Book Giraldi Cambrensis Opera Vol 2

Download or read book Giraldi Cambrensis Opera Vol 2 written by Giraldus Cambrensis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Giraldi Cambrensis Opera, Vol. 2: Gemma Ecclesiastica That book, hitherto reserved for the exclusive perusal of popes and archbishops, is now submitted to the reader. It has never been printed before, and no other ms. Of it is known to exist except the one, now in the possession of his Grace the archbishop of Canterbury, to whose liberality and condescension I am indebted for the loan of it. Whether this be the very volume that was presented by Giraldus to pope Innocent III, or whether the papal copy still remains among the un sunned treasures of the Vatican, I can not undertake to determine. The Lambeth copy is worthy of pre sentation to pope or cardinal. It is a noble ms, very carefully written in double columns in a hand of the thirteenth century; the ink is still as glossy as a raven's down, and the vellum as rich as consular ivory. Strangely, too, some leaves in the middle are stained and shrivelled with sea water. But all theory on this subject I must leave to others. It is enough that a genuine ms. Of the work is still preserved at Lambeth, whatever may have been the fate of that which Innocent once kept at his bed's head. Book The Carole A Study of a Medieval Dance

Download or read book The Carole A Study of a Medieval Dance written by Robert Mullally and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The carole was the principal social dance in France and England from c. 1100 to c. 1400 and was frequently mentioned in French and English medieval literature. However, it has been widely misunderstood by contributors in recent citations in dictionaries and reference books, both linguistic and musical. The carole was performed by all classes of society - kings and nobles, shepherds and servant girls. It is described as taking place both indoors and outdoors. Its central position in the life of the people is underlined by references not only in what we might call fictional texts, but also in historical (or quasi-historical) writings, in moral treatises and even in a work on astronomy. Dr Robert Mullally's focus is very much on details relevant to the history, choreography and performance of the dance as revealed in the primary sources. This methodology involves attempting to isolate the term carole from other dance terms not only in French, but also in other languages. Mullally's groundbreaking study establishes all the characteristics of this dance: etymological, choreographical, lyrical, musical and iconographical.

Book Excommunication in Thirteenth Century England

Download or read book Excommunication in Thirteenth Century England written by Felicity Hill and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-09 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excommunication was the medieval churchâs most severe sanction, used against people at all levels of society. It was a spiritual, social, and legal penalty. Excommunication in Thirteenth-Century England offers a fresh perspective on medieval excommunication by taking a multi-dimensional approach to discussion of the sanction. Using England as a case study, Felicity Hill analyzes the intentions behind excommunication; how it was perceived and received, at both national and local level; the effects it had upon individuals and society. The study is structured thematically to argue that our understanding of excommunication should be shaped by how it was received within the community as well as the intentions of canon law and clerics. Challenging past assumptions about the inefficacy of excommunication, Hill argues that the sanction remained a useful weapon for the clerical elite: bringing into dialogue a wide range of source material allows âeffectivenessâ to be judged within a broader context. The complexity of political communication and action are revealed through public, conflicting, accepted and rejected excommunications. Excommunication could be manipulated to great effect in political conflicts and was an important means by which political events were communicated down the social strata of medieval society. Through its exploration of excommunication, the book reveals much about medieval cursing, pastoral care, fears about the afterlife, social ostracism, shame and reputation, and mass communication.
