Book Historic Houses of Queens

Download or read book Historic Houses of Queens written by Rob MacKay and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-10 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queens, New York, boasts a rich history that includes dozens of poorly publicized but historically impressive houses. A mix of farmsteads, mansions, seaside escapes, and architecturally significant community dwellings, these homes were owned by America's forefathers, nouveau riche industrialists, Wall Street tycoons, and prominent African American entertainers from the Jazz Age. Rufus King, a senator and the youngest signer of the US Constitution, operated a large family farm in Jamaica, while piano manufacturer extraordinaire William Steinway lived in a 27-room, granite and bluestone Italianate villa in Astoria. Local musicians include Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, and Lena Horne. Through more than 200 photographs, Historic Houses of Queens explores the borough's most notable residences--their architecture, owners, surrounding neighborhoods, peculiarities, and even their fates as some vanished due to financial problems or fires.

Book Historic Buildings

Download or read book Historic Buildings written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Buildings: Now Standing in New York, Which Were Erected Prior to Eighteen Hundred The irregularity of the streets below Bowling Green, - the open space set apart in 1626 for common use, - is evidence of the haphazard way in which the first settlers placed their houses. At first there were only two recognized roads. One of them led from the fort to Brooklyn Ferry at about the present Peck Slip, along the line of the present Stone and Pearl Streets (the latter then the water front). The other, on the line of the present Broadway, went north from the fort, out of the town through Peter Stuyvesant's "Bowerie," or country place, from which this part of the road took its name "the Bowery," and on into the wilderness. For more than a century this was the only highway traversing the island from end to end, and was famous as the Boston Post Road. In these early days the favorite dwelling-place of the quality of the town was along the canal that ran the length of the present Broad Street, then called Heere Gracht. The palisade, built in 1653 along the line of the present Wall Street for protection against a threatened attack by New Englanders, marked the northern limit of the town, and for many years served to retard the natural growth of the town in that direction. In 1664 there were only twelve buildings outside the wall, and only one-third of the area within was built upon. The western side of the town, from Bowling Green northwards, was entirely given over to gardens, orchards, and green fields. On the east the farthest outlying dwelling was Wolfert Webber's tavern on the northern highway, near the present Chatham Square, where travellers rested on their perilous journey to Harlem. Except for the settlement at Sappo-kanican, afterwards Greenwich Village, and the few farms along the highway, this region was empty. Annual round-ups were held of the herds which ran wild in the brush country, beginning where City Hall now stands. Soon after the settlement on Manhattan the Dutch and English turned covetous eyes on Long Island, particularly the neighborhood of Flat-lands, Flushing, Jamaica, and Brooklyn, and here they early built their homes. The English also settled upon Staten Island. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Biography of a Tenement House in New York City

Download or read book Biography of a Tenement House in New York City written by Andrew Dolkart and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I trace my ancestry back to the Mayflower, writes Andrew S. Dolkart. Not to the legendary ship that brought the Pilgrims to Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620, but to the more prosaic tenement on the southeast corner of East Broadway and Clinton Street named the Mayflower, where my father was born in 1914 to Russian-Jewish immigrants. For Dolkart, the experience of being raised in a tenement became a metaphor for the life that was afforded countless thousands of other immigrant children growing up in Lower Manhattan during the past century and more. Dolkart presents for us a precise and informative biography of a typical tenement house in New York City that became, in 1988, the site for the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Dolkart documents, analyzes, and interprets the architectural and social history of this building at 97 Orchard Street, starting in the 1860s when it was erected, moving on to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when the neighborhood started to change, and concluding in the present day as the building is reincarnated as the museum. children, who were part of the transformation of New York City and the fabric of everyday American urban life.
