Mountainous old Cambria, the Eden of Bards, Each hill and each valley excite my regards, To the ears of her patriots, how charming still seems, The music that flows in her streams. Wales! Wales! be My country though crushed by the hostile array, The language of Cambria lives out to this day; The muse has eluded the traitors foul knives, The harp of my country survives. Wales! Wales! be The land of my fathers, the land of my choice, The land in which poets and minstrels rejoice, The land whose stern warriors were true to the core, While bleeding for freedom of yore. Chorus - Wales! Wales! favorite land of Wales! While sea her wall, may naught befall To mar the old language of Wales. Book Glimpses of Welsh Life and Character Classic Reprint

Download or read book Glimpses of Welsh Life and Character Classic Reprint written by Marie Trevelyan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses of Welsh Life and Character Writing in the spirit, though not in the letter of the Welsh language, I have endeavoured to give glimpses, or faithful sketches, rather than studies of life and character in Wales. My object has been to awaken English interest in the land and life of the Cymru. Travellers and tourists are acquainted with the popular resorts, the mountains, the cities, and important towns of the Principality, but the remote districts of Wales are unknown to them. The population, the customs and habits of the peasantry in South Wales are familiar only to the few pedestrians or others who leave the beaten tracks and railway routes for the byways, lanes, and bridle-paths of unfrequented neighbourhoods. There the old British character, though modified by the influence of ages, still retains much of its ancient individuality, and the Welsh language, together with a quaint and peculiar Anglo-Cymric patois, survives the great changes that affect the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales From Welsh Wales: Founded on Fact and Current Tradition "The three things notable in a Cymro - genius, generosity and myrth." - Keltic Cookadoodledooism, by the Earl of Pembroke. Amid the bare, rolling hills of Anglesea lived John Jones, a wealthy man and well connected. From a boy John Jones had been short in stature, with a round, protuberant belly, like that of a mush-fed negro child; nor did this stoutness decrease with age, on the contrary, at forty John Jones could only just span his belly with both his hands - for his limbs, like his torso, were short and stout. John Jones was a dark-haired, explosive Welshman, but not quite sharp; his neighbours who "had English" called him "rather soft," but that mattered little to him for he had much money, a fine house and a large garden; indeed, horticulture was his hobby, cock-fighting his serious occupation. He married young and was blessed with two daughters. Soon after marriage John Jones established an annual custom of showing his servants his wealth, the golden sovereigns tightly wedged into a stout, iron-bound, oaken chest, kept in a strong room. All his fortune was there, for in those days in remote rural districts everyone was his own banker. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Letters on Welsh History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Letters on Welsh History Classic Reprint written by Samuel Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on Welsh History These letters are offered to the public in a very imperfect form, because the author has been incessantly engaged in the laborious duties and cares of life from a very early period. But he has sought for knowledge of every kind, nevertheless. Amidst such constant engagement he never found time to study grammar or the rules of composition. On these heads, therefore, the work will be open to some objections, but as to the facts and deductions he feels confident that few objections can be justly raised. They have already been subjected to the ordeal of a critical examination by learned Welshmen in his native land; men possessing every advantage from their knowledge of Welsh history to judge of their correctness. Has heard mentioned, not only in the Principality, but in England also. Some of the Editor' s English friends - themselves being eminent in literature - have said to him, Wechave often heard that there is much of value in your literature and of beauty in your poetry. Why does not some one of your literati translate them into English, and furnish us with the means of judging for ourselves? We possess translated specimens of the literature, and especially the poetry of almost every other nation and people, and should feel greater interest in reading those of the aborigines of this country, with whom we have so much in common. Book Welsh Poetry Old and New in English Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book Welsh Poetry Old and New in English Verse Classic Reprint written by Alfred Perceval Graves and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Welsh Poetry Old and New, in English Verse Mr. Graves's translations cannot fail to give pleasure to those to whom his originals are familiar, but should be welcomed no less by the larger body of readers to whom Welsh poetry is accessible only by the road of translation. Wales boasts of her early poets, and claims for her later singers a share of the divine fire and a considerable proficiency in literary workmanship. The translator's work would be justified if he merely helped his readers to a fair judgment as to how far these claims are justified. Whether Mr. Graves has not achieved more and produced work that deserves to take its place in the fine company of English lyrics, I leave it to more competent critics to say. He has for the most part stuck closely to his originals, but it is not difficult, I think, to trace the hand of the poet, in spite of the shackles of the translator.
