Book excerpt: This volume - a Festschrift in honour of the renowned Acts-scholar Eckhard Plümacher - contains thirteen articles on Luke's Acts of the Apostles. Presented are essays concerning Luke's language and style (Alexander, Koch, Steyn, Victor), the literary and historiographical technique applied in Acts (Moessner, Koch, Lindemann), on Luke's theology / Christology (Schröter, Vouga) and on the use (and abuse) of Acts for reconstructing aspects of the history of Early Christianity (Breytenbach, Horn, Schmithals) and for constructing theology relevant to modern culture (Vouga). Furthermore it contains a critical edition and commentary of the Martyrdom of Stephen with a discussion of its relationship to Acts (Bovon/Bouvier) and a presentation and discussion of some unknown Coptic Fragments of Acts (Bethge).

Book Representation Theory and Algebraic Geometry

Download or read book Representation Theory and Algebraic Geometry written by Vladimir Baranovsky and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this volume explore the influence of the Russian school on the development of algebraic geometry and representation theory, particularly the pioneering work of two of its illustrious members, Alexander Beilinson and Victor Ginzburg, in celebration of their 60th birthdays. Based on the work of speakers and invited participants at the conference “Interactions Between Representation Theory and Algebraic Geometry”, held at the University of Chicago, August 21-25, 2017, this volume illustrates the impact of their research and how it has shaped the development of various branches of mathematics through the use of D-modules, the affine Grassmannian, symplectic algebraic geometry, and other topics. All authors have been deeply influenced by their ideas and present here cutting-edge developments on modern topics. Chapters are organized around three distinct themes: Groups, algebras, categories, and representation theory D-modules and perverse sheaves Analogous varieties defined by quivers Representation Theory and Algebraic Geometry will be an ideal resource for researchers who work in the area, particularly those interested in exploring the impact of the Russian school.

Book Matrix and Operator Equations and Applications

Download or read book Matrix and Operator Equations and Applications written by Mohammad Sal Moslehian and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-29 with total page 763 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns matrix and operator equations that are widely applied in various disciplines of science to formulate challenging problems and solve them in a faithful way. The main aim of this contributed book is to study several important matrix and operator equalities and equations in a systematic and self-contained fashion. Some powerful methods have been used to investigate some significant equations in functional analysis, operator theory, matrix analysis, and numerous subjects in the last decades. The book is divided into two parts: (I) Matrix Equations and (II) Operator Equations. In the first part, the state-of-the-art of systems of matrix equations is given and generalized inverses are used to find their solutions. The semi-tensor product of matrices is used to solve quaternion matrix equations. The contents of some chapters are related to the relationship between matrix inequalities, matrix means, numerical range, and matrix equations. In addition, quaternion algebras and their applications are employed in solving some famous matrix equations like Sylvester, Stein, and Lyapunov equations. A chapter devoted to studying Hermitian polynomial matrix equations, which frequently arise from linear-quadratic control problems. Moreover, some classical and recently discovered inequalities for matrix exponentials are reviewed. In the second part, the latest developments in solving several equations appearing in modern operator theory are demonstrated. These are of interest to a wide audience of pure and applied mathematicians. For example, the Daugavet equation in the linear and nonlinear setting, iterative processes and Volterra-Fredholm integral equations, semicircular elements induced by connected finite graphs, free probability, singular integral operators with shifts, and operator differential equations closely related to the properties of the coefficient operators in some equations are discussed. The chapters give a comprehensive account of their subjects. The exhibited chapters are written in a reader-friendly style and can be read independently. Each chapter contains a rich bibliography. This book is intended for use by both researchers and graduate students of mathematics, physics, and engineering.

The fib, Fédération internationale du béton, is a not-for-profit association formed by 45 national member groups and approximately 1000 corporate and individual members. The fib’s mission is to develop at an international level the study of scientific and practical matters capable of advancing the technical, economic, aesthetic and environmental performance of concrete construction. The fib, was formed in 1998 by the merger of the Euro-International Committee for Concrete (the CEB) and the International Federation for Prestressing (the FIP). These predecessor organizations existed independently since 1953 and 1952, respectively.

Book Dreaming across Languages and Cultures

Download or read book Dreaming across Languages and Cultures written by Laurence Wong and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-02 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreaming across Languages and Cultures: A Study of the Literary Translations of the Hong lou meng (also called The Dream of the Red Chamber, Red Chamber Dream, or The Story of the Stone) is a groundbreaking monograph in translation studies. Integrating theory with practice, it examines, analyses, compares, and evaluates 14 versions of the greatest Chinese novel in five major European languages, namely, English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. In this study, translation, linguistic, literary, and semiotic theories, as well as the author’s own experience of translating Dante and Shakespeare, are drawn on. Though primarily aimed at scholars specializing in translation and in Hong lou meng studies, the book also introduces students of Chinese literature, comparative literature, and cultural studies to new interdisciplinary perspectives. By illustrating salient points with lively and interesting examples, too, it enables the non-specialist to see the fascinating intricacies of language and translation, as well as the complex relationship between translation and culture. In view of its new approach to a new topic, of its many impressive insights, and, above all, of the amazing depth and breadth of its investigation, Dreaming across Languages and Cultures is truly monumental.
