Book excerpt: Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 23. Chapters: Darmstadt (region), East Hesse Highlands, Giessen (region), Giessen-Koblenz Lahn Valley, Gladenbach Uplands, Hanau-Seligenstadt Basin, Kassel (region), Kaufungen Forest, Kellerwald, Kiffing, Oberwalder Land, Rhenish Massif, Rothaargebirge, Spessart, Taunus, Upland (Hesse), Upper Weser Valley, Vogelsberg Mountains, Waldeck Plateau, Weser Uplands, West Hesse Depression, West Hesse Highlands. Excerpt: The West Hesse Highlands (German: ), also known as the West Hessian Lowlands and Highlands (Westhessisches Berg- und Senkenland), refers to a heavily forested region of the Central Uplands in Germany that lies mostly within the state of Hesse, between those elements of the Rhine Massif right of the Rhine in the west, the Weser Uplands to the north, the East Hesse Highlands to the east and the Wetterau to the south. The West Hesse Highlands are one of the major natural regions of Germany (no. 34 or D46) and are part of the Central European Uplands as well as being the watershed between the Rhine and the Weser. The West and East Hesse Highlands or Hesse Highlands correspond to the geological unit known as the Hesse Depression (Hessischen Senke), in its wider sense, because here geologically young layers of Zechstein and Bunter sandstone, and in places even younger rocks like Muschelkalk, of the Jurassic and Tertiary periods, have been preserved. The following geographical units (3-digit numbers) are taken from the Hesse Environmental Atlas (Umweltatlas Hessen): 341 East Waldeck Border Lowlands (Ostwaldecker Randsenken) 342 Habichtswald Highlands (Habichtswalder Bergland) 343 West Hesse Depression (Westhessische Senke) 344 Kellerwald 345 Burgwald 346 Upper Hesse Ridge (Oberhessische Schwelle) 347 Amoneburg Basin (Amoneburger Becken) 348 Marburg-Giessen Lahn Valley (Marburg-Giessener Lahntal) 349 Vogelsberg Foothills

Book Wattles

Download or read book Wattles written by David M. Richardson and published by CABI. This book was released on 2023-11-13 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a comprehensive overview of current knowledge about "wattles", a large clade of over 1000 species of trees and shrubs in the genus Acacia, most of which are native to Australia. It examines the biology, ecology, evolution, and biogeography of wattles in their native ranges, including the evolutionary forces that have driven past speciation and adaptation to diverse environments, the conservation status, uses and human perceptions of these species. It considers the different histories of the introductions and proliferation of wattles as alien species in different parts of the world since c. 1850 (the Anthropocene), situated within relevant political, socio-economic and scientific contexts, together with an analysis of how awareness of their impacts as invasive species has changed over time. Differences in the dynamics and trends associated with the introduction, naturalization and invasion of wattles in different parts of the world are reviewed. The book also synthesizes the global distribution of wattles using diverse data sources, alongside trends, patterns and projections of global uses of wattles. It discusses the genetics, biotic interactions, and ecological, economic and social impacts of invasive wattles. This book is aimed at academics and students in the field of ecology, and at managers of natural and anthropic ecosystems, policy-makers and regulators, and the general public interested in biology and environmental science.

Book Understanding the Bigger Energy Picture

Download or read book Understanding the Bigger Energy Picture written by Michael Düren and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-10 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book focuses on the global cycles of energy, water and carbon, which are not only the essentials of our main energy carriers, the fossil fuels, but are also the building blocks of life. The book offers an overview of the basic scientific facts and relationships that are needed to understand today’s energy generation and use, how they relate to global climate, the water cycle and other resources, and the complexities of energy policy. Building on the work of the Desertec project, it presents the main technological options that we will have in a world after the “Energiewende” and presents the possible future solutions for a sustainable world. The book is written in an engaging, descriptive style that can be understood by those without specific knowledge of science or economics and allows readers to form their own conclusions. Controversy rages over energy problems, climate change and their possible solutions. Expressions like “climate deniers”, “renaissance of nuclear energy”, “stop the war on coal”, and “Energiewende now” represent a diversity of opinions that divide our society and political leaders. This book shows the reader the whole energy picture and how it is part of the wider global problems of overpopulation and uncontrolled economies in a world of limited resources.

Book Aufbruch in die Utopie

Download or read book Aufbruch in die Utopie written by Reisende Sommer-Republik and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1833, two university students from Giessen, Germany, Friedrich Muench and Paul Follenius, decided to immigrate to America and settle in the west. They wanted to create a German utopia in Missouri, and they recruited others to join them by distributing throughout Germany a promotional pamphlet detailing their ambitious plans. The resulting participants spanned various religions, cities, and villages and called themselves the Giessen Emigration Society. By July of 1934, each member had settled along the Missouri River, forming a vibrant German segment of the state whose cultural footprint can still be seen and felt today. In the bilingual book Utopia, this story is brought to life through more than two hundred historic photographs and documents and contributions from both Americans and Germans. The book accompanies a traveling exhibit that will begin in Germany and travel to the German-American Heritage Museum in Washington, DC, and then land in St. Louis at the Missouri History Museum, following the path of the Germans who immigrated to America so many years ago. Utopia serves as both an exhibition catalog and as a historical narrative of the Giessen Emigration Society.
