Book Just One of the Boys

  • Author : Gillian M Rodger

Download or read book Just One of the Boys written by Gillian M Rodger and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Female-to-male crossdressing became all the rage in the variety shows of nineteenth-century America and began as the domain of mature actresses who desired to extend their careers. These women engaged in the kinds of raucous comedy acts usually reserved for men. Over time, as younger women entered the specialty, the comedy became less pointed and more centered on the celebration of male leisure and fashion. Gillian M. Rodger uses the development of male impersonation from the early nineteenth century to the early twentieth century to illuminate the history of the variety show. Exploding notions of high- and lowbrow entertainment, Rodger looks at how both performers and forms consistently expanded upward toward respectable—and richer—audiences. At the same time, she illuminates a lost theatrical world where women made fun of middle-class restrictions even as they bumped up against rules imposed in part by audiences. Onstage, the actresses' changing performance styles reflected gender construction in the working class and shifts in class affiliation by parts of the audiences. Rodger observes how restrictive standards of femininity increasingly bound male impersonators as new gender constructions allowed women greater access to public space while tolerating less independent behavior from them.

Book Typically Gillian

Download or read book Typically Gillian written by Gillian Firth and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spark, from a damaged brain, ignited a passionate entry into a world of words, Gillian Firth's first novel 'Gillian Mk2' made impact. Nicky Rogers, editor 'Mobilise Magazine': 'book that moves you so much ... will be in your thoughts for the rest of your life'. Her first book is 'a triumph', the language is expressive and emotional, and it transcends normal boundaries, akin to a rollercoaster. One moment the reader laughs tears, she rolls a cigarette that 'looks like a Havana and a tampon crossed' in the hospital, it also resembles a joint. Then you cry in pain, the disbelief and the frustration, as the strong young woman becomes a victim of circumstances. But read on ... she will have a giggle around the corner. 'Typically Gillian', a continuation of this journey, requested by followers, she lives alone with help. Her disability is an issue but Gillian carries on, tackling routines of normality, the brave determination is inspirational, her parents and brother are irreplaceable, the harrowing but hilarious recounts of Gillian's exploits are memorable. Gillian brings reality to life and is adamant that she is 'not special', but she is and readers are right 'everyone' should read these books.

Book Gillian Laub Family Matters

Download or read book Gillian Laub Family Matters written by and published by Aperture. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gillian Laub's photographs of her family from the past twenty years, now collected in one volume, explore the ways society's biggest questions are revealed in our most intimate relationships. Family Matters zeroes in on the artist's family as an example of the way Donald Trump's knack for sowing discord and division has impacted communities, individuals, and households across the country. As Laub explains, "I began to unpack my relationship to my relatives--which turned out to be much more indicative of my relationship to the outside world than I had ever thought, and the key to exploring questions I had about the effects of wealth, vanity, childhood, aging, fragility, political conflict, religious traditions, and mortality." These issues became tangible in 2016, when Laub and her parents found themselves on opposing sides of the most divisive presidential election in recent US history; and further exacerbated in the lead-up to the 2020 election, in the wake of a global pandemic and protests in support of Black Lives Matter. Family Matters reveals Laub's willingness to confront ideas of privilege and unity, and to expose the fault lines and vulnerabilities of her relatives and herself. Ultimately, Family Matters celebrates the resiliency and power of family--including the family we choose--in the face of divisive rhetoric. In doing so, it holds up a highly personalized mirror to the social and political divides in the United States today.

Book excerpt: Lillian Selby is a librarian. She works at the Manchester Central Library. She lives alone in a small maisonette in Rusholme, which has been her home since she was an undergraduate at university. Her life is quiet, ordered, mostly solitary, quite mundane. Gillian Lewis is another personality entirely, albeit she and Lillian do have much in common. But back to Lillian. Since almost forever, she has been pretty much completely sedentary and now feels the need finally to travel, having put by a little nest egg, and being at a moment in her life where, as they say, a change might be as good as a rest. It is not, as Lillian finds herself having to fill the utterly unfamiliar shoes of Gillian, facing hostile environments at every turn. Well, to be fair, some good things happen too, you know, like friendship, and even love. As Tom Lehrer famously wrote in his 1951 song Lobachevsky: Who deserves the credit? And who deserves the blame? In this instance, it is Propitious Peregrinations ® that must, in Lillian's view, assume full responsibility. This account of her (mis)adventures is her effort to warn all who may be tempted to follow in her own faltering footsteps. Beware!
