Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germany in the Later Middle Ages, 1200-1500 This volume completes the series of Lectures given by Bishop Stubbs on Germany in the Middle Ages. A previous volume dealt with the history of Germany from 476 A.D. to the middle of the thirteenth century; the present volume carries on that history to the close of the fifteenth century. While the earlier volume was concerned especially with the characters and careers of the Emperors in the Dark Ages, the present volume follows the history of Germany in a more detailed fashion, and may be described as a storehouse of facts and generalisations. No such history of Germany in the English language exists, and it may confidently be assumed that the appearance of this volume will be received with immense pleasure by all students of the History of Europe in the Middle Ages. The thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries present to the student of European history difficulties of no ordinary kind. The period which marks the transition from the Middle Ages to modern times, and which saw the rapid break-up of a Christendom which had for its centre the Holy Roman Empire, and in its place the gradual formation of the modern European States-system, requires for its elucidation a close acquaintance with the history of Medieval Europe. Book London in the Later Middle Ages

Download or read book London in the Later Middle Ages written by Caroline M. Barron and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2005 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full account of the evolution of the government of London from the tempestuous days of the Commune in the late twelfth century to the calmer waters of Tudor England. Caroline Barron shows how the elected rulers of London developed ways of dealing with both demanding monarchs and quarrelsome city inhabitants. The remarkable survival of the city's own records makes it possible to trace, in unexpected detail, the inner workings of civic politics and government over three hundred years. London was by far the most populous and wealthy city in the kingdom, and its practices were widely copied throughout England. It was, as the Londoners claimed in 1339, the 'mirror and example to the whole land'.

Book Women in Medieval Europe 1200 1500

Download or read book Women in Medieval Europe 1200 1500 written by Jennifer Ward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in Medieval Europe explores the key areas of female experience in the later medieval period, from peasant women to Queens. It considers the women of the later Middle Ages in the context of their social relationships during a time of changing opportunities and activities, so that by 1500 the world of work was becoming increasingly restricted to women. The chapters are arranged thematically to show the varied roles and lives of women in and out of the home, covering topics such as marriage, religion, family and work. For the second edition a new chapter draws together recent work on Jewish and Muslim women, as well as those from other ethnic groups, showing the wide ranging experiences of women from different backgrounds. Particular attention is paid to women at work in the towns, and specifically urban topics such as trade, crafts, healthcare and prostitution. The latest research on women, gender and masculinity has also been incorporated, along with updated further reading recommendations. This fully revised new edition is a comprehensive yet accessible introduction to the topic, perfect for all those studying women in Europe in the later Middle Ages.
