Book Canada Getting it Right this Time

Download or read book Canada Getting it Right this Time written by Joel J. Sokolsky and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1995 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April the Army War College's Strategic Studies Institute hosted its Annual Strategy Conference. This year's theme, "Strategy During the Lean Years: Learning From the Past and the Present," brought together scholars, serving and retired military officers, and civilian defense officials from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom to discuss strategy formulation during times of penury from Tactitus to Force XXI. Dr. Joel J. Sokolsky of the Royal Military College of Canada made the point that for Canada defense policy and strategy traditionally have been made in times of penury. During the Cold War, Canadian policy was one of a strategy of commitment. Since the end of the Cold War, Ottawa has adopted a strategy of choice derived from Canadian national interests. The document upon which Canada bases its defense policy is the 1994 Canadian White Paper. Dr. Sokolsky argues that the current defense policy acknowledges the problems endemic to peacekeeping, but that the rising tide of peacekeeping operations may have passed. Fortunately, Dr. Sokolsky maintains, the current White Paper also allows for a general commitment to multilateral approaches to security. Canada and the United States have stood together for more than half a century; allies and partners in war and peace. As the Canadian Defence Forces and the U.S. Army seek to shape change rather than to be shaped by it, they cannot help but profit from an open debate of the difficult issues that confront them.

Detective Nathan Wolf might just be a junior detective, but he tackles every case with the passion that he lacks in his personal life. A series of failed relationships with women has left him still single at thirty-four—because he’s too scared to admit to his longtime crush on his best friend James. Dr. James Taggert likes to keep his profession as a psychiatrist separate from his party-animal persona. Known around the gay clubs as “Tag,” he’s the guy who screws them, leaves them, and never looks back. But James’s drinking is getting heavier, and when bad memories from the past resurface, he’s close to becoming the worst version of himself. After a drunken blackout ends in a hot and heavy make-out session with his very straight best friend, James has no memory of the steamy affair. But Nathan isn’t sorry for the kisses that James can’t remember. Nathan finally musters the courage to tell James how he really feels, but a life-altering event might force them apart before they can ever be together.

Thirty-one-year-old Gavin Lamb is a shy hairdresser in London’s West End. Self-educated, he likes Mozart and can quote Tolstoy, but being something of a late bloomer, he still lives at home with his parents. Although he’s a master of the styling chair, he simply can’t work out how to be around women—not least his own mother. And the misguided efforts of his best friend, Harry King, don’t do much to assuage Gavin’s unfulfilled dreams of love. One night, he reluctantly attends a party where the hostess, Joan, is a grotesque vision in an orange wig and silver lamé. Joan is rich and married, and Gavin soon finds himself opening up to her. That same night, he meets Minerva Munday, who’s taking a nap on one of the guest beds. Minerva crashed the party and claims to hail from a royal bloodline. Both Joan and Minerva—polar opposites—will transform Gavin’s life in ways a lot more exciting than his nightly fantasies. But true love continues to elude him. Will he ever get it right? The bestselling author of the Cazalet Chronicles has written a witty and perceptive comic novel that went on to win the Yorkshire Post Novel of the Year Award and inspire the 1989 film starring Jesse Birdsall, Jane Horrocks, and Helena Bonham Carter. A man looking for love in all the wrong places, Gavin may come to realize his soul mate has been in front of him all along.

Book This Time I Am Going to Get It Right

Download or read book This Time I Am Going to Get It Right written by Louise Childs and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-03-21 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one is entitled to success; you have to work hard at it. Reflecting back on my life, I must say that providing your children with a definitive plan and giving them the tools to succeed in life by doing something positively constructive in life is relevant. My thoughts for writing this book have been culminating over the years and even though I never thought that I would write a book, I always had something to say. I figured writing a book would be the perfect platform to talk about what I have experienced about being disconnected and not knowing really what I wanted to do, so I did a little bit of everything. For some, they might think that doing a whole lot of things is interesting and audacious and other hand, some may view it pessimistically as being discombobulated. However, from my very own personal perspective, I view it as growth. Are you familiar with the story about the caterpillar that turned into a butterfly and was gradually leaving its cocoon? If you interfere with the process of trying to free the butterfly from its cocoon, the interference becomes injurious to the butterfly and it will never fly. The lessons and the experiences of life can be bittersweet, but they make us who we are and eventually we become that butterfly who is ready to spread its beautiful wings and fly.

Download or read book Getting It Right written by James F. Dunnigan and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-05-31 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second edition of a book about a little understood subject, the dramatic reform of the American military, and particularly the U.S. Army, between the end of the Vietnam war and the Persian Gulf war of 1990-91. The second edition material carries the study through the 1990s and a few years beyond. We cover a lot of subjects that few Americans are familiar with. The reforms after Vietnam were more driven by the results of the 1973 Arab-Israeli war and paid for by defense spending increases begun by president Carter. The end of the Cold War ended up creating a need for more reforms.

Book Getting It Right

Download or read book Getting It Right written by Harley McGee and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1992-11-16 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting It Right is the first "insider's" account of this period of regional development in Canada. Harley McGee draws on his experience with the government at senior regional and departmental levels, and on primary and secondary sources, to examine the evolution of federal regional development policies and the structures developed between 1970 and 1991 to implement them. He dispels some of the myths and challenges some of the perceptions about the manner in which regional development has been tackled by governments in Canada. He explores the federal-provincial dimensions of regional development, as well as the difficulty of reconciling the perceived dichotomy between national and regional policies. McGee argues that the 1982 move away from the DREE model of regional development was a mistake, and suggests that the predilection of governments for reorganising existing instruments of regional development policy and creating new ones has been detrimental to regional economies. Mindful of the new realities of the global economy within which Canada and its regions must compete, and of the promise/threat of rapidly changing technology, McGee identifies the need for a new order of priorities with which governments can meet these challenges and opportunities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting It Right is the story of Kara and Alex, half-sisters who have never met―one the product of an abusive foster-care setting, the other of dysfunctional privilege. Haunted by crippling memories, Kara falls for the wrong men, tries to help her foster-care siblings suffering from PTSD, and longs for the father and half-sister she only knows from a photograph. Alex, meanwhile, struggles to keep her younger sisters out of trouble, her mother sane, and her marketing business afloat. Now Alex has a new responsibility: from his hospital bed, her father tasks her with finding Kara, the mixed-race child he abandoned. Alex is stunned to learn of Kara's existence but reluctantly agrees. To make things more complicated, Kara loves a married man whom the FBI is pursuing for insider trading. When Alex eventually finds her half-sister, she becomes embroiled in Kara's dangers, which threaten to drag them both down. If Kara doesn't help the FBI, she could face prosecution and possible incarceration, and if Alex can't persuade Kara to meet their father, she will let him down during the final days of his life. Set in Harlem, the Bronx, and the wealthy community of Bedford, New York, during two weeks in March, Getting It Right explores grit and resilience, evolving definitions of race and family, and the ultimate power of redemption and forgiveness.
