers, and lay persons.

Book Global Citizenship Education

Download or read book Global Citizenship Education written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this edited collection argue that global citizenship education realistically must be set against the imperfections of our contemporary political realities. As a form of education it must actively engage in a critically informed way with a set of complex inherited historical issues that emerge out of a colonial past and the savage globalization which often perpetuates unequal power relations or cause new inequalities.

Download or read book Reclaiming Patriotism written by Amitai Etzioni and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amitai Etzioni has made his reputation by transcending unwieldy, and even dangerous, binaries such as left/right or globalism/nativism. In his new book, Etzioni calls for nothing less than a social transformation—led by a new social movement—to save our world’s democracies, currently under threat in today’s volatile and profoundly divided political environments. The United States, along with scores of other nations, has seen disturbing challenges to the norms and institutions of our democratic society, particularly in the rise of exclusive forms of nationalism and populism. Focusing on nations as the core elements of global communities, Etzioni envisions here a patriotic movement that rebuilds rather than splits communities and nations. Beginning with moral dialogues that seek to find common ground in our values and policies, Etzioni sets out a path toward cultivating a "good" form of nationalism based on this shared understanding of the common good. Working to broaden civic awareness and participation, this approach seeks to suppress neither identity politics nor special interests in its efforts to lead us to work productively with others. Reclaiming Patriotism offers a hopeful and pragmatic solution to our current crisis in democracy—a patriotic movement that could have a transformative, positive impact on our foreign policy, the world order, and the future of capitalism.

Book The Practice of Global Citizenship

Download or read book The Practice of Global Citizenship written by Luis Cabrera and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-14 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this novel account of global citizenship, Luis Cabrera argues that all individuals have a global duty to contribute directly to human rights protections and to promote rights-enhancing political integration between states. The Practice of Global Citizenship blends careful moral argument with compelling narratives from field research among unauthorized immigrants, activists seeking to protect their rights, and the 'Minuteman' activists striving to keep them out. Immigrant-rights activists, especially those conducting humanitarian patrols for border-crossers stranded in the brutal Arizona desert, are shown as embodying aspects of global citizenship. Unauthorized immigrants themselves are shown to be enacting a form of global 'civil' disobedience, claiming the economic rights central to the emerging global normative charter while challenging the restrictive membership regimes that are the norm in the current global system. Cabrera also examines the European Union, seeing it as a crucial laboratory for studying the challenges inherent in expanding citizen membership.

Book Research in Global Learning

Download or read book Research in Global Learning written by Douglas Bourn and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2023-11-06 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young people around the world are calling ever more urgently on policymakers to address today’s global challenges of sustainability, structural inequality and social justice. So it is little surprise that learning in a global society, understanding sustainable development and being active global citizens are increasingly popular themes for education at all levels. Educational research makes a crucial contribution to knowledge that can address the great questions of our time, with evidence from diverse studies vital if we are to build a clear picture. Research in Global Learning showcases methods and findings from early career researchers who conducted illuminating studies around the globe, specifically in Brazil, China, Ghana, Greece, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Poland, South Korea, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, the United States and the United Kingdom. The studies in this volume investigate four important themes: the relationship between policy and practice; opportunities and constraints in the education system and for the role of teachers; challenges for higher education; and the perspectives of young people and students. Flexibility of approach is crucial for successful educational research in varied environments, and is on show throughout this book. Depending on context, authors used case study, quantitative and qualitative research, participatory action research, longitudinal studies and analysis of textbooks through critical discourse analysis to demonstrate how learning about global learning and sustainability can inspire learners and contribute to quality education.

Book Imperial Subjects as Global Citizens

Download or read book Imperial Subjects as Global Citizens written by Mark Lincicome and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009-02-16 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lincicome offers a new perspective on Japanese educational debates and policy reforms that have taken place under the guise of internationalization since the mid-1980s. By contextualizing these developments within a historical framework spanning the entire twentieth century, he challenges the argument put forward by education officials, conservative politicians, and their supporters in the academy and the business world that history offers no guide for addressing the educational challenges that face contemporary Japan. Combining diachronic and synchronic approaches, Lincicome analyzes repeated attempts throughout the twentieth century to Ointernationalize educationO (/kyoiku no kokusaika/) in Japan. This comparison reveals important similarities that transcend educational policy to encompass Japanese conceptions of individual, national, and international identity; relations between the individual, the nation, the state, and the international community; and the type of education best suited to negotiating multiple identities among the next generation of Japanese subject-citizens.

Book Global Citizenship Education

Download or read book Global Citizenship Education written by William Gaudelli and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Citizenship Education addresses the intersection of globalization, education and programmatic efforts to prepare young people to live in a more interdependent, complex and fragile world. The book explores topics such as sustainability education, cultural diversity, and human rights education, offering critical insights into how these facets of GCE are interpreted around the world. The book also strives to give voice to student populations within historically marginalized communities, rather than focusing solely on the role of GCE in elite schools. Gaudelli blends theory and practice to provide both an overview of GCE as well as examining current efforts to develop more globally-conscious classrooms. Blending empirical research and practical illustrations, this important volume encourages educators to take seriously their own call to prepare young people to engage global challenges with a sense of urgency and helps chart a new direction for global learning that is increasingly expansive, dialogic and inclusive.

Book Decolonizing Global Citizenship Education

Download or read book Decolonizing Global Citizenship Education written by Ali A Abdi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideas for this reader came out of a conference organized through the Centre for Global Citizenship Education and Research (CGCER) at the University of Alberta in 2013. With the high expansion of global citizenship education scholarship in the past 15 or so years, and with most of this scholarship produced in the west and mostly focused on the citizenship lives of people in the so-called developing world, or selectively attempting to explain the contexts of marginalized populations in the west, the need for multidirectional and decolonizing knowledge and research perspectives should be clear. Indeed, the discursive as well as the practical constructions of current global citizenship education research cannot fulfill the general promise of learning and teaching programs as social development platforms unless the voices of all concerned are heard and validated. With these realities, this reader is topically comprehensive and timely, and should constitute an important intervention in our efforts to create and sustain more inclusive and liberating platforms of knowledge and learning. “This collection of cutting-edge theoretical contributions examines citizenship and neo-liberal globalization and their impacts on the nexus of the local and global learning, production of knowledge, and movements of people and their rights. Case studies in the collection also provide in-depth analysis of lived experiences that challenge the constructed borders, which derive from colonial and imperial re-structuring of the contemporary world and nation-states. The contributors articulate agency in terms of both resistance and proactive engagement toward the construction of an alternative world, which acknowledges equality, justice and common humanity of all in symbiosis with the social and natural environment. It is a valuable reader for students, scholars, practitioners, and activists interested in the empowering possibilities of decolonized global citizenship education.” – N’Dr
