Book excerpt: With the outbreak of the Korean War, the poor, rural West German state of Rhineland-Palatinate became home to some of the largest American military installations outside the United States. In GIs and Frauleins, Maria Hohn offers a rich social history of this German-American encounter and provides new insights into how West Germans negotiated their transition from National Socialism to a consumer democracy during the 1950s. Focusing on the conservative reaction to the American military presence, Hohn shows that Germany's Christian Democrats, though eager to be allied politically and militarily with the United States, were appalled by the apparent Americanization of daily life and the decline in morality that accompanied the troops to the provinces. Conservatives condemned the jazz clubs and striptease parlors that Holocaust survivors from Eastern Europe opened to cater to the troops, and they expressed scorn toward the German women who eagerly pursued white and black American GIs. While most Germans rejected the conservative effort to punish as prostitutes all women who associated with American GIs, they vilified the sexual relationships between African American men and German women. Hohn demonstrates that German anxieties over widespread Americanization were always debates about proper gender norms and racial boundaries, and that while the American military brought democracy with them to Germany, it also brought Jim Crow.

Book excerpt: Recent years have witnessed a resurgence of biological research into the causes of crime, but the origins of this kind of research date back to the late nineteenth century. Here, Richard Wetzell presents the first history of German criminology from Imperial Germany through the Weimar Republic to the end of the Third Reich, a period that provided a unique test case for the perils associated with biological explanations of crime. Drawing on a wealth of primary sources from criminological, legal, and psychiatric literature, Wetzell shows that German biomedical research on crime predominated over sociological research and thus contributed to the rise of the eugenics movement and the eventual targeting of criminals for eugenic measures by the Nazi regime. However, he also demonstrates that the development of German criminology was characterized by a constant tension between the criminologists' hereditarian biases and an increasing methodological sophistication that prevented many of them from endorsing the crude genetic determinism and racism that characterized so much of Hitler's regime. As a result, proposals for the sterilization of criminals remained highly controversial during the Nazi years, suggesting that Nazi biological politics left more room for contention than has often been assumed.

Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: The speed with which the Berlin Wall fell on the 9 November 1989 was both surprising and inspiring. No longer would the people of East Germany be held captive under a repressive regime that deprived them, not only of western commodities, but of the most fundamental of human needs, the freedom to thrive. On 18 May 1990, politicians from the East and West signed a treaty creating an economic and social union. This was followed by the Treaty of Unification on 31 August 1990. The dream of one Germany had become a reality. It was now up to the German people to build a unified economy, a task that posed difficult questions most importantly, what to do with the state owned businesses that comprised the former GDR (German Democratic Republic). The former states of the GDR contain some of the highest growth regions in Europe. Despite this, there is social instability and high unemployment. As of October 2003, the unemployment rate in East Germany was 17.3% compared with 8.0% for the West, and 8.1% for the European Union. While there is a necessity to improve the situation for all of Germany, many hurdles remain. In the case of unified Germany, Deutschland einig Vaterland is more than a slogan of unity; it is a statement for economic survival. The aim of this thesis will be to explore the following questions: How did three East German companies the Rotkäppchen sparkling wine company, the Florena cosmetics company, and the Fit detergent company survive and even thrive after reunification? How did the Treuhand Anstalt (THA), or Trust Agency, help these companies, and what affect has this had on the German economy? What were some peripheral reasons for economic survival, including government incentives, global economic expansion during the 1990s, and ostalgia? What were some East German companies that did not survive, and why did they fail when others succeeded? How could these survival strategies be applied to other companies in other nations and what are the lessons for the future? In answering these questions, it will be necessary to explore the history, not only of the three companies, Rotkäppchen, Florena, and Fit, but also of the East German market. Due to the complexity of this topic, however, this thesis will remain focused on three main survival strategies. Even in the seventeenth century, simply speaking of the act was cause for censorship. Here, in the first history of sodomy in these countries, Helmut Puff argues that accusations of sodomy during this era were actually crucial to the success of the Protestant Reformation. Drawing on both literary and historical evidence, Puff shows that speakers of German associated sodomy with Italy and, increasingly, Catholicism. As the Reformation gained momentum, the formerly unspeakable crime of sodomy gained a voice, as Martin Luther and others deployed accusations of sodomy to discredit the upper ranks of the Church and to create a sense of community among Protestant believers. In particular, business location and investment decisions are influenced by the relative tax burdens encountered in different regions. This study presents estimates of the effective average and marginal tax rates on company investment for 143 regions in Europe and the USA. Using the approach pioneered by Michael Devereux and Rachel Griffith, it is shown that companies face a wide variation of effective tax burdens across European regions. The results are explained by analysing the importance of specific tax provisions for the tax burden at the various locations.

Such an approach, particularly within Byzantine and Early Islamic glass production, is a pioneering concept that contextualises individual sites within the wider region. By twinning a critique of archaeometric methods with the latest archaeological research, the contributors present a foundation for glass research, seen through the lens of consumption demands and geographical necessity, that analyses production centres and traditional typological knowledge. In so doing the they bridge an important divide by demonstrating the co-habitability of diverse approaches and disciplines, linking, for example, the production of Campanulate bowls from Gallaecia with the burgeoning international late antique style. Equally, the particular details of those pieces allow us to identify a regional style as well as local production. As such this compilation provides a highly valuable resource for archaeologists, anthropologists, and art historians.
