Book Glimpses of Indian History and Art

Download or read book Glimpses of Indian History and Art written by Tiziana Lorenzetti and published by Sapienza Università Editrice. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Il volume raccoglie gli articoli presentati al Congresso internazionale “Glimpses of Indian History and Art. Reflections on the Past. Perspectives for the Future” (Uno sguardo alla storia e all’arte dell’India.

Book The American Opera Singer

Download or read book The American Opera Singer written by Peter G. Davis and published by Doubleday Books. This book was released on 1997 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In America today, opera has never been more popular, and one reason for this is, no doubt, that American opera singers are fixtures on every leading opera stage throughout the world. In this lively and engrossing account, Peter G. Davis, music critic for New York magazine and a leading opera authority, tells the story of how these plucky, resilient and supremely talented American singers have transformed this venerable European-born art form and made it their own. Starting with opera's arrival in America in the early nineteenth century, Davis shows how American singers grew in sophistication and stature along with the country. From the nineteenth-century pioneers who crashed the gates of Europe's elite opera circles, to the glamorous singers of the early twentieth century who were also Hollywood stars and publicity magnets, to the highly professional singers since World War II who not only have gained European acceptance but now dominate the industry, this lively and highly readable account chronicles the extraordinary lives and adventures of these larger-than-life personalities. Included are Maria Callas, Beverly Sills, Richard Tucker, Leontyne Price, Marilyn Horne, Lawrence Tibbett, and a galaxy of others whose stories are as dramatic and compelling as the roles they sang on stage. Full of prima-donna antics, hilarious backstage anecdotes, and performance lore, "The American Opera Singer will delight anyone who has felt the magic of opera, and will provide a new canon of American singing sure to provoke spirited debate among aficionados. Trained as a musician and composer, Peter G. Davis has been writing about music for over thirty years in such publications as the "NewYork Times, The Times of London, High Fidelity, and "Opera News. He is currently music critic for "New York magazine and lives in New York City. Experience the artistry of America's supremely talented singers on RCA Victor Red Seal's "The American Opera Singer, a companion 2-CD set to this book, now available in record stores.

Book Glimpses of World History

Download or read book Glimpses of World History written by Jawaharlal Nehru and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2004-05-07 with total page 1640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Simple Account of the World History 'Glimpses of the World History' is an account of the progress of the world through centuries and ages. This book is a collection of letters that Jawaharlal Nehru wrote to his daughter Indira when he was in various Indian prisons for three years. The letters were meant to introduce her to the world and its history. In the first few letters, Nehru expresses his sadness for not being able to be around his daughter and give her the materialistic gifts that other parents could but he promises to give her a gift that he could afford; in the form of knowledge and wisdom through words that come from the very core of his heart. Nehru wrote 196 letters and covered the history of mankind from 6000 BC to the time he was writing the letters. Tales of Empires A major part of these letters talks extensively about the rise and fall of empires around the world and development of civilizations as well. Nehru talks about the histories of every significant place ranging from Greece in the far West to China in the east. The book talks about the wars that were fought during these years and the greatest revolutions that overthrew established dynasties. Nehru has also written about the legendary leaders and kings who have walked the earth including right from Alexander the Great to Mahatma Gandhi. A Different View Unlike many other books that talk more or less about particular history of specific cultures, this book is a panoramic view of the history of mankind. It talks about the barbarians as well as the well behaved societies in the far west. Nehru has written this book with lot of wit which makes it an interesting read.

Book India After Gandhi The History of the World s Largest Democracy

Download or read book India After Gandhi The History of the World s Largest Democracy written by Ramachandra Guha and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 871 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ramachandra Guha’s India after Gandhi is a magisterial account of the pains, struggles, humiliations and glories of the world’s largest and least likely democracy. A riveting chronicle of the often brutal conflicts that have rocked a giant nation, and of the extraordinary individuals and institutions who held it together, it established itself as a classic when it was first published in 2007. In the last decade, India has witnessed, among other things, two general elections; the fall of the Congress and the rise of Narendra Modi; a major anti-corruption movement; more violence against women, Dalits, and religious minorities; a wave of prosperity for some but the persistence of poverty for others; comparative peace in Nagaland but greater discontent in Kashmir than ever before. This tenth anniversary edition, updated and expanded, brings the narrative up to the present. Published to coincide with seventy years of the country’s independence, this definitive history of modern India is the work of one of the world’s finest scholars at the height of his powers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses of Indian America: Illustrating Present-Day Life in Mexico and Parts of Central and South America Indians is the result of the attitude of mind of the ruling class toward them. They are not supposed to have any self-respect. Overseers frequently strike them, and children of families where servants are kept are accustomed to domineer over them in a rude and heartless, manner. The Indian has been used as a beast of burden, and brutalised by whip pings and strong drink. While not savages like their brethren in the Amazon forests, they are yet far from being civilised. They have simply been domesticated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
