Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gettysburg: The Story of the Battle of Gettysburg and the Field Described as It Is on the Fiftieth Anniversary, 1863-1913 Early's Division had, in the meantime, crossed the South Mountain to Emmitsburg, and thence across country to York. Gordon's Brigade met the 26th Pennsylvania Regiment, which had been posted at Gettysburg when the news of Lee's invasion had been flashed north, near Marsh Creek, a few miles south of the town. This regiment, commanded by a colonel, who so far as is known, had not taken his baptism of fire from organized troops, like many another in the army, was dismayed at the enemy's approach. Some of the men fled; many were captured, but their guns had spoken loud enough to catch the ears of the enemy on the sur rounding territory. Book excerpt: A USA Today bestseller from the author of The First Christmas of the War and its sequels: July 1-3, 1863: The famed Battle of Gettysburg turns the tide of the Civil War, but not before approximately 50,000 soldiers from both sides become casualties during those three terrible days of carnage. June 29-July 4, 1913: To commemorate the 50th anniversary of The Battle of Gettysburg, more than 50,000 Civil War veterans ranging in age from 61 to more than 100 years old converge on the scene of that titanic battle half a century earlier in an occasion of healing that was known as the Great Reunion. Abraham Lincoln had incorrectly surmised in his famed Gettysburg Address that "the world will little note nor long remember what we say here" four months after the battle itself, but those very words could well be said about the Great Reunion that occurred half a century later. Though at the time the 1913 gathering was a widely anticipated, momentous commemoration with 50,000 spectators joining the 50,000 veterans, the grandest of all gatherings of Civil War veterans has been all but forgotten in the nearly 100 years since that occasion. Until now. GETTYSBURG, 1913: THE COMPLETE NOVEL OF THE GREAT REUNION (originally published as a 3-part serialized novel) _______ Travel back in time to meet and spend the occasion of the Great Reunion with the following unforgettable characters in this meticulously researched tale: Doctor Samuel Chambers, a young unmarried Philadelphia physician thrust into great responsibility as Pennsylvania's chief planner of medical and aid facilities for more than 50,000 Civil War veterans, averaging 70 years of age...all of whom will be spending the duration of The Great Reunion encamped in outdoor tents under temperatures expected to approach or even exceed 100 degrees. Louisa May Sterling, a Gettysburg nurse and the young widow of a West Point-educated Army officer whose untimely death from typhoid left her alone with only her son Randall for companionship...but for whom The Great Reunion opens up an unexpected second chance at happiness when she meets Samuel Chambers. Angus Findlay, now just past his 85th birthday but during the Battle of Gettysburg a dashing cavalry officer serving with the Army of Northern Virginia directly under the legendary J.E.B. Stuart...and who became a leading figure in Virginia politics during Reconstruction. Chester Morrison, a classic Gilded Age Titan of Industry (and recent widower) from Philadelphia who decades earlier had been a green private facing battle for the first time at Gettysburg. Edgar and Johnny Sullivan, brothers from Illinois who had been members of the Union Cavalry Division that arrived at Gettysburg the day before the battle began. Years later, the Sullivans became allies of the Earp brothers in Tombstone and were first-hand witnesses to the evolution of Arizona from the Old West to the early 20th century. Ned Tomlinson, a Confederate veteran from Norfolk, Virginia who lost his left leg during the ill-fated assault known ever since as Pickett's Charge before being taken prisoner by the Yankees. John K. Tener, the real-life Governor of Pennsylvania - born in County Tyrone, Ireland, only weeks after the Battle of Gettysburg - who was a former Major League baseball player and under whose leadership The Great Reunion was planned and held.

Book A Strange and Blighted Land

Download or read book A Strange and Blighted Land written by Gregory Coco and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An exhaustive compilation of first-hand accounts of the Gettysburg battlefield in the days, weeks, and months following the fight . . . heartbreaking.” —Austin Civil War Round Table Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863) was the largest battle fought on the American continent. Remarkably few who study it contemplate what came after the armies marched away. Who would care for the tens of thousands of wounded? What happened to the thousands of dead men, horses, and tons of detritus scattered in every direction? How did the civilians cope with their radically changed lives? Gregory Coco’s A Strange and Blighted Land offers a comprehensive account of these and other issues. Arranged in a series of topical chapters, A Strange and Blighted Land begins with a tour of the battlefield, mostly through eyewitness accounts, of the death and destruction littering the sprawling landscape. Once the size and scope are exposed to readers, Coco moves on to discuss the dead of Gettysburg, North and South, how their remains were handled, and how and why the Gettysburg National Cemetery was established. The author also discusses at length how the wounded and prisoners were handled and the fate of the thousands of stragglers and deserters left behind once the armies left before concluding with the preservation efforts that culminated in the establishment of the Gettysburg National Military Park in 1895. Coco’s prose is gripping, personal, and brutally honest. There is no mistaking where he comes down on the issue: There was nothing pretty or glorious or romantic about a battle—especially once the fighting ended.

Book Vermont at Gettysburg July 1863 and Fifty Years Later

Download or read book Vermont at Gettysburg July 1863 and Fifty Years Later written by Thomas Cheney and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable document is rare for a couple of reasons. The first is that it focuses on the men from Vermont who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg. The book details the actions of the Vermont soldiers on the three days in July, 1863 that marked the turn of the Civil War. The second is that the book also contains a rare account of the reunion, fifty years after Gettysburg, by veterans of both sides of the conflict. Meeting at Gettysburg in July of 1913, the veterans shook hands, told tales, and met comrades whom they had not seen in half a century. Included is a very interesting report of how Vermont paid to send the veterans to the reunion and what it cost to do so. This is an important document in the history of the American Civil War and its aftermath.

Book At Gettysburg Or What A Girl Saw And Heard Of The Battle A True Narrative Illustrated Edition

This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes Gettysburg Map and Illustrations Pack – 30 additional maps, plans and illustrations “The experience of a little girl, during three days of a hard fought battle, as portrayed in this volume is certainly of rare occurrence, and very likely has never been realized before. Such a narrative as the following, is worthy of preservation among the pages of our nations literature. The story is told with such marked faithfulness, such honesty of expression, such vividness of portrayal, that those who lived in, and passed through those scenes, or similar ones, will at once recognize the situations, and surroundings, as natural and real. While perusing its pages, the veteran will again live in the days gone by; when he tramped the dusty march, joined in the terrible charge, or suffered in the army hospital. The Heroine of this book, performed her part well; but it is doubtful whether, at the time, she fully realized the heart-felt thanks, and noble thoughts that sprang from the "Boys in Blue," in response to her heroism and kindness. How vividly is presented the weary march to the field of conflict; our eagerness to quaff the sparkling water, as she handed it to us, fresh from the cooling spring. We thanked her, but she did not hear the full gratitude that was in our hearts.”-Preface.
