Download or read book Building the New Man written by Francesco Cassata and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on previously unexplored archival documentation, this book offers the first general overview of the history of Italian eugenics, not limited to the decades of Fascist regime, but instead ranging from the beginning of the 1900s to the first half of the 1970s. The Author discusses several fundamental themes of the comparative history of eugenics: the importance of the Latin eugenic model; the relationship between eugenics and fascism; the influence of Catholicism on the eugenic discourse and the complex links between genetics and eugenics. It examines the Liberal pre-fascist period and the post-WW2 transition from fascist and racial eugenics to medical and human genetics. As far as fascist eugenics is concerned, the book provides a refreshing analysis, considering Italian eugenics as the most important case-study in order to define Latin eugenics as an alternative model to its Anglo-American, German and Scandinavian counterparts. Analyses in detail the nature-nurture debate during the State racist campaign in fascist Italy (1938–1943) as a boundary tool in the contraposition between the different institutional, political and ideological currents of fascist racism.

His book contends that the presence of numerous Illuminati brotherhoods and secret societies—just as those inside the most prestigious U.S. universities such as Yale or Harvard—have always been guides to the occult. From the Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO)'s infiltration of Freemasonry to the real Priory of Sion, this book exposes not only the hidden structure of the New World Order and the occult practices but also their connections to the intelligence community and the infamous Ur-Lodges.
Download or read book I Saw the Muses written by Leonardo Sinisgalli and published by Guernica Editions. This book was released on 1997 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leonardo Sinisgalli (1908--1981) was born in Lucania, Italy, and was a painter as well as a major poet. His images and metaphors arise from nature. His muses perch on an ancient oak, eating, not ambrosia, but acorns and berries. The dominant landscapes of his poetry are intimate, a world of affections, places and people, that transcend time and the particulars of culture and locality. His language is plain and sensuous; his voice, gentle. In his poetry are the wonder of a child and the ironies of a twentieth century man.

Download or read book Showing of Love written by Julian (of Norwich) and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Showing of Love, Julia Bolton Holloway provides a complete translation of Julian of Norwich's ground-breaking text, opening windows of insight into her medieval world. As a female mystic and theologian who was uniquely recognized (in a time when most women were not) for her holiness, Julian of Norwich also came to be known as a catechist, prophet, and spiritual director. Showing of Love records her own healing encounter with divine love and has for many centuries been a source of healing and inspiration for others. Readers of Julian's work find her belief that God sits in our soul as a fair city to be of profound value. That city is every city, Mary its queen, Christ its king. Julian offers these layers in rich text and variant readings. Julian dedicated years of her life to shaping Showing of Love, at the end rewriting it to preserve it from censorship. The anchoress lived in St. Julian's churchyard in Norwich. Her text was saved from destruction by nuns in Brigittine and Benedictine convents, first in England, then in exile after the Reformation. Julian's writings were later published by the Benedictines in 1670. They reveal her strong links with Benedict that continue to have lasting value for readers today. Includes two-color ink on inside pages. Julia Bolton Holloway, PhD, is a vowed hermit living in Florence, Italy. She has published seventeen other works on important historical figures.
Download or read book Aquinas and the Market written by Mary L. Hirschfeld and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economists and theologians usually inhabit different intellectual worlds. Economists investigate the workings of markets and tend to set ethical questions aside. Theologians, anxious to take up concerns raised by market outcomes, often dismiss economics and lose insights into the influence of market incentives on individual behavior. Mary L. Hirschfeld, who was a professor of economics for fifteen years before training as a theologian, seeks to bridge these two fields in this innovative work about economics and the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. According to Hirschfeld, an economics rooted in Thomistic thought integrates many of the insights of economists with a larger view of the good life, and gives us critical purchase on the ethical shortcomings of modern capitalism. In a Thomistic approach, she writes, ethics and economics cannot be reconciled if we begin with narrow questions about fair wages or the acceptability of usury. Rather, we must begin with an understanding of how economic life serves human happiness. The key point is that material wealth is an instrumental good, valuable only to the extent that it allows people to flourish. Hirschfeld uses that insight to develop an account of a genuinely humane economy in which pragmatic and material concerns matter but the pursuit of wealth for its own sake is not the ultimate goal. The Thomistic economics that Hirschfeld outlines is thus capable of dealing with our culture as it is, while still offering direction about how we might make the economy better serve the human good.

Download or read book Fra Angelico written by Paolo Morachiello and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 1996 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To visit the Dominican convent of San Marco in Florence is a uniquely moving and satisfying experience. Here, around 1440, in the tiny whitewashed cells of the friars, in the corridors, cloister and chapter house, Fra Angelico and his assistants - who included the young Benozzo Gozzoli - painted a series of images centred upon the theme of Christ's sacrifice. Conceived and executed as aids to meditation and prayer, they have taken their place among the most exhilarating masterpieces of Western art. Their deep spirituality springs from the Christian theology that was the basis of Fra Angelico's life, but in their humanity and in elements of their style, Fra Angelico comes close to the circle of Masaccio and Ghiberti, at the dawn of the Renaissance. 'The sources of his feeling', wrote the great art historian Bernard Berenson, 'are in the Middle Ages, but he enjoys his feelings in a way which is almost modern.'. This magnificent book is an unprecedented record of the frescoes as they appear today, after a long and successful campaign of restoration that is described by Giorgio Bonsanti. An introduction to the building, and to the painter, is followed by a fully illustrated survey of every picture, with details shown in actual size. Enabling us to come closer than ever before to his work, Fra Angelico: The San Marco Frescoes reveals the artist's tenderness and strength, his freshness of colour and his extraordinary luminosity and subtlety of modelling, and is a superb visual record of this great artistic and spiritual ensemble.
