Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that issues of sexual diversity are inextricably interwoven into the basic concerns of pre-service teacher education. How do we make our students aware of assumptions regarding masculinity, femininity, and sexuality that arise from what is presented, represented, or omitted from curricula and classroom practice? What do we say about homophobia and heterosexism as we anticipate the administrative hierarchies, school cultures, parent and community politics they will encounter as teachers? What special challenges might face a teacher (straight or gay) who discusses sexual orientation in a high school classroom, or responds to a homophobic remark in the hallway or the cafeteria? How should we prepare a teacher for a parent conference with two moms or two dads? The essays in this volume range from an analysis of gay stereotypes in teacher education textbooks, to a discussion of queer multiculturalism, to personal accounts by lesbian and gay teacher educators and heterosexual allies who are challenging homophobia and heterosexism in their own classrooms and programs. All agree that education for sexual diversity is as important as education about all other forms of difference, and that future teachers need to know how to create safe spaces for lesbian and gay students, along with the children of gay families who are increasingly a part of the classroom landscape.

Book The New Dad s Playbook

Download or read book The New Dad s Playbook written by Benjamin Watson and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to the unknown territory of having a baby, moms-to-be have nearly unending resources to plan and execute a healthy pregnancy and navigate those first months and years as a parent with confidence. New dads? Not so much. They want to get in the game too, but, says Super Bowl champion Benjamin Watson, "I could find clearer direction for putting together a baby swing than for taking care of a newborn child." The New Dad's Playbook is every man's game plan to being the best partner and the best father, from pre-season (preparing for fatherhood) to Super Bowl (birth) to post-season (after baby is home). It helps men understand what their wives are going through physically and emotionally during and after pregnancy, allowing them to support their most important teammate. It tells men what to expect when their baby is home--and what to do when the unexpected happens. This tell-it-like-it-is book will take men from just winging it to winning it.

Book Unnormalizing Education

Download or read book Unnormalizing Education written by Joseph R. Jones and published by IAP. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, with the number of students from higher education and K-12 settings committing suicide, it is apparent that homophobia and homophobic bullying are tremendous problems in our schools and universities. However, educators are unclear about an appropriate process for addressing these challenges. In this book, Jones postulates that we must begin exploring the culture of educational environments as they relate to sexual difference, in order to begin conceptualizing ways in which we may begin to address homophobia and heteronormativity. To that end, this book addresses how educators (at all levels) must begin examining how their concepts about different sexual identities are "normalized" through socializing processes and schooling. In doing so, this book examines how individuals construct meanings about homophobia and hate language through "contextual oppositions, " how educational environments maintain a ''false tolerance" when claiming to be tolerant of different sexual identities, how a hierarchy of hate language exists in educational environments, among other issues related to creating safe places for all students. In essence, the book attempts to "un"normalize society's constructions of sexual identity by deconstructing the social norms.

Book excerpt: This book invites readers to explore the critical interruptions occasioned by queer pedagogies. Building on earlier scholarly work in this area, as well as pedagogical production arising out of queer activism, the chapters in this volume examine a broad range of themes as they collectively grapple with the meaning and practice of queer pedagogy across different contexts. In this way, Queer Pedagogies provides a glance at new ways of thinking about and acting on contemporary educational topics and debates situated at the intersection of queer studies and education. In taking up the concept of queer pedagogy, the volume provides ample opportunities for scholars, educators, activists, and other cultural workers to critically engage with ongoing questions of theory, praxis, and politics.

Book Get ready for your IVF

Download or read book Get ready for your IVF written by Gabriela Lacerda and published by Simplíssimo. This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a limiting belief around in vitro fertilization (IVF) that must be reframed: the idea that it is only a technical, difficult, painful and artificial process. IVF is another one of those wonderful proofs of God's love towards us. Therefore, it is nothing but a christic alternative to enable men and women to achieve their paternity and maternity dreams. It was from this perspective that the author, Gabriela Lacerda, a former trying woman and mother of two children via assisted reproductions, shares with her readers a spiritual perspective about the most advanced treatment for couples who have difficulty to get pregnant. In this book, she talks about the metaphysical teachings that were essential to achieve her much-dreamed-of positive in her first in vitro fertilization attempt, giving life to her son Gael, and again, three years later, from the transfer of a single frozen embryo that enabled the arrival of her second son, Benício. What may be seen as good fortune from a distance, for her, who experienced it with a lot of energy, it was the certainty that there was a spirituality watching over every detail of her journey as a conscious trying woman. The one that goes beyond physical symptoms and scarcity thoughts. The one that acknowledges that life goes beyond the visible, the material world. Welcome to the wonderful world of assisted reproduction from a spiritual perspective. Read each page with an open heart. It is safe to get pregnant easily via in vitro fertilization.
