Book excerpt: The woman I approached looked very different than my twin sister did the last time I saw her. Could this be a ruse; somebody pretending to be my long-lost identical twin sister? But what would be the object of such an action? Our family didnt have any money and we certainly couldnt have come into the view of some gangster or national embezzler. We are an average farming family who had to give up farming and resort to becoming employees of small local businesses. Surely nobody would target us for a scam. If it really is Anastasia, why all the cloak and dagger moves? Surely, she wouldnt lie to me and make up some impossible story about her life and why she had been lost from us for so many years! When she removed her sun glasses, I knew it was Anastasia, my identical twin sister who had gone to a lot of trouble to hide her identity from her new world. My heart dropped to the ground as I sat down across from her. Where had she been all these years and what happened to make her deny her family and who could hate her enough to want to kill her? I had hundreds of questions I wanted to ask, but she had given me a script that I had to abide with, because we were both in danger for our lives just sitting here talking.

Book Fields of Screams

Download or read book Fields of Screams written by Barry Reid and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than three million children between the ages of six and eighteen played for organized youth soccer teams in the United States last year. By far, most of them played in the novice and beginning divisions. Teams need coaches to guide them, particularly in those levels. With an average of two coaches per team, that means that approximately one hundred thousand coaches coached those kids last season. Very few leagues have an overabundance of youth coaches at their disposal. It is common for many soccer leagues to beg and plead with parents of soccer players to coach their childs team. Far too often, leagues pose the threat to parents that their sons or daughters might not be able to play that season, unless a parent of a player on the team without a coach steps up and decides to coach. If they dont coach, their childrens seasons may be over before they begin.

  • Author : Douglas Heil
  • Publisher : McFarland

  • ISBN : 1476664609
  • Pages : 355 pages

Download or read book The Art of Stereography written by Douglas Heil and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-dimensional stereoviews were wildly popular in the mid-19th century. Yet public infatuation fueled highbrow scorn, and even when they fell from favor, critics retained their disdain. Thus a dazzling body of photographic work has unjustly been buried. This book explores how compelling images were made by carefully combining subject matter, composition, lighting, tonality, blocking and depth. It draws upon the fine arts, the mass media, humanities, history, and even geology. Throughout, overlooked photographers are celebrated, such as the one who found extraordinary visual parallels within nature, anticipating Cezanne and Seurat--or the one who refused to play favorites during a bitter war and found humanity on both sides--or the one who took a favorite American glen and found menace all about. Stereographers were actually more like film directors or television producers than large format photographers: the best ones fused artistry with commercial appeal.

Book Black Women of the Harlem Renaissance Era

Download or read book Black Women of the Harlem Renaissance Era written by Lean'tin L. Bracks and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Harlem Renaissance is considered one of the most significant periods of creative and intellectual expression for African Americans. Beginning as early as 1914 and lasting into the 1940s, this era saw individuals reject the stereotypes of African Americans and confront the racist, social, political, and economic ideas that denied them citizenship and access to the American Dream. While the majority of recognized literary and artistic contributors to this period were black males, African American women were also key contributors. Black Women of the Harlem Renaissance Era profiles the most important figures of this cultural and intellectual movement. Highlighting the accomplishments of black women who sought to create positive change after the end of WWI, this reference work includes representatives not only from the literary scene but also: Activists Actresses Artists Educators Entrepreneurs Musicians Political leaders Scholars By acknowledging the women who played vital—if not always recognized—roles in this movement, this book shows how their participation helped set the stage for the continued transformation of the black community well into the 1960s. To fully realize the breadth of these contributions, editors Lean’tin L. Bracks and Jessie Carney Smith have assembled profiles written by a number of accomplished academics and historians from across the country. As such, Black Women of the Harlem Renaissance Era will be of interest to scholars of women’s studies, African American studies, and cultural history, as well as students and anyone wishing to learn more about the women of this important era.
