Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the time of a devastating pandemic, seven women and three men withdraw to a country estate outside Florence to give themselves a diversion from the death around them. Once there, they decide to spend some time each day telling stories, each of the ten to tell one story each day. They do this for ten days, with a few other days of rest in between, resulting in the 100 stories of the Decameron. The Decameron was written after the Black Plague spread through Italy in 1348. Most of the tales did not originate with Boccaccio; some of them were centuries old already in his time, but Boccaccio imbued them all with his distinctive style. The stories run the gamut from tragedy to comedy, from lewd to inspiring, and sometimes all of those at once. They also provide a detailed picture of daily life in fourteenth-century Italy.

Book The English Boccaccio

Download or read book The English Boccaccio written by Guyda Armstrong and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio has had a long and colourful history in English translation. This new interdisciplinary study presents the first exploration of the reception of Boccaccio’s writings in English literary culture, tracing his presence from the early fifteenth century to the 1930s. Guyda Armstrong tells this story through a wide-ranging journey through time and space – from the medieval reading communities of Naples and Avignon to the English court of Henry VIII, from the censorship of the Decameron to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, from the world of fine-press printing to the clandestine pornographers of 1920s New York, and much more. Drawing on the disciplines of book history, translation studies, comparative literature, and visual studies, the author focuses on the book as an object, examining how specific copies of manuscripts and printed books were presented to an English readership by a variety of translators. Armstrong is thereby able to reveal how the medieval text in translation is remade and re-authorized for every new generation of readers.

Book excerpt: This is a translation of Boccaccio`s "Il libro di Difinizioni", first translated into English by "H.G." (probably Henry Grantham) in London, 1566. Giovanni Boccaccio (1313 – 21 December 1375) was an Italian author and poet, a friend, student, and correspondent of Petrarch, an important Renaissance humanist and the author of a number of notable works including the Decameron, On Famous Women, and his poetry in the Italian vernacular. Boccaccio is particularly notable for his dialogue, of which it has been said that it surpasses in verisimilitude that of virtually all of his contemporaries, since they were medieval writers and often followed formulaic models for character and plot.

Download or read book The Decameron of Giovanni Boccaccio Part I Dodo Press written by Giovanni Boccaccio and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) was an Italian author and poet, a friend and correspondent of Petrarch, and an important Renaissance humanist in his own right and author of a number of notable works including: On Famous Women: The Decameron and his poetry in the vernacular. Boccaccio's characters are notable for their era in that they are realistic, spirited and clever individuals who are grounded in reality. It is believed he was tutored by Giovanni Mazzuoli and received from him an early introduction to the works of Dante. In Naples, he began what he considered his true vocation, poetry. Works produced in this period include: Filostrato, Teseida, Filocolo a prose version of an existing French romance, and La Caccia di Diana a poem in octave rhyme listing Neapolitan women. He began work on The Decameron of Giovanni Boccaccio around 1349. The work was largely complete by 1352 and it was Boccaccio's final effort in literature and one of his last works in Italian. Amongst his other works are La Fiammetta, Life of Dante and A Story of Ravenna.
