Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, David Lehman, the longtime series editor of the Best American Poetry, offers a masterclass in writing in form and collaborative composition. An inspired compilation of his weekly column on the American Scholar website, Next Line, Please makes the case for poetry open to all. Next Line, Please gathers in one place the popular column’s plethora of exercises and prompts that Lehman designed to unlock the imaginations of poets and creative writers. He offers his generous and playful mentorship on forms such as the sonnet, haiku, tanka, sestina, limerick, and the cento and shares strategies for how to build one line from the last. This groundbreaking book shows how pop-up crowds of poets can inspire one another, making art, with what poet and guest editor Angela Ball refers to as "spontaneous feats of language." How can poetry thrive in the digital age? Next Line, Please shows the way. Lehman writes, "There is something magical about poetry, and though we think of the poet as working alone, working in the dark, it is all the better when a community of like-minded individuals emerges, sharing their joy in the written word."

Download or read book Case Studies in Educational Psychology written by Patricia P. Willems and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study book serves as a valuable tool for professors and instructors of educational psychology. It contains 18 cases that represent current areas of interest in Educational Psychology embedded within current challenges that teachers face in today’s elementary grade classrooms. The cases are organized into six major parts: Human Development, Individual Differences and Diversity, Learning Theories, Motivation, Classroom Management, Instructional Approaches, and Assessment and Evaluation. Each case describes a detailed teaching scenario written from either the student or the teachers’ perspective. To engage students in critical thinking, perspective-taking, analysis, problem solving and decision-making, the cases have been intentionally written without a conclusion. Because the cases are open-ended, it allows the professor or instructor more flexibility and autonomy in how they use the cases. Each case is followed by thought-provoking questions, highlighting the significant issues in the case, from which to analyze the case and apply various theoretical viewpoints. While the cases do not replace actual classroom experience, they present a way to immerse students in the classroom’s culture by providing them with real-life teaching examples.

Book excerpt: Rob Hidden is not a nice guy. He's a criminal, and he likes being a criminal. He's good at it, and he finds that doing bad stuff makes him feel good. One night this heartless villain comes home to his wife, who informs him the police are on his tail. He lashes out at her, and so began a tirade that would lead to abuse, robbery, and murder. It all started when Rob decides to hide out at the home of his friend, Dave Cart. It appears Dave wasn't expecting company. Seeing the huge pile of money on his table, Rob decides to do what he does best: steal the money and shoot Dave. Seasoned police officer Morgan Sill is called to the scene, but Rob doesn't get far before he is spotted. Sill chases him down, forcing Rob to drop the murder weapon-just what the police need to charge Rob and get him to court. Nothing is simple, though. First, the court must decide if Rob is fit for trial ... or if he's too blatantly crazy to even receive a sentence. Then, there's the court-appointed slimeball lawyer, Crabtree, who will say anything to keep his client out of jail. Sill is worried that Rob is going to get off without even a slap on the wrist. Is there anything the cops can do to stop him, or will evil prevail in the streets?

Download or read book Conversational Routines in English written by Karin Aijmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is surprising how much of everyday conversation consists of repetitive expressions such as 'thank you', 'sorry', would you mind?' and their many variants. However commonplace they may be, they do have important functions in communication. This thorough study draws upon original data from the London-Lund Corpus of Spoken English to provide a discoursal and pragmatic account of the more common expressions found in conversational routines, such as apologising, thanking, requesting and offering. The routines studied in this book range from conventionalized or idiomatized phrases to those which can be generated by grammar. Examples have been taken from face-to-face conversations, radio discussions and telephone conversations, and transcription has been based upon the prosodic system of Crystal (1989). An extensive introduction provides the theory and methodology for the book and discusses the criteria for fixedness, grammatical analysis, and pragmatic functions of conversational routines which are later applied to the phrases. Following chapters deal specifically with phrases for thanking, apologising, indirect requests, and discourse-organising markers for conversational routines, on the basis of empirical investigation of the data from the London-Lund Corpus of Spoken English.
