Book Gleanings in Missouri History Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Gleanings in Missouri History Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Millard Fillmore Stipes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gleanings in Missouri History, Vol. 1 The writer has been impressed. Too, with the fact that comparatively few residents of Missouri have'even a cur sory knowledge of the history of our commonwealth. Yet no State in the Mississippi Valley presents a story of more ln tense interest. Until recently, no history oi our State was ever seen in even the best of our. Schools. As works of reference, only one or two could be had. And even now there are upon the market only three works pertaining directly to the history of our great State. These facts prompted the writer to publish a series of newspaper articles upon the subject, which are reproduced (with some revision) in this little volume. In writing these chapters, two things - in addition to the general trend of the story - have been kept constantly in view: (i) to enrich the pages with such anecdotes and local incidents as came to the notice of the author; and (2) to present as completely as circumstances permitted, pict ures of iife in the territory during the several periods. The most of the incidents related are authentic, but a few rest upon newspaper articles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 'Discovery, ' under Captain Scott, R.N., was sent to the Antarctic Regions, the Trustees of the British Museum gave their assistance to this national enterprise by allowing the cases containing the natural history specimens which might be obtained by the Expedition to be sent to the Natural History Museum for unpacking and sorting. They further undertook to publish a detailed report on the collections so obtained, under the superintendence of the Director of the Natural History Departments. Some of the most important collections have been dealt with by naturalists who were members of the Expedition. Thus, the Mammals and Birds are described by Dr. Edward A. Other groups have been dealt with by members of the staff of the Natural History Departments of the British Museum: Mr. Boulenger describes the Fishes; Mr. E. A. Smith, the Gastropoda, Lamellibranchia, and Brachiopoda; Mr. Jeffrey Bell, the Echinoderma; Dr. Caiman, the Crustacea Decapoda, and the Cumacea; Mr. Kirkpatrick, the non-calcareons Sponges; whilst Dr. G. T. Prior has prepared a petrographical description of the Rock-specimens. It has been necessary to obtain the assistance of other specialists in order to deal with the rest of the collections.
