Book excerpt: The Joint Review Panel (the Panel) was established by the Alberta Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB), the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) and the federal government of Canada to conduct a review of the Dunvegan hydroelectric project on the Peace River proposed by Glacier Power Ltd. The project, proposed by Glacier Power, was to construct and operate a 100-megawatt low head, run-of-river hydroelectric project on the Peace River near Dunvegan, Alberta. This report is the result of an assessment of the environmental and socio-economic effects of the project by the Panel. The aspects of the project which were considered include: project need, purpose, viability and benefits; potential alternatives; effects on the Peace river fishery; ice formation and break-up; geotechnical issues (slope stability, sedimentation and channel morphology, seismicity); navigable waters; First Nations and Metis concerns; vegetation and forest resources; wildlife; health and safety; heritage and visual resources; and decommissioning.
