Book Manufacturing Transformation

Download or read book Manufacturing Transformation written by Carol Newman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses three questions: Why is there so little industry in Africa? Does it matter? And, what can be done about it? It gives some of the results of a four year research programme by national and international researchers into what makes firms in low-income countries more competitive and what makes countries more attractive to competitive firms. The book fills an important gap in development economics and African studies. There is no other book on themarket devoted to such a comprehensive, comparative, cross-country analysis of Africa's industrialization experience. Both the policy conclusions drawn from the comparative analysis and the case studiesin their own right will be of substantial interest to readers. Policy makers in governments and international development agencies in particular will find the book useful and provocative. This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 IGO licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations.

Book Ghana Policies and Program for Adjustment

Download or read book Ghana Policies and Program for Adjustment written by World Bank and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews macroeconomic trends in Ghana since 1970, identifies policies and programs for adjustment, and assesses prospects for the economy in the medium term. Interactions of poor domestic policies and adverse external events resulted in a downward economic spiral leading to the current critical situation. A gradual decline in per capita income has increased the incidence of absolute poverty and has been accompanied by a worsening of income distribution, growing unemployment and the emigration of skilled professionals. Careful sequencing and phasing of the adjustment process is essential and should entail three phases: (i) stabilization; (ii) rehabilitation; and (iii) liberalization and growth. The medium-term prospects are analyzed under two alternative scenarios, the "low case" and the "highcase". In sum, while much uncertainty remains, Ghana's growth can vary from abysmal to moderately rapid, depending on the combination of the extent to which the Government sticks to and implements its economic reform program and the extent to which donor support these efforts. Separate background papers discuss the cocoa sector; the agriculture, mining, energy, and transport sector; the manufacturing sector; and economic consequence of population growth.

Book Adjustment in Africa

    Book Details:
  • Author : World Bank
  • Publisher : World Bank Publications
  • Release : 1994
  • ISBN : 9780195209945
  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book Adjustment in Africa written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1994 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the second title in the World Bank Policy Research Reports (the first was the headline-making The East Asian Miracle), discusses the economic situation in Africa as it has evolved over the past several decades. To reverse the economic decline that began in the 1970s, many sub-Saharan African countries have undertaken efforts to restructure their economies. This has included liberalizing trade, deregulating markets and prices, privatizing public enterprises, and strengthening management of the financial and public sectors. Implementation has been uneven in different countries, and even those countries that have attempted major reforms have not achieved policies that are considered sound by international standards. A key finding is that improving policies paid off in higher GDR and sectoral growth rates, which are vital to reducing poverty; but in countries where policies deteriorated economic performance worsened. The report also shows that, despite the importance of reforming economic policies, countries need to invest more in human capital and infrastructure, expand their institutional capacity, and develop better governance.

Book Coups Rivals and the Modern State

Download or read book Coups Rivals and the Modern State written by Beth S. Rabinowitz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State development in Africa is risky, even life-threatening. Heads of state must weigh the advantage of promoting political and economic development against the risk of fortifying dangerous political rivals. This book takes a novel approach to the study of neopatrimonial rule by placing security concerns at the center of state-building. Using quantitative evidence from 44 African countries and in-depth case studies of Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire, Rabinowitz demonstrates that the insecurities of the African state make strategically aligning with rural leaders critical to political success. Leaders who cultivate the goodwill of the countryside are better able to endure sporadic urban unrest, subdue political challengers, minimize ethnic and regional discord, and prevent a military uprising. Such regimes are more likely to build infrastructure needed for economic and political development. In so doing, Rabinowitz upends the long-held assumption that African leaders must cater to urban constituents to secure their rule.
