Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ghiberti and Donatello: With Other Early Italian Sculptors As only two volumes of the series of "Illustrated Biographies of the Great Artists" can be devoted to the Early Italian Sculptors, these little books cannot pretend to give more than a mere outline of the progress of the Sculptor's art at the time of the Renaissance. It is the author's hope that though, from want of space, much critical and descriptive writing had to be avoided, yet that as to historical facts, the work will be found trustworthy. As a sketch, it may so far give a general idea of the subject and the chronological succession of artists, as to prove a useful introduction to the study of deeper authors; and may also serve to be of use as a handbook for Continental travellers. Book Donatello and the Dawn of Renaissance Art

Download or read book Donatello and the Dawn of Renaissance Art written by A. Victor Coonin and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Italian sculptor known as Donatello helped to forge a new kind of art—one that came to define the Renaissance. His work was progressive, challenging, and even controversial. Using a variety of novel sculptural techniques and innovative interpretations, Donatello uniquely depicted themes involving human sexuality, violence, spirituality, and beauty. But to really understand Donatello, one needs to understand his changing world, marked by the transition from Medieval to Renaissance style and to an art that was more personal and representative of the modern self. Donatello was not just a man of his times, he helped shape the spirit of the times he lived in and profoundly influenced those that came after. In this beautifully illustrated book—the first thorough biography of Donatello in twenty-five years—A. Victor Coonin describes the full extent of Donatello’s revolutionary contributions, revealing how his work heralded the emergence of modern art.

Lorenzo Ghiberti, sculptor and towering figure of the Renaissance, was the creator of the celebrated Bronze Doors of the Baptistery at Florence, a work that occupied him for twenty years and became known (at Michelangelo's suggestion, according to tradition) as the Doors of Paradise. Book The Art of Sculpture in Fifteenth Century Italy

Download or read book The Art of Sculpture in Fifteenth Century Italy written by Amy R. Bloch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteenth-century Italy witnessed sweeping innovations in the art of sculpture. Sculptors rediscovered new types of images from classical antiquity and invented new ones, devised novel ways to finish surfaces, and pushed the limits of their materials to new expressive extremes. The Art of Sculpture in Fifteenth-Century Italy surveys the sculptural production created by a range of artists throughout the peninsula. It offers a comprehensive overview of Italian sculpture during a century of intense creativity and development. Here, nineteen historians of Quattrocento Italian sculpture chart the many competing forces that led makers, patrons, and viewers to invest sculpture with such heightened importance in this time and place. Methodologically wide-ranging, the essays, specially commissioned for this volume, explore the vast range of techniques and media (stone, metal, wood, terracotta, and stucco) used to fashion works of sculpture. They also examine how viewers encountered those objects, discuss varying approaches to narrative, and ponder the increasing contemporary interest in the relationship between sculpture and history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the PREFACE. This little work is intended to form a sequel to the previous volume in this series on Ghiberti and Donatello. In that I have given an outline of the rise of Italian Sculpture to the schools founded by those two great artists. In this volume the progress of the art through the 15th and 16th centuries is slightly sketched. The subject being large, the lives many, and space limited, the compression of facts necessary even in a mere outline of the history of Italian Sculpture, precludes the possibility of admitting any original matter. This may perhaps be no drawback, as in a work of this kind it is more needful to make a concise tabulation of facts and clear classification of the different schools and their masters than to give expression to individual opinion. I trust that I have so far succeeded in this, that the volume will prove a useful handbook for foreign travel as well as a guide to the study of sculpture in our own Museums. Leader Scott. Florence, March, 1883.
