Book Glaciation in the Logan Quadrangle Utah

Download or read book Glaciation in the Logan Quadrangle Utah written by J. Llewellyn Young and published by . This book was released on 1939 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That the higher valleys of the Wasatch Mountains ere occupied by Pleistocene glaciers has long been known. King, Hague, and Emmons, geologists of the Fortieth Parallel Survey, the first to undertake a systematic study of any part of the Wasatch Mountains, recognized this fact and their report includes a map which shows 1n a rough ay the extent of the glaciated areas in the Central Wasatch (II) In 1909 Atwood (1) made a detailed study of the glacial features of the Central Wasatch in connection with his study of glaciation in the Uinta Mountains. He mapped the deposits of 2 distinct glacial ages, but did not consider any part of the range north of Salt Lake County. Recently Bradley(8) has discovered the deposits of a third and older glacial age in the Uinta mountains, thus indicating the possibility of a similar discovery in the Wasatch Mountains. Blackwelder (6) had previously recognized 3 glacial ages in the Wind River Mountains in western Wyoming and had made preliminary observations on glaciation in the Stansbury and Oquirrh ranges, Utah (7). While these studied have been completed tor the central part of the Wasatch Range and for surrounding regions, no description of the glacial geology of the Northern Wasatch has ever appeared.

This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glaciation of the Uinta and Wasatch Mountains The Uinta Mountains are located in the northeastern portion of Utah and consist of a single range of peaks extending in a general east-west direction. If the crest line of this range were continued westward it would cross the Wasatch Range nearly at a right angle and reach the great Bonneville basin a few miles south of Salt Lake City. These two mountain ranges therefore stand nearly at right angles to each other, and yet are separated by a distance of not more than 10 miles. (see fig. Book A Hiking Guide to the Geology of the Wasatch Mountains

Download or read book A Hiking Guide to the Geology of the Wasatch Mountains written by William T. Parry and published by University of Utah Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northern Utah's Wasatch Mountains are popular destinations for outdoor enthusiasts in every season. These mountains rise spectacularly from the relatively flat valley floor to thirteen peaks over 11,000 feet in elevation. An additional nineteen peaks rise more than 10,000 feet in elevation. Although many hiking guides exist for the Wasatch Mountains, there has been no guide book that focuses on the geologic features visible from the trails--until now. Written by a recognized authority on the geology of the Wasatch Mountains, this guide is meant to enrich the experience of outdoor enthusiasts who want to understand the geological history and development of the Wasatch range. The first section of the book introduces the major geological time periods--the record of mountain building events from oldest to youngest, the effects of glaciation, and the development of the present topography. It then follows with a descriptive trail guide for each major trail system, including Mill Creek and Neffs Canyons, Mount Olympus, Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons, and Bells Canyon. Trail length, elevation gain, relative difficulty, and major geological features are outlined for each trail. Now you can hike these trails with the answers to all your geologic questions right at your fingertips.

Book Quaternary Glaciations Extent and Chronology

Download or read book Quaternary Glaciations Extent and Chronology written by J. Ehlers and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-10-02 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second of three volumes in which the recent knowledge of the extent and chronology of Quaternary glaciations has been compiled on a global scale. This information is seen as a fundamental requirement, not only for the glacial community, but for the wider user-community of general Quaternary workers. In particular the need for accurate ice-front positions is a basic requirement for the rapidly growing field of palaeoclimate modelling. In order to provide the information for the widest-possible range of users in the most accessible form, a series of digital maps was prepared. The glacial limits were mapped in ArcView, the Geographical Information System (GIS) used by the work group. Included with the publication is a CD with digital maps, showing glacial limits, end moraines, ice-dammed lakes, glacier-induced drainage diversions and the locations of key sections through which the glacial limits are defined and dated. The last deglaciation is also shown in 500 year time-steps. The digital maps in this volume cover the USA and Canada and include Greenland and Hawaii. Both overview maps and more detailed maps at a scale 1: 1,000,000 are provided. Book Geology of Utah s Mountains Peaks and Plateaus

Download or read book Geology of Utah s Mountains Peaks and Plateaus written by William T. Parry and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utah’s landscape is among the most spectacular in the world. It is a region of prominent peaks, sweeping valleys, dramatic canyons, and plateaus rimmed by sheer cliffs. Unique among western states, Utah’s landscape includes the Colorado Plateau, Basin and Range, and Rocky Mountains geologic provinces. Exposed rocks tell the geologic story of the region’s basement structures, overlying surface features, and rock sequences that have contributed to sculpting the appearance of today's landscape. Rocks and formations record the evolution of the western part of the North American continent, and give clues to the nature of ancient crustal basement and Earth’s deeper layers. Climate change has shaped the present landscape through the erosional power of ancient glaciers and the presence of today’s large lakes and basins. Geology of Utah introduces the state’s deep earth, plate tectonics, and the development of its ancient mountains. It describes the geology of the three main geological provinces, ancient elevations, cliffs, valleys, and the history of the region’s climate. This book will enrich the experience of enthusiastic amateur geologists who want to understand and explore the development of Utah's highlands and the history of this dynamic landscape.
