Download or read book Myal written by Erna Brodber and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2014-08-08 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jamaican-born novelist and sociologist Erna Brodber describes Myal as “an exploration of the links between the way of life forged by the people of two points of the black diaspora—the Afro-Americans and the Afro-Jamaicans.” Operating on many literary levels—thematically, linguistically, stylistically—it is the story of women’s cultural and spiritual struggle in colonial Jamaica. The novel opens at the beginning of the 20th century with a community gathering to heal the mysterious illness of a young woman, Ella, who has returned to Jamaica after an unsuccessful marriage abroad. The Afro-Jamaican religion myal, which asserts that good has the power to conquer all, is invoked to heal Ella, who has been left "zombified” and devoid of any black soul. Ella, who is light skinned enough to pass for white, has suffered a breakdown after her white American husband produced a black-face minstrel show based on the stories of her village and childhood. This cultural appropriation is one of a series Ella encountered in her life, and parallels the ongoing theft of the labor and culture of colonized peoples for imperial gain and pleasure. The novel‘s rich, vivid language and vital characters earned it the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Canada and the Caribbean. The novel links nicely with Brodber’s coming-of-age story, Jane & Louisa Will Soon Come Home, also from Waveland Press, for its similar images, themes, and specific Jamaican cultural references to colonialism, religion, slavery, gender, and identity. Both novels are Brodber’s way of telling stories outside of published history to point out the whitewashing and distortion of black history through religion and colonialism.

Book excerpt: Marella Demick was just eighteen when she was brutally attacked on her way home late one night. Fleeing her hometown for the safety and privacy of Bluff’s Edge, Ella focused on her recovery and putting the past behind her. Now, seven years later, Ella is convinced that the rapes of three women are being carried out by the same man who attached her all those years ago. Returning to Posey Cove was not in her plans, but knowing what she knows, she’ll do anything to stop a monster from striking again. When Ella walks into the office of Behind the Scenes, she’s shocked to see Tuck Mallory. Lawyer turned private investigator; Tuck’s family has deep ties with Ella’s. In fact, Ella was working for Tuck the summer she was attacked. Tuck’s never forgotten the night Ella was attacked, or the shock at discovering she had not only been beaten, but raped as well. Now, the two join forces to track down a rapist. With little to go on and not much memory of that fatal night, Ella will have to lean on Tuck to help her catch a madman. Fighting an intense attraction, the two will have to put everything on the line in order to prevent Ella from becoming a victim once again.

Book excerpt: Two detectives hunt a killer amidst the lawless streets and high society of 1930’s Glasgow in this “brawling series debut” (The New York Times Book Review) that “serves up a delicious slice of gangster noir” (Adrian McKinty)—inspired by the true story of the Scottish Untouchables. “A Glaswegian version of Peaky Blinders, with razor gangs brawling in the street and festering family secrets . . . a dark and powerful story.”―Sunday Times Glasgow, 1932. When the son-in-law of one of the city’s wealthiest shipbuilders is found floating in the River Clyde with his throat cut, it falls to Inspector Jimmy Dreghorn to lead the murder case–despite sharing a troubled history with the victim’s widow. From the flying fists and flashing blades of Glasgow’s gangland underworld to the backstabbing upper echelons of government and big business, Dreghorn and his partner, “Bonnie” Archie McDaid, will have to dig deep into Glasgow society to find out who wanted the man dead and why. All the while, a sadistic murderer stalks the post-war city, leaving a trail of dead bodies in their wake. As the case deepens, Dreghorn realizes that the answers may lie in his old ties with the victim’s family—and the horrors he saw in the Great War. Edge of the Grave is historical noir at its very best—a gripping mystery that truly transports the reader to the lawless streets and high society of 1930s Glasgow and brings a teeming, chaotic city irresistibly to life.

Download or read book Fundamentalists in the Public Square written by Madison Trammel and published by Lexham Academic. This book was released on 2023-12-13 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A myth-busting work on fundamentalists and culture The Scopes Trial of 1925 is often regarded as a turning point in the history of American fundamentalism and evangelicalism. It is claimed that Scopes was a public relations defeat that sent fundamentalism into retreat from mainstream culture. In Fundamentalists in the Public Square: Evolution, Alcohol, and the Culture Wars after the Scopes Trial, Madison Trammel argues that such a characterization is misguided. Using documentary evidence from newspapers in the 1920s and 1930s, Trammel shows that fundamentalists remained fully active in seeking to transform the culture for Christ, and they remained so through the rise of Billy Graham's ministry. Grounded in historical evidence, Fundamentalists in the Public Square offers a fresh take on the relationship between fundamentalism, evangelicalism, and the public square.
