Book excerpt: Bowie, Bolan, Bryan Ferry and Iggy Pop are the icons that defined the particular type of music that came to be known as glam rock in the early 1970s. It was a period characterized by visual excess and ambisexual confrontation, where performance came to be as important as the music. Glam gave pop back to disaffected teenagers who lapped it up and reinvented themselves as space-age androgynes. Tying in with the release of Todd Haynes' film, Velvet Goldmine, Barney Hoskyns' Glam! is a trenchant survey of a thrilling, thoroughly over-the-top time in pop's life. From Oscar Wilde to Ziggy Stardust, from Liberace to Lou Reed, Hoskyns explores the flamboyant decadence, the bisexuality, and the sheer unadulterated fun of the early seventies. 'It was a brilliant pop era, wasn't it? The last proper pop era, probably.' Mickie Most 'I think rock should be tarted up, made into a prostitute, a parody of itself. It should be the clown, the pierrot medium.' David Bowie 'Our function really is to relieve adolescents of their ills, of all the mental cruelty that's been bestowed on them.' David Johansen, New York Dolls

Book Glam An Eyewitness Account

Download or read book Glam An Eyewitness Account written by Mick Rock and published by Omnibus Press. This book was released on 2005-11-14 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Glam was about make-up, mirrors and androgyny. It was narcissistic, obsessive, decadent and subversive. It was bohemian, but also strangely futuristic. It was Oscar Wilde meets A Clockwork Orange. It was a mutant bastard offspring of glitter. But while glitter was sparkling distraction, glam was anarchy in drag. It was sexy, glamorous, on the edge. It was the moment hippie finally died. It was absolutely rock’n’roll. But it was also fashion, art, theatre, lifestsyle. It was gay, straight, multisexual. It was totally titillating and absolutely naughty. Everybody held hands with everybody, kissed everybody, went home with everybody. It was an age of accelerated discovery, when all the kinks of sexual yearning were flushed out. It was absolutely self-indulgent and it was ridiculously camp. It was a time we thought would never end. A time so long ago now it seems like a dream. But it wasn’t and I have the pictures to prove it.” Mick Rock

  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book I Wanna be Me written by Theodore Gracyk and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gracyk grapples with the ways that rock shapes--limits and expands--our notions of who we can be in the world. [He] sees rock as a mass art, open-ended and open to diverse (but not unlimited) interpretations. Recordings reach millions, drawing people together in communities of listeners who respond viscerally to its sound and intellectually to its messages. As an art form that proclaims its emotional authenticity and resistance to convention, rock music constitutes part of the cultural apparatus from which individuals mold personal and political identities. Going to the heart of this relationship between the music's role in its performers' and fans' self-construction, Gracyk probes questions of gender and appropriation. How can a feminist be a Stones fan or a straight man enjoy the Indigo Girls? Does borrowing music that carries a "racial identity" always add up to exploitation, a charge leveled at Paul Simon's Graceland? Rang[es] through forty years of rock history and offer[s] a trove of anecdotes"--Publisher description.

Download or read book Shock and Awe written by Simon Reynolds and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NPR Great Read of 2016 From the acclaimed author of Rip It Upand Start Again and Retromania—“the foremost popular music critic of this era (Times Literary Supplement)—comes the definitive cultural history of glam and glitter rock, celebrating its outlandish fashion and outrageous stars, including David Bowie and Alice Cooper, and tracking its vibrant legacy in contemporary pop. Spearheaded by David Bowie, Alice Cooper, T. Rex, and Roxy Music, glam rock reveled in artifice and spectacle. Reacting against the hairy, denim-clad rock bands of the late Sixties, glam was the first true teenage rampage of the new decade. In Shock and Awe, Simon Reynolds takes you on a wild cultural tour through the early Seventies, a period packed with glitzy costumes and alien make-up, thrilling music and larger-than-life personas. Shock and Awe offers a fresh, in-depth look at the glam and glitter phenomenon, placing it the wider Seventies context of social upheaval and political disillusion. It explores how artists like Lou Reed, New York Dolls, and Queen broke with the hippie generation, celebrating illusion and artifice over truth and authenticity. Probing the genre’s major themes—stardom, androgyny, image, decadence, fandom, apocalypse—Reynolds tracks glam’s legacy as it unfolded in subsequent decades, from Eighties art-pop icons like Kate Bush through to twenty-first century idols of outrage such as Lady Gaga. Shock and Awe shows how the original glam artists’ obsessions with fame, extreme fashion, and theatrical excess continue to reverberate through contemporary pop culture.

Book excerpt: Philosophically speaking, Zion is a discovery of spirituality, an aspiration to be free of worldly desires when seeking truth and righteousness and salvation through Jesus Christ. The world can be disappointing. In the light, beyond mortal understanding are signs of true immortality, glimpses of heavens dew that appears to be cheated, yet rewarding because Christ is evident through the Word of God and Zions faith. She was used and abused by so many, such as her parents, her paramours, her neighbors, her former employer, to even that of the legal system that is supposed to be circumcised within the law. Her rights were violated, and there was nothing she could do but trust God. She is in the law while out of the system as the system appears to be lawless. Zion within solitude is free to understand what her strongholds are. While Christ is within, she submerges from them with the help of her friend Jeremiah. Both have a fetish for Asian culture, philosophical discourse, and a calling only God can sustain. Through Zions revelations from beginning to end, such as the falls, the floods, the great escapes, and the promise, are all made into fruition.

Book Global Glam and Popular Music

Download or read book Global Glam and Popular Music written by Ian Chapman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-12 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to explore style and spectacle in glam popular music performance from the 1970s to the present day, and from an international perspective. Focus is given to a number of representative artists, bands, and movements, as well as national, regional, and cultural contexts from around the globe. Approaching glam music performance and style broadly, and using the glam/glitter rock genre of the early 1970s as a foundation for case studies and comparisons, the volume engages with subjects that help in defining the glam phenomenon in its many manifestations and contexts. Glam rock, in its original, term-defining inception, had its birth in the UK in 1970/71, and featured at its forefront acts such as David Bowie, T. Rex, Slade, and Roxy Music. Termed "glitter rock" in the US, stateside artists included Alice Cooper, Suzi Quatro, The New York Dolls, and Kiss. In a global context, glam is represented in many other cultures, where the influences of early glam rock can be seen clearly. In this book, glam exists at the intersections of glam rock and other styles (e.g., punk, metal, disco, goth). Its performers are characterized by their flamboyant and theatrical appearance (clothes, costumes, makeup, hairstyles), they often challenge gender stereotypes and sexuality (androgyny), and they create spectacle in popular music performance, fandom, and fashion. The essays in this collection comprise theoretically-informed contributions that address the diversity of the world’s popular music via artists, bands, and movements, with special attention given to the ways glam has been influential not only as a music genre, but also in fashion, design, and other visual culture.

Book excerpt: “[They] said I couldn’t live as a gay man, but it looks like I’m going to die like one.” Good Midwestern girls did not grow up to be gay men and die from AIDS. Unless they were transgender pioneer Lou Sullivan (1951-1991). In this heart-wrenchingly inspirational biography, Brice D. Smith reclaims one of the most tragically overlooked people in LGBT history. Sullivan marched for Civil Rights, embraced the 1960s counterculture, came of age in the gay liberation movement, transformed medical treatment of trans people, institutionalized trans history, forged an international female-to-male (FTM) transgender community and died from AIDS at the epicenter of the crisis. He overcame tremendous obstacles to be who he was and dedicated his life to helping others do the same. An activist to the end, Sullivan inspired a generation to rethink gender identity, sexual orientation and what it means to be human.

Book Alchemy of Punk

Download or read book Alchemy of Punk written by Aneta Panek and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2022-12-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alchemy of Punk, a thesis and opera developed by Aneta Panek as part of her PhD, investigates punk’s poetics and motifs, genealogy, and subversive reinvention. Reaching as far back as the Middle Ages and exploring the tradition of troubadours, minnesingers, madrigals, beggar’s operas, and murder ballads, Aneta proposes to understand punk as an embodiment of Dionysian art; a danse macabre celebrating life through performative, screamed poetry. In her textual exploration of punk—this thesis—she delves into the vast forms of expression adopted by punk’s vagabonds, outcasts, and poètes maudits, and in her artwork—the punk opera—she tests the theories and ideas presented in her thesis, bringing together the greatest voices of classical opera, punk, and industrial rock in an explosive spectacle of theatrical and musical experiences, video installation, and live performance.
