Book excerpt: Life is but a spectrum of instances, convoluted at some points, conspicuous at others, like a labyrinth of mysteries waiting to present themselves to the anticipant eye. We, who traverse through the waves of existence must keep in mind the tender truths such as those that we are not alone, nor are we helpless. We ourselves hold the key to the life we desire with the determination and willingness to live a little more each day; gaining insight and understanding about oneself and about situations that daunt us; establishing a limit, reaching it, and going beyond, and growing as a person while doing that. Know that your actions alone are responsible for the delights and downfalls that grace your life, and there is always scope for improvement. Thus, learning and working on oneself are tasks that should affect an individual’s way of life.

Food, shelter, clothing and relationships are all we need to be happy. Food grows simply and naturally. Shelter is a simply roof. Clothing is just cloth. Simple relationships consist of enjoying each other’s company without expectations. Beyond these simple needs, we’ve added invented needs: careers, bosses, and co-workers; new gadgets, software and social media; cars and nice clothes and purses and laptop bags and televisions and more. Imagine that you have a few close friends and family members, and you spend ample time with them. You enjoy spending time in solitude—with your thoughts, with nature, with a book, and maybe even creating. This is a simple, effortless life. It’s not effortless as in “no effort,” but it feels effortless, and that’s what matters. And it’s entirely possible. The only thing that stands in the way of an effortless life is the mind.

Book excerpt: A unique and insightful story that will inspire readers to quiet their critical voices and take the panic out of modern living. 'A love song to self-compassion: here's a book for anyone who needs to silence the harsh voice inside their own head.' Richard Glover, bestselling author of Flesh Wounds It's my hope that by the end of this book I will have convinced you that a combination of mindfulness, self-compassion and compassion is all you need to get on your own side - and to help others get on theirs. And when we can all do that, we'll glide through life's challenges. Glide is the story of what happened when serial-achiever Lisa Forrest (Olympian, TV and radio broadcaster, author, actor, wife, mother) took time out to answer a question that had been weighing her down for years: Why, no matter what she achieved, was she never enough for herself? Lisa discovered that the get-tough lessons from her years in elite sport were the source of her problem - in fact, they are the source of much of the illness, burnout and mental health challenges we all face today. More surprising is the antidote: self-compassion. Could it be the super-power we've all been looking for? Drawing on the wisdom of the women who ran Lisa's first swimming club through to contemplative neuroscience, Glide offers remarkably honest and calm insights into navigating the perils of modern living from a woman who has experienced it all. 'In a cluttered, busy, stressful world Glide is a window to finding the space that exists within us - where the clutter falls away, where the negativity transforms, where the chaos is calmed.' Tracey Holmes, sports presenter, journalist, TV and radio broadcaster

Book excerpt: This special edition of the Lectures on Faith from Zion’s Camp Books is formatted for convenience on an eReader, with more than 100 internal links to scriptures and citations. We hope it will give you a great reading experience! The Lectures on Faith were originally prepared as materials for the School of the Prophets in Kirtland, Ohio in 1834 and were included in the Doctrine and Covenants from 1835 to 1921. Although the Lectures on Faith have never been accepted as revelation by the body of the church (and so were removed from the Doctrine and Covenants in 1921), they contain important doctrinal insights that can help anyone seeking to learn more about faith and come closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. President Joseph Fielding Smith noted, “I suppose that the rising generation knows little about the Lectures on Faith. . . . In my own judgment, these Lectures are of great value and should be studied. . . . I consider them to be of extreme value in the study of the gospel of Jesus Christ.” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Seek Ye Earnestly. Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1970.) Elder Bruce R. McConkie of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles has stated the lectures contain “some of the best lesson material ever prepared on the Godhead; on the character, perfections, and attributes of God; on faith, miracles, and sacrifice. They can be studied with great profit by all gospel scholars.” (Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine. Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1966.)

Book excerpt: Drawing on Jesus's example of walking, bestselling author Mark Buchanan explores one of the oldest spiritual practices of our faith. What happens when we literally walk out our Christian life? We discover the joy of traveling at the speed of our soul. We often act as if faith is only about the mind. But what about our bodies? What does our physical being have to do with our spiritual life? When the Bible exhorts us to walk in the light, or walk by faith, or walk in truth, it means these things literally as much as figuratively. The Christian faith always involves walking out, as again and again we find the holy in the ordinary. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, and then he was off. The most obvious thing about Jesus's method of discipleship, in fact, is that he walked and invited others to walk with him. Jesus is always "on the way," "arriving," "leaving," "approaching," "coming upon." It's in the walking that his disciples are taught, formed, tested, empowered, and released. Part theology, part history, part field guide, God Walk explores walking as spiritual formation, walking as healing, walking as exercise, walking as prayer, walking as pilgrimage, suffering, friendship, and attentiveness. It is a book about being alongside the God who, incarnate in Jesus, turns to us as he passes by--always on foot--and says simply, "Come, follow me." With practical insight and biblical reflections told in his distinct voice, Buchanan provides specific walking exercises so you can immediately implement the practice of going "God speed." Whether you are walking around the neighborhood or hiking in the mountains, walking offers the potential to awaken your life with Christ as it revives body and soul.

Book Flow and Flux in Plato s Philosophy

Download or read book Flow and Flux in Plato s Philosophy written by Andrew J. Mason and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this bold new study, Andrew J. Mason seeks both to shed light on the key issue of flux in Plato’s work, and to show that there is also in Plato a notion of flow that needs to be distinguished from flux. Mason brings out the importance of this hitherto neglected distinction, and proposes on its basis a new way of understanding the development of Plato’s thought. The opposition between the ‘being’ of Forms and the ‘becoming’ or ‘flux’ of sensibles has been fundamental to the understanding of Plato from Aristotle to the present day. One key concern of this volume is to clarify which kinds or levels of flux Plato accepts in sensibles. In addition, Mason argues that this traditional approach is unsatisfactory, as it leaves out the important notion of flow. Unlike flux, flow is a kind of motion that does not entail intrinsic change. It is also not restricted to the sensible, but covers motions of soul as well, including the circular motion of nous (intelligence) that is crucial in Plato’s later thought, particularly his cosmology. In short, flow is not incompatible with ‘being’, and in this study Plato’s development is presented, largely, as his arrival at this view, in correction of his earlier conflation of flux and flow in establishing the dichotomy between being and becoming. Mason’s study offers fresh insights into many dialogues and difficult passages in Plato’s oeuvre, and situates Plato’s conception and usage of ‘flow’ and ‘flux’ in relation to earlier usage in the Greek poetic tradition and the Presocratic thinkers, particularly Heraclitus. The first study of its kind, Flow and Flux uncovers dimensions of Plato’s thinking that may reshape the way his philosophy is understood.

  • Pages : 515 pages

Download or read book Love Leads Us Home written by Lori Scarborough and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2024-10-25 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many times do you wonder about Love? What does it mean to Love and be Loved? This book explores from a Biblical perspective how Love is expressed in Scriptures. This book is written to challenge, encourage, and illustrate God's message to us. Love is woven like a Scarlet Thread throughout the Bible connecting verses, chapters and books providing a roadmap to our Eternal Home. This book is not written from a theological lens but is meant to create a safe space for the reader to consider their own thoughts about each Scripture. The book explores ways that as Christians we are called to Love, but also acknowledges that we often fail to Love well in many ways, as we interact with fellow Christians and others within our circle of influence. While the focus is on verses of the Bible that mention the word ‘Love’, there is opportunity to deeper explore many stories within the Bible. The stories may surprise you as we see that Love is not always what we might expect. Let this book speak to you as you discover how the Bible describes Love. It is more than romance, cupids, and warm feelings. God loves unconditionally but directs us how to Love His commandments, each other, and ourselves. How we love others impacts how others view God, as we demonstrate Christ's love through our words and actions. In our brokenness we Love imperfectly but can continue to grow in our abilities. There are several common themes that are seen in this study, and each one is important as we continue to grow in our Spiritual journey. This book highlights the work of other talented artists who have expressed their work through many mediums. Take your time to listen and consider their thoughts as well.
